Well done video. AND. You had some fun too. When I wanted to sell my boat, I went to a brokerage and said that I wanted to sell my boat THIS SUMMER. I didn’t want to keep it another year. The broker said that he should be able to sell it “ within a year”. He didn’t listen so went to another broker and went through the same scenario. This guy listened ( what a concept). We had is sold in a month! Done. I was willing to bring the price down to a reasonable amount and it sold right away. I didn’t fight, grind, bicker, I sold the boat for a good price to a young coulpe that will really enjoy it. Win, win!

That’s generally how we do things as well. Decide to sell and sell at whatever the market will bring. I will never understand why someone would “hold out” for “their” price unless they aren’t earnestly trying to sell.
For several years I looked at Catamarans and thought for sure that is what I would buy (Year 2020-2022). After realizing the premium on cats, I went back and reconsidered a mono. I put a short list of things I was looking for and one was "waterline" but still able to sail short handed and even solo. Last year I bought a 2007 Jeanneau 54DS that was in the NE and in great shape for roughly 250K. After a lot of projects and about 100K worth of upgrades I have a boat that will take me anywhere I want to go, is as roomy as a cat, I can single hand thanks to technology like autohelm and electric winches. Most of all she looks and sails great. As for speed 9-10kts motoring and sailing which is as good as many of performance cats and far better than the floating condos. Just another option to consider!

There is a lot that can break on that type of boat (and it will!) ....'everywhere' is of course relative since you cannot go too far north or south on a plastic boat and once you are in SE Asia; good luck finding (or even ordering parts) or getting something actually fixed on a boat chock full of tech

I prefer these types of videos. KZread is full of sailing channels, but what you're doing now, market research, talking about offers, etc, very few are doing that which makes it soooo much more valuable. I still watch the occasional normal sailing video, but yours are probably the only ones I'm excited to watch, as I'm casually in the market as well.

Sorry to hear you keep getting sick. I know my sailing plans were derailed going into retirement. Cindy, my wife of 26 years, had one more year left before retiring. I hope you didn't do what my wife did back in 2020. She was the only one in my family to line up for it and a second round, not even my 70s parents did it. Afterwards my wife kept having one illness after another, always getting sick from something. I now have found myself as a widow at 55. Do everything you can do, naturally, to stay healthy. Even though you haven't found you vessel, I'm enjoying your world traveling.

@Vallecaucanisimo just to make clear, from my part it was an honest question, not criticism. For example, would you rather go for a boat that's $50K cheaper but located on the other side of the world or go for a closer one that's more expensive? Or maybe a smaller but new(er) one? Once one budgets the cost of flying, accommodation, and the opportunity cost of time I'm not sure what the answer is. What I do know is that if something sounds too good to be true (e.g. way below comparative listings), it usually is.

We soooo want you guys to get a boat!! Miss those old videos and also want you two to be happy on the water again
Your analysis is interesting, another point in your favour is the number of youtube sailors that are simply building new vessels. The problem with boats is that they are like cottages, valuable to the people who own them but far less so to the people looking to buy one. Brokers don't help the process and have little inclination to do anything. They get paid if the boat sells but only if they were retained by the client. High-priced boats in your listing show you have inventory. the best brokers are those who have high turnover. Good luck
You guys have as much good luck fishing as you are finding a new boat. Your fans are rooting for you, though, and I'm sure you will find your new home in due time. God bless.
Great to see a video from you guys, its been awhile. Personally I have never been in the market for a cat, I'm strictly mono. The monohull market has much more to offer and at much better prices. Just something to consider.
It's just good to see you two. Whatever you do you make it interesting. Stay well!
I love the simply life of freedom you have. I especially like your simple honesty. So many boater videos are contrived. Fake. Funny thing about lying like that. It leads to insanity. 100% agree with your take on the market. Cats are listing for higher prices now than they were 5 years ago. Not to mention some of them are 20+ years old and asking more than they were new. Sellers are fooling themselves. Anyway, my investment accounts have quadrupled in the meantime. Maybe prices will be back to reality in another 2.5 years.

It would be one thing if these boats were selling, but they aren’t. I have to correct myself…some are still selling at “unusual” prices, but many are just sitting. I think that there just aren’t as many buyers out there now…or at at least as many “I want that boat, no matter the cost” buyers out there. Will be interesting to see how this shakes out.

@@TheOKellys I started looking in 2022, while in Antarctica, and immediately stumbled onto the O'Kellys...I can't help but to think that some of the market inflation is due to the effective and expanding success of the O'Kellys. I have always found that the best boats to sail on are other people's boats. I have spent months living and sailing in other people's boats, I just bring the food and the booze and help with the chores. It's a whole lot less expensive and much less stress than owning. I have had even more success flying other people's airplanes. I have all my ratings and stay current. I've probably saved $1 million over the past 10 years.

Excellent video, so correct. we are in the same situation. Sold our smaller cat to upgrade (2 years ago) and the prices are so over heated. I have been keeping a very close eye on the market (here in Australia) and cats are more or less 100k over priced. Be silly enough to pay those prices and you will take the financial hit on the other end. My wife and I are now "Out' of the market. No longer even looking and there is a real freedom to that.

Honestly sounds like a good move. I've been hunting for a sailboat and, despite a glut of inventory, the prices are remaining high. I think a lot of people got into the sailing life during the pandemic and now that it's (largely) over, they're getting back to real life...but they want a return on their investment as if it were an amortizing house and not a big, depreciating vehicle. Looking forward to hearing about your journey from here on, boat or no
I decided to build a boat, as I wanted to keep my properties so I'm not in the $1M range but definitely in the $300K range, I made this decision as I want a passive income while I sail away

Funny how some people look at life. Obviously with all the thumbs up, I suppose you all share this sentiment. But let me enlighten you. Your assumption is that any time and money not spent on a boat is a waste. What an impoverished viewpoint. First of all, we have learned more about different boats, builders, designs and designers than we could EVER have had we purchased another boat right way. Secondly, we have spent incredible time with friends we’d NEVER have met other than through looking for our next boat. Same goes with all sorts of non-boating-related experiences. Last, as the boat market is shifting exactly as we expected, while the stock market has been better than we could have hoped for, financially we are way way way ahead of where we’d be if we’d bought a boat close to the top of the market 18-24 months ago. So…friends, life works out the way it does…being grateful for what does happen and NOT ungrateful or even regretful is the only way to be. Your thesis that we have somehow wasted time or money or both…doesn’t hold for us.

@TheOKellys
9 күн бұрын
Well, without picking on anyone in particular, I feel pretty darn rotten for some of these folks dealing with what looks like poor quality right out of the factory. It is doubly tough if you are going through this in public as we all are to certain extent with all this social media. Doubly hard because you don’t want to give your huge investment (boat) a bad reputation and you also (probably) want to keep a good relationship with the people you hope will fix the boat. But yeh…man o man I think I’d be lawyering up if I were a couple of these owners…
As I sit here drinking my coffee while watching your video, I’m pondering what would be the perfect boat for you both. I hear you like performance cruiser catamarans. How trendy. And spendy. But is that your perfect boat? Wouldn’t you be that much happier if you lived on a barge with its very own taco truck? Add an airstream and a few tonnes of sand and you wouldn’t even need to get in your dinghy to go to the beach. You like the perks of a 24’ beam? Imagine what a 100’ beam would be like. I bet that combo would be more than 50% cheaper. And when hurricane season comes, you just hook your taco truck up to the airstream and your happy place goes wherever you do.
Totally agree and I feel these numbers are good for other boats as well. I’m in the Trawler market and waiting… Your book brought me to channel and I’m just a boater enjoy the content.

A 58 ft Catamaran is a HUGE boat. My boat is a 34 x 14 foot cat and it is still a condo. Two actual double berths and queen size master. I am 6' 5" tall and the entire boat fits me well. Compared to a similar length monohull, well, there is no comparison. Have owned both. Love the cat.
Absolute fun. Love that the Okelly’s humor comes shining out in this video. The reference to the famous movies are telling- millennials haven’t been born yet when the Matrix & Mission Impossible films came out in theaters…. OMG. ..
