"How to Survive a Plague": As ACT UP Turns 25, New Film on History of AIDS Activism. 2 of 2
democracynow.org - This weekend marks the 25th anniversary of ACT UP -the AIDS Coalition to Unleash Power - an international direct action advocacy group formed by a coalition of activists outraged over the government's mismanagement of the AIDS crisis. We speak with ACT UP founding member Peter Staley, one of the longest AIDS survivors in the country; and David France, director of the new documentary "How to Survive a Plague," which tells remarkable history of AIDS activism and how it changed the country. "I'm alive because of this activism," Staley says of the triple drug therapy he was able to take. "This was a major victory this movie tells about getting these therapies. But that was only the beginning of the battle. Now we have these treatments that can keep people alive, and there are still two to three million dying every year. There are more dying now than when we actually got the therapies to save people. So it's a huge failure of leadership internationally and it shows a failure of our own healthcare system."

I SO 2nd That!
Peter Staley I was so relieved that you were one of the ones that survived. You thought for sure you were a goner. You are an incredible human being with a big heart. Great documentary. Goes to show you how powerful people can be. Peter Staley you had a guardian angel sitting on your shoulder the day you were riding your bike to work and rode right into the ACT protest.

Can't imagine the type of survivor's guilt he must feel... So sad
Frankly, it's amazing that the protests weren't more violent. People with no hope can get pretty desperate and do crazy things. It's a testament to the humanity and grace of the ACT-UP group.

1976 gayby here. People were more into being disruptive back then. You’ll also notice opponents with guns (MAGAs) never bothered them, nor did they really bother those of us in the mid-90s during our continued fight. The generation that disrupted pharma and gov’t during the pre-96 AIDS years saved those of us born not long after them. I was able to enjoy my 20s because of them. I continued the disruption during the fight for marriage equality, gays in the military, etc. Violence per se was never the answer and we understood that.

@@UnionAdvocate I am a 60 year old gay man. I came out at 20 in 1984 at the start of the plague. Honestly, I don't think there were any real MAGA types at the events because they all figured we were going to die anyway. Even the cops were afraid to touch us without gloves.
ACTUP was started by Larry Kramer when he spoke at the LGBTQ Center. He addressed those in attendance and asked "Do we want to start a new organization devoted to political action?" The answer was "a resounding yes." Approximately 300 people met two days later to form ACT UP
Yeah this Capitalist system has to go! Thank you Democracy Now for this, I enjoyed it
Dang. So intense.
You can isolate like a rat in a hole, or you can be human and work together to make things better for everyone.
I didn't know about the political funerals - very moving. Love the work of ACT UP - one problem I have about David France's statement about 'it became a national...then international movement' suggesting it all started in the States. No, there were already movements worldwide. That's a problem of US gay history documentaries - they tend to suggest it all started there, which isn't the case.
It is an amazing movie.
Heroes all of them ❤️
I'd love to see more histories of the activism worldwide, but the money for making such documentaries is in America, so that's the history that gets told.
Isolation is the best way to avoid a plague.

WOW SAYS BUSH KILLED HIM REALLY HE KILLED HIMSELF.

If the Reagan or Bush administration hadn’t ignored the epidemic for so long instead of staying silent for political reasons the treatment that eventually saved some people could have been found much sooner and a lot of the dead would not have had to die. If ACT Up and other organizations hadn’t pushed so hard millions would have died in the US.
Mark Harrington, Peter Staley and Jim Eigo; 3 Main Characters in the popular AIDS Activist documentary: How to survive a Plague, all claimed to have a killer virus called HIV, and/or AIDS. 30 years later these men are still alive shouting pandemic? Does anyone else see something very wrong with this picture?
