I had type II diabetes starting in my early 20s. No doctor ever gave me any meaningful advice other than to cycle me between prescriptions. This journalist's book gave me the foundation I needed to investigate for myself the causes of my disease that nobody ever seemed willing to clue me in on. My diabetes is now in remission and I've had normal blood glucose for 5 years *without medication*. I have a life to look forward to because of this journalist. No doctor gave me that.

I was vegan for 20+ years and my cholesterol, blood pressure, blood sugar A1c - were all borderline high. I was nearly into metabolic syndrome and I ate clean, low fat, and hit the gym daily. I couldn't lose weight w/o starving. After 6 months studying the "fad" keto diet I tried it. All my bloodwork is excellent now, I'm buff and almost ripped. Good luck to all on this journey!

billytheweasel I did the same thing. Went from losing 0.5 pd/month on a conventional low-fat diet counting every calorie and exercise session with constant cravings and hunger, then switched to high fat low carb (HFLC). I lost 50+ pds in 1 year effortlessly on HFLC. It has changed my life. Because of my experience, this is not an academic issue for me. The shame of the conventional calories in/calories out (CICO) viewpoint is that so many people are suffering. Folks are losing limbs, eyesight, cognitive function, mobility and dignity due to the misdirection of the CICO advice that has failed us for decades. It's criminal. I wonder if a class action suit, like what happened to the tobacco industry, is in order to force the nutritional hierarchy to reevaluate their position on insulin induced obesity.

When I was a child we moved into an apartment below a woman who had a new born baby. She followed the teachings of a scientist from the 1920 s who believed that baby's should be like machines and needed exactly 8 oz every 4 hours. We listened to that poor baby cry for 2 out of every 4 hours. My mother tried to explain that babies were not machines. Thankfully this barbaric practice is gone. Hopefully the barbaric practice of reciting calories in and calories out will someday go away. It has been proven wrong over and over again, in many studies. I once asked a women who looked like a walking skeleton why she did not eat more fat to gain weight. She had tried it for a week at the suggestion of her doctor. She lost 10 pounds. The only way she could stop weight lose was to eat lots of carbs. I stayed fat on 1200 low fat, high fiber, whole grain diet. Now I eat high fat, no grain diet and have not only lost weight, but am healthier at almost 60 than I was at 30.

Not much was mentioned by either side, that when a diet includes adequate protein, muscle tissue is increased, which increases passive energy expenditure. This is why the low carb diets have the much argued metabolic advantage that is not present in low fat diets. Those diets naturally have less protein since sources of fat and protein are often the same.

I went low carb or "dirty Keto" about 8 months ago. I had experienced three heart attacks, two spinal fusions, four knee surgeries, and was prediabetic. I couldn't walk 100 yards without resting, was underwater in nine blood markers, and weighed 300lbs. I was dying plain and simple. I had no energy and could barely function. In eight months every single one of these issues have been reversed. My blood markers are normal, no longer prediabetic, no longer taking omeprazole, all meds cut in half, no joint pain, and I can walk all day. I have more energy than any time in the last 20 years. The best part, I'm down 60 pounds and I have new clothes. Keto is the realization that carbs/sugars were killing me. This lifestyle works and it has completely changed my life.

I personally take a middle of the road approach when it comes to Taubes' perspective and Dr. Gardner's perspective. I, unlike Taubes, believe that calories do matter, but I believe that achieving lower caloric intake is far easier on a low carb diet than on a high carb/low fat one, because the extra protein and fat in low carb diets satiates the person with fewer calories than carbohydrates, and since carbohydrates spike blood sugar, they can induce hunger.

Gary's arguments are all extremely well researched. Even if his books were advertisement for factory meat (which they are not), this does not matter at all. It's like having a mathematician say "1 plus 1 is 2!" and your counterargument is "this is just an advertisement for math books and sponsored by Mathematcia." It's not a counterargument at all.

If carbs themselves were the problem, young marathon runners would be huge. They're usually not. I believe that insulin resistance (which takes place on a sliding scale) is more easily acquired than widely believed. Once a degree of it is acquired (via too many blood glucose spikes), insulin production (thus, carb consumption, esp refined carbs) must be limited until sensitivity is restored. So, don't carb diet to lose weight. Do it, for a time, to regain insulin receptor sensitivity.

I find it simpler to copy the meal plans of traditional diets of people who exercise that I admire such as the islander diets like Okinawa diet or Papua New Guinea diet and if you try to match it with the science we know so far, we know such traditional diets have thousands of micronutrients from the usual plant food, plus seaweed, mushrooms, and fermented plant food. Using real food carb staples, people can thrive on very little protein and very little fat. I also exercise after every meal.

The REAL question that no one is asking, and is still dangerously unanswered to this day, is: What suddenly mesmerized the American population (then gone global) into eating processed foods, after the extremely health conscious 60s and 70s? Just as that technique got everyone to get obese, it is also manipulating the dumbed down population to do a whole lot more.

This is a really good discussion. I would just say that Gardner seems to be missing the point with his comparative diets; I don't think anyone is disputing the fact that extreme under or over eating affects body weight. What we are taking about is a)how dietary composition affects body composition, isocalorically; and also whether a diet's main fuel source (fat or carbs) predisposes people generally, or certain individuals, to sustain saturated adipose tissue.

Some people don't seem to be clear on what insulin does. Insulin's main job is not to signal the body to store blood glucose as fat, it is to signal the cell (at the insulin receptor) to open up and allow the glucose to enter. Only when blood glucose becomes too high (when the cells are full, or when insulin resistance at the receptor causes the cell not to receive the 'open' signal) does insulin cause the excess to be stored as fat.

It's not that simple. The hormone insulin drives fat storage, and insulin levels increase with carbohydrate consumption. The higher the insulin, the more calories are locked away in the fat cells, which means your lean cells get no nourishment, except for cannibalizing your body's own muscle tissue. In that case, your metabolism WILL slow down. I never said it was instantaneous. Different people also have different levels of tolerance. It is immensely more complicated than you think it is.

You forget that you must also take into account the amount of carbs being converted, and the glycemic load. Putting load on the liver and creating more fat stores. Also continually spiking insulin through the roof, which is only done by carbs, you can cause insulin resistance, and leptin resistance once you become fat from the insulin resistance, making it easier to store fat, lowering metabolism, and increasing appetite do to the leptin not sensing sufficient fat stores.

I had a personal experience at the age of 26 We relocated to some corporate housing in San Diego where he had a new job but I just quit my old job to go with him and I wasn't yet working, and we were walking around our new neighborhood. In my travels I learned there was an arcade near our house where there was some sort of contest to win a prize There was a big rectangular fish tank full of M & M's candy and the person who guesses most closely the number of candies in the tank wins the candy. So, my husband spent forty minutes and carefully counted the individual candies in the vertical row, the horizontal, the depth and he calculated it all out to make an educated scientific guess .... and he won So there was suddenly all this candy in our walk in closet and I filled a bowl and placed it on a coffee table in front of a television set. After he left for work, I settled in to watch television, and began snacking on the candies. This went on for three weeks, a few candies here and there, nibbling throughout the day, and I gained so much weight so fast, I couldn't button my pants! I learned that the ideal weight gain food is sugar combined with calorie rich cocoa butter. Perhaps I had been previously misled to think the worst food anyone could eat might be bacon grease, but I came to know it is the combination of pairing sugar and fat calories. I have heard of people slowly and steadily losing weight on a low fat low calorie diet even when they ate sugary yogurt. I have heard of people losing significant weight on a low carb diet. I have even heard of people lightly trimming their weight just by cutting out sodas and desserts. I have heard of people losing weight of phentermine fenfluramine. I have heard of people water fasting and not really losing all that much weight However, I am convinced the lack of insulin production definitely has something to do with the metabolic process of weight loss, and anabolic steroid abusers have discovered this- they take non prescribed injectable insulin to bulk up in the gym.

+Lorena Smith 48g (1.7 oz) of M&M's has 240 calories (240 calories per 48g = 5 cal/g). 38% of the calores are from fat. Only 2g are protein. which is about 8 calories. It has only 1g of fiber per 240 cal (0.004g fiber per cal). This type of food lacks protein, fiber, and water and it is calorie-dense. It's also highly palatable, inexpensive, easy to access and eat, and requires little energy to digest. Compare this with fresh apples which are 65 calories per 125g (0.5 cal/g) which is one-tenth the calorie density of M&M's. Apples have 3g fiber per 65 cal (0.046 g fiber per cal) which is ten times that of M&M's Instead of blaming it all on carbohydrate and insulin, why not acknowledge the facts above. Many won't acknowledge this and instead want to direct people in an unwarranted manner to a diet high in animal fat and very low in carbohydrate based on the attributes of a product like M&M's.

+Jay Tarro M&Ms are 57% carbs. That little tidbit was missing from your excellent analysis. M&Ms Milk Chocolate is 57% carbs, 38% fat and 5% protein. This supports Lorena Smith's contention that it is high fat + high carbs that makes us fat. I agree with her. I've done HCLF (with less than 10% fat) as well as HFLC (with net carb grams less than 50) and they both work. I am also insulin resistant which makes this n=1 experiment interesting as the studies say only HFLC works for people who are insulin resistant. I think that if the dieter can push fat below 10%, HCLF works. But most people won't find that easy!

Spiking blood glucose is like wearing ill-fitting shoes. Eventually, you'll get a blister (insulin resistance causing blood glucose to build up, causing insulin prod to increase, all causing gluc to be stored as fat). The only way to heal the blister (insulin resistance) is to stop wearing those shoes for a while. The only way not to get another blister is to stop wearing those shoes altogether. Cut carbs (esp refined) until sensitivity returns... thereafter in measured doses. Be a CARBuretor.

And I don't think he is dismissing the central role that insulin plays in weight gain for many people, but I think he says that more testing needs to be done before we jump to one conclusion as the culprit for the obesity epidemic, or we will be committing the same mistake as those who peddled the low fat dogma for so long.

It is sort of like how people still choose to smoke cigarettes, but they are aware of the increased risk of chronic disease they have because of smoking. They decide that the pleasure from smoking is worth the risk. One should also decide whether eating high cholesterol, no fiber foods are worth the risks.

Eating what your recent ancestors ate (not your paleo ancestors' diet which can be dangerous to our weaker system that can't digest raw meats) makes sense because it's not overloaded with processed crap which can be the reason why so many people are so sick... they may not be overweight or obese but are still ill with something else that isn't weight related. Such things like food allergies, cancers, low immunity, asthma, etc. :/ Anyways thank you for posting this video up. Peace be to all.

I can't believe that scientists like Christopher Gardner just "don't get it" when it comes to insulin and fat accumulation. He still believes in calories in/ calories out and doesn't seem to understand the importance of carbohydrates as fattening due to their effects on insulin.

This talk articulates everything that is wrong with nutrition. People get drawn into fads and titles more than actual change. Low fat, low carb, atkins, paleo, etc. What is clear is that there are indeed many camps, each touting their set of evidence to be the more truer one. The science has been changing for over a hundred years, and god knows how long it will continue to do so. But fortunately, there are some points that are accepted by the overwhelming majority of academicians. Westernisation of diets has had a negative impact on health. We need to increase intake of fruits and vegetables. We need to cut down on refined and processed carbs; and drastically reduce refined sugar intake. We need to eat fresh food far more often, instead of rely on boxed items that can hardly be called food. We need to get back to kitchen and regain the bond that we have long lost with food.

What exactly do you believe that plant positive is incorrect or lying about? Could you be specific instead of using blanket terms like "biased"? Did he over look something in his research? I would like to know about what you found that may help his research efforts and I'm sure he would too.

I think a huge majority of people ought to stop relying so much on guru dieticians or guru doctors like these. People need to research their own diet plan. I stuck with what my great great grandparents ate & saw huge results. My blood pressure, heart pulse, fat %, headaches lowered dramatically. I sleep better too. I stuck with a low fat, low carb, low sugar, low processed diet. My pirate ancestors ate mainly brown, dark bread, seaweed, crabs & shrimps so makes sense I ate what they ate.

I assume Gardner is a medical doctor which is odd because he appears to shy away/downplay the fundamental centrality of the biochemical facts relating to insulin and fat accumulation which Taubes presents as central to his thesis. I think Taubes's point about the possibility that for anyone with a metabolic disorder, even a small amount of carb, no matter whether simple or complex, can be too much for them to tolerate, is logical. Gardner's thinking is what keeps obese people obese.

I'm 60 years old........6'2'' at 185lbs with a 29 inch waist...........and 4% body fat...the rest is lean muscle from only 90 mins a week of weight training.........I'm in better shape than any 20 something in the gym. It is from eating for health.......not for weight.

Whether or not I'm a vegan is not relevant. Almost all smokers today are aware that their smoking is increasing their risk of chronic diseases, but they have weighed their options and decided that the pleasure from smoking is worth the risks it poses. Similarly, I could still understand that I'm increasing my risk for heart disease by eating bacon and eggs if I decide that that breakfast creates pleasure that's worth the risk. Initially, smokers resisted the science, but now they accept it.

You do realize the inuit were healthy until they started eating the western diet right? Did you actually google them yourself and read up on them? You might also want to look at the aboriginal studies and what happened after they became 'civilized' and what also happened when they placed a group of them back into the wild and studied them.

I would like to know about them and I'm sure plant positive would too. You can leave messages in his comment section for him and his viewers to see or you could send him a personal message. He actually appreciates helpful sources for his research and if he notices a flaw in the source he might point it out in his next set of videos.

Christopher Gardner is on target and gets it yet Gary Taubes on the other hand is very confused. Carbohydrates can't be grouped into one, they must be split into simple carbs and complex carbs. Whole foods (never had the cell split) like potatoes, beans, corn and rice are ok and should be eaten in abundance without toppings or butter which is fatty acid. Calorie Density relating to fat calories is the other subject that needs to be considered. One slice of butter has as much fat as 5 potatoes. Those 5 potatoes will completely fill a person while it would take 3 sticks of butter. Beef steak is full of fatty acids. Vegetables are bulky and fill the stomach. Recap: Good carbs vs bad carbs and calorie density relating to fatty acid amount.

I could not agree more. I have tried to talk to a few vegans and out of those few, they come off as zealots, and are extremely dogmatic. THIS does not mean that all or even most vegans are this way. A few vegans on KZread are just so dogmatic and you can't have a civil conversation with them, gyrate4 is a prime example. He messages me, I answer him back and we engage in conversation and he becomes combative. Dude, let's just talk and be civil. No need to be tough on the internet.
