Vito Russo (July 11, 1946 -- November 7, 1990) was an American LGBT activist, film historian and author who is best remembered as the author of the book The Celluloid Closet (1981, revised edition 1987). He was a co-founder of the Gay Activist Alliance, the Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation, and ACT UP.
A documentary film on the life of Vito Russo, "Vito," premiered at the 2011 New York Film Festival and on HBO June 23, 2012.

    What a brave hero, icon, and forerunner of the Gay Rights movement. His Spirit lives on every time someone comes out off the closet! Thank you Vito, for paving the way so we can take up space today. You are not forgotten!

    what a great speech. Since the advent of HAART AIDS Activism has certainly changed. Maybe we need more people like Vito Russo. HIV/AIDS is still here in 2013 RIP VITO RUSSO
