WHY we got off the Outremer 55
Sadly we're no longer aboard the Outremer 55 Moonshot. Deadlines and destinations do not mix well aboard a cruising boat. We're going to shift gears to hopefully make everyone happy.

Nobody died! You took a calculated risk and when you saw it wasn't working you revised the plan. Don't be too hard on yourself. The rest of us aspiring captains need an attainable goal and role model to look up to. If perfection is the standard we may as well quit now. I appreciate that you two are not perfect! Feel better soon, Megan! 🥰

You didn't make a mistake. You did what all GOOD captains do. You constantly reassessed the situation, evaluated the risks and rewards, and made a decision that was in the best interest of the crew and the boat. That is exactly how it should go, every time. Job well done.

I fully agree. You did make the right call, ocean sailing and being ill didn't match well. And it shows you staying authentic and putting yourself first. Also a big compliment, You are one of the only channels left that didn't turn into a boat manufacturer commercial channel.
This sounds like an apology video and there is ABSOLUTELY no reason for it to be that. You got sick. You are working at getting better. You MUST take care of yourself FIRST or there will be no more O'Kelly videos for us to enjoy. Rest and recover. Take the time you need now so you (and the rest of us) can enjoy where you end up. Looking forward to seeing you on the boat, where ever that may be. In the meantime, take whatever time you need to get better.

@@TheOKellys not a mistake, just an incomplete interpretation of a situation. When more data became available, you reassessed and tacked, very much like you would if you expected wind from one direction only to have it come from another. It will work out.....and for the best....it always does. In the meantime, rest, eat well and take care of yourselves.
I thought about all this on the 1st video you guys posted about this trip. I've done some of this crazy deadline crossings professionally. This kind of trips that imply going no matter what do not match your way of life and of cruising. It goes almost entirely against your believes and way of life. What I love most about your videos is the relaxation and the positivity about sailing and cruising around. You guys are welcome to visit us here in Portugal since you're so close. I'm happy to give you a tour around here. Wish you guys all the best!

I think you know us very well. We would love to take you up on the generous offer. Unfortunately, we have run out of visa time. We will return and accept your hospitality.
Captains of the O'Kelly lives have made the right decision!! Plans change just like the weather, get well soon Megan.
Definitely a respectful decision- as you know from the aviation world, 'get-there-itis' can be a dangerous affliction- good luck to Nick and the rest of the crew!!

Thank you. Yes, plans have killed a lot of pilots. Thankfully altitude not as much a consideration on boats. But plans have certainly killed a lot of sailing dreams....that has been our experience.
I am very proud of you guys for making the right decision on this. I am a retired ER Doctor and I can tell you that with this bug, persistent symptoms like this are harbinger of potential complications if you don't kick back, eat well and stay hydrated, and allow the illness to run it's course. The middle of the ocean is no place be if complications appear! Rest and recuperate and THEN rejoin the boat and enjoy good health and the best of a great voyage. Power up and go when it's time. God bless and I will continue to follow your Grand Tour.

Good decision. I had Covid twice and did not feel truly back to normal for several weeks after testing negative. It was hard enough to feel better at home on dry land. Trying to cope with this illness at sea in rough conditions would be a real mistake. Feel better! Good luck on the voyage, Nick.
Great call. Full support. Health first! (I shared my comment on Instagram, too.) Last year a friend shared this bit of wisdom, "The most dangerous piece of equipment on a boat is a calendar." Outremer's agenda is an understandable business decision, but set dates increase risk. Thank you for sharing this very human, loving, and compassionate decision with us. You continue to be wonderful role models. Megan and Nick, health, peace, and safe passage.
I’ve been so excited for this update. (I’ve also been looking at the weather) I’m so glad that you decided to take time out to look after you. To stop and rest. And wow, what an amazing looking place to rest and regroup. So important to listen to your body. Personally, I think that you have struck a really good balance that works for everyone involved - for both of you, and for the Outremer crew as well. 🙂🐿🌈❤️

Likely, this is all for the best. Recovering from the C sickness takes a while. Bashing around in high seas on low energy, still a bit sick, wet, cold, stressed, sleep deprived... yeah, none of that sounds like anything but a recipe for worse. Good call, guys. I don't know about that, but thank you. We are just trying to do our best, and that's like anyone out there.
One thing about the O'Kelly's is their calm (on video) and excellent decision-making. I could tell in previous episodes that you felt uncomfortable about the timeline of the crossing because you could not prepare adequately for the unexpected. Not your style. Your compromise here is perfect. Megan sacrifices her trip for the good of the team, and Nick learns the boat under the tutelage of an experienced captain. Team O'Kelly will make the most of the situation and come out ahead. Again, excellent decision-making.
Agh! I feel for you guys because I’ve been there. So many mixed emotions! Having this exciting opportunity, what will your viewers think?, your commitment to Outremere, questioning your ability to deliver, how will this effect your relationship with them etc etc. and all the while trying to care for your health. This tough decision shows how much wisdom and experience you both have. The stress and anxiety will hinder your ability to heal and recover...and could lead to long term issues. I’m proud of you and respect you even more that you made this decision! Hey, and don’t worry about us viewers if it’s too much burden. I’d be happy with just crude, unedited updates of the passage if you decide to post any at all. Megan, rest up and recover-Nick, enjoy this exciting experience to sail with some great sailors on an amazing boat!

Ditto, 'raw' footage would be great. Suit the vibe of the trip
Awesome call!! When I saw you were leaving under schedule, I wondered if it would work out (and was hopeful for everybody that it would). But, this just shows that you two have what it takes to give something a try... and if it doesn't work out, you will make the right call and adjust. But, the fact that you guys called it so quickly when things didn't improve was really awesome. You guys spotted that you weren't up to full health and adjusted.
It is better to be safe than sorry and pushing yourself to the max while not being fully recovered can cause other problems. Nick deciding to step down when he knows that he cannot push the boat as much as needed is the sign of a true captain. This trip across the Atlantic will hone Nicks skills and make him an even better captain even though he will be crew.

Wishing you a fast recovery and safe travels for the two of you. Absence makes the heart grow fonder so enjoy your time of solitude - it makes the reunion that much sweeter!
Improvise, adapt and overcome. Glad you are feeling better. Have a great trip.
As ever thank you both for the sharing your thoughts and honesty that you had overreached a bit. Really an utterly sensible set of decisions to look after both of you to allow one to recover from COVID and the other to support the Outremer goal of getting to Miami in time. I’m just happy to see you no matter what-both keep well. And this crazy weather no matter where you/we are, we’re experiencing crazy temps. Here in PNW it’s been in the teens. Se you soon, rest up and take great care!!! 🙏
I was surprised they had you as captain in the first place. Given the schedule and the need to drive the boat hard, (race mode) AND it's still their boat, I would have thought they'd want someone really familiar with the boat and ready and able to race it across the Atlantic. No offense to you guys, but as cruisers, that's not your strength. So glad to hear you are going as crew! I discovered a long time ago the benefits of crewing and not owning. It's a lot cheaper as well, LOL. You are going to learn SO much from those guys as they push the boat hard. It will give you a lot of confidence in your next boat.
Good decision. I hope your recovery is smooth, Megan.

Here’s wishing and hoping that you get better and can rejoin the boat at some point in the crossing. My wife and I can sympathize with you both because we are currently experiencing a similar situation with sickness and how long it has lasted. I got sick with the flu on December 21st, 2022 and just before new years I thought it was almost over, but then it turned into a severe cold with uncontrolled coughing. Then the day after New Years my wife caught the cold, probably from me, and now we both are trying to get over it and it’s hanging in there for all it’s worth. Get well and hope the journey is a success on many levels for both of you.
Much much respect for you both.
Very supportive of your decision and can’t wait to watch the rest of this chapter
Good move Captain! Never a dull moment. Reminds me of a saying my old CFI told me when he let me loose into commercial aviation many decades ago. "Remember, as your career unfolds, if there is any doubt, there is NO doubt."

Considering all the factors between tight schedule, sailing, pushing a new vessel to meet said schedule, and getting over C19 you absolutely made the right decision. You two are awesome cruisers, racing a performance cat across an ocean Hell-bent for leather to meet a schedule is a different kind of "sailing." I know I certainly wouldn't be the person for that either, but there are those out there that live for that kind of excitement and thrilling challenge. I hope the vessel makes it's scheduled meet and I also hope you two get some more time on her when the schedules aren't so tight.

One of the most important, and somewhat unique characteristics of your channel, is that you tell it like it is. Thank you. Sometimes the best laid plans just run amuck. Above all else, you must be comfortable with the situation you are in and the course you are taking. We're just being entertained, so don't worry about disappointing the viewers. Hopefully, Megan's health will come right, Nick's Atlantic crossing on the Outremer 55 will be another exciting adventure, and we will get our O'Kellys fix when the cake is baked. Travel safe, and Kia Kaha always.
You are making the right decision. Health first!
Under the prevailing conditions you appear to have made the smart choice. That is the sign of a good captain.
Hi, I don't usually comment, but love your channel. Can't help thinking that the company would have made a much better, more positive decision to just give you the boat to do with as you wished, meanwhile making lovely, sunny and positive vlogs about it. Win/win situation, lol. You definitely made a sound decision there. I mean, (I am probably showing my ignorance here), but was wondering just how many of the intended customer base, would buy a brand new (expensive) catamaran, then immediately decide to sail across the Atlantic, in the middle of winter. With a deadline. And Covid. Anyone????
You guys did great and made the best decision even if it wasn't the easiest but also admittimg to a mistake is even harder. You all should be proud of yourselves honestly. 😊
It sounds like you made the right call. When time, weather, and health are all saying the same thing, it’s probably good to listen. Megan, I hope you’re back to 100% soon. Nick, don’t fall off the boat 😉
Hope you are feeling better now!!!
