- About Dr. Mary Claire Haver and The Galveston Diet -
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a passionate women’s health advocate who believes women in midlife deserve to live their best life. She cuts through fat-shaming and fads, so women are empowered with the science behind anti-inflammation nutrition.
Dr. Mary Claire Haver is a wife, mom, physician, and entrepreneur who has devoted her adult life to women’s health. As a Board-Certified OBGYN in the Houston area, Dr. Haver has delivered thousands of babies, completed thousands of well-woman exams, counseled patients, taught residents, and did everything an academic professor and OBGYN could do.
As her patient population aged, Dr. Haver was overwhelmed with the number of complaints and concerns her patients had with weight gain while going through menopause. For years, she told her patients to eat less and exercise more. It wasn't until she experienced the changes of menopause and mid-life weight gain that she realized this advice doesn't work and ultimately led to her creating and developing a new program, The Galveston Diet.
The Galveston Diet is the first and only nutrition program created by a Female OBGYN, designed for women in menopause. The Galveston Diet helps women reach their health and wellness goals through an anti-inflammatory approach to nutrition. Dr. Haver believes in food's power to combat inflammation and highly recommends the unlimited benefits of intermittent fasting. As part of her ongoing research, she became certified in Culinary Medicine in 2019, specializing in medical nutrition.

As a good friend of mine who doesn't like to exercise told me or exercising today not for today but for the us 10 years from now. She was so correct. What you can get away with at 35 or 40, you can't get away with at 50 and 55. We need muscle mass, flexibility and balance.
I'm 84 and I guarantee that if you want to be healthy and independent, you have to earn it by working out. Understand that if you want it, you have to earn it.
As a menopausal woman, I'm not exercising to get the flat belly, the huge bubble butt, the toned arms so I can waltz all over town wearing my exercise gear. I'm exercising so that in 25 years I can still walk, ride my bike, carry my groceries, get myself up and down off the toilet, hike up and down the hundreds of steps in Santorini again. I'm exercising so I can run and bike away from unexpected danger, so I can maintain my balance and not tip over and break my hip like my mum did, and so that I can run after and lift up the grandchildren who get dropped off so their parents can go to the gym and exercise...😉
Everything you said hit home . I’m 51 and been going to gym for over 2 yrs to build muscle when I started I was over 250 lbs now yes I’m under 200 lbs , I think I’m guilty of trying to look like these trainers and instagram 20yr women which is impossible . I need to really refocus on my gym routine . One thing I also do is walk over 12,000 steps a day as a server so that’s a plus
Thank you for this clear explanation-I am 61 now and just starting to lose muscle strength after 2 years without exercising regularly (due to high stress situation). Will get straight back onto it! New subbie waving from Australia … 🙋🏼♀️🇦🇺
I'm 57 and have been bodybuilding since the day I turned 40, I'm so glad I started then. The benefits of lifting HEAVY weight has kept me strong and lean. I am just entering menopause now and although it is challenging, I continue to push myself to get to the gym 4 or 5 days a week to minimize the affects of aging & symptoms of menopause. I continue to gain strength and muscle. Muscle knows no age. You'd never know I was 57. Most think I'm in my late 30's and I'm not kidding. Exercise (heavy lifting + cardio) diet (anti-inflammatory), sleep and low stress will keep you young.

It will NOT keep YOU ...YOUNG. Just very HEALTHY, STRONG and MOBILE. Your FACE, HANDS will ALWAYS tell the truth. Just age gracefully.
Preachhhhhh! I think a lot of these young people don't know many women who have goals outside of attracting the male gaze..

Shame on you for thinking that it's only about "the male gaze". I kind to look good for ME! You're a misandrist and that's just as bad as your false claims of misogyny! You and this broad are both man-haters and it's disgusting!
So true 👏👏👏👏👏👏
I’m an author and a certified fitness educator and in the past I was also frustrated at the fitness industry for focusing JUST on aesthetics and not function or prevention BUT I found out why. The general public demands are for aesthetics because they don’t understand the underlying function of our wonderful muscles bones hormones and organs. More anatomy and physiology education is required but apparently it’s not exciting fun or sexy lol. I’d love to collaborate with you. I wonder how many menopausal and post menopausal woman know that we lose 1 pound of muscle mass per year on average and that muscles contain mitochondria which is where energy production occurs so less muscle, less calories burned. Or that stress makes it close to impossible to get rid of belly fat due to levels of cortisol. I love what you do and follow you regularly. Thanks!

Not enough research or at least focus was done on menopausal bodies and how our needs...both dietary and with exercise change dramatically over time because of the loss of hormones, bone and muscle mass. I've had to do all my own research but have found that luckily, it's becoming much more accessible and prevalent online than it used to be. I'm glad there are those of you who put the focus on the menopausal body and what we need to do to gain strength and fitness. Thank you!

I agree entirely with these insights & facts. I DO know your listed facts…(being an advanced degree Nurse). I’m 73, & exercise just about every day in one format or another….and am a very dedicated gardener. I look for something to lift/move, shovel and or rake daily for the garden or property & for MY body. Practical homestead body work😂. I’m getting stronger & stronger, the garden& Acres? …becoming spectacular‼️👌

@@katiemoyer8679 Nothing more satisfying than putting your hands deep into the soil and creating beautiful landscapes! My mother was an avid gardener and I am trying but unfortunately have not seemed to have inherited that green thumb of hers. Luckily it passed on somewhere though. My eldest son is a botanist and my eldest daughter can take any clipping of a plant and make it flourish! Glad to hear you're moving, creating and keeping active. Best thing for our bodies!🏵🌹🌱🌻💦🦋🌿🌼☀

I just started nursing school and had to take a&p (at 51 & 3 degrees later a mid life crisis??😂). It was my fav class. I wish it was a required class in college as you learn so much about our amazing bodies. If you understand how important our hormones are and why weightlifting is good, it makes it easier to convince yourself why you should make it priority. I lift weights 3-5 times weekly and it makes me feel alive. It is never too late.
Exactly. We need to be able to move. I was sedentary and overweight and didn't start losing weight and exercising until I started to go through menopause at age 53. Not only was I an emotional mess (worse than any PMS...my poor late boyfriend) I was feeling those effects. My joints hurt. My back hurt. I couldn't get up off the floor without help. I couldn't climb a flight of stairs...slowly...without being winded. I have a disabled adult son with Autism whom I'll be caring for for the rest of my life. My life partner of 14 years passed away very suddenly within a month of his liver cancer diagnosis so I'm doing this alone. My son is an Epileptic and if he has a seizure and falls, I need to be able to manage him physically. I have more to think about than aesthetics. It is nice to look good, but my goal is strength and health. Like with the previous poster, I'm now 57 (although went through menopause earlier than she did by a few years) and have been lifting, toning, doing HIIT exercises and light cardio (too much cardio stresses the body causing Cortisol production...bad news for fat retention) for a little over 3 years. I lost 85 lbs, gained muscle and I'm now in the best shape of my life. It continues to be a struggle, but no one promised it would be easy. I'm determined to stay fit.
I am now exercising every day specifically balance work. At 54 I am starting to lose balance more easily. I work in health and have seen how often older ladies fall which massively increases the chance of fractures then further loss of mobility chest infections you name it. Stay safe ladies and strengthen. I know I can’t leave it any longer to strengthen up.
I was checking out which gyms to join. The gym manager kept talking about the weight loss programs. I explained I was more concerned with strength, endurance, and balance. My goals are to be able to do gardening, play with grandchildren, and move about without fear of falling.
You are correct as almost 70 you must keep moving and working and exercising. You need to be able to still enjoy life to cook clean and do things you like. It's not how you look it's how you feel. Have degrees in Health Ed.
I got a trainer that is the same age as me. Best trainer Ive ever had.
I absolutely share that goal with you Dr. Haver. Im a TAHBSO survivor and im struggling losing weight but more focused on being healthy less of the strenuous exercises. Thank you. Have a great day
AMEN!!!!!! Sista you hit the target right on center point on all your points. Don't want to be 25 again, I was stupid back then. Aging Well is the goal. Thank you for dropping this wisdom nugget for these young trainers and the whole fitness industry. They mainly focus on the vanity of looking "sexy," which honestly relative to each individual.
I love your message and your tone! Never patronizing, I'm happy to have found your advice! Almost 50, loving strength training and having my butt kicked by my amazing coach! Thank you!
Omg I love you for saying EXACTLY what I keep trying to tell people🎉. I want to age gracefully, travel and crawl and run around with my grandchildren. Besides I absolutely love taking long walks and doing yoga it is so therapeutic. 🙌🏾💕
Seriously love this video and couldn't agree more! This is the whole reason I took my own leap of faith and created my own business, Maxgevity Fitness. Aesthetics are nice and all, but FUNCTION and achieving your maximum longevity (Maxgevity) with good health and functionality so that we can truly enjoy our "golden" years is my true goal, and I love seeing and hearing more men and women who get it. If we don't give time for our health when we're young, our health won't give us more time when we're old.
As a recently retired female fitness trainer of 20 plus years I agree. These young trainers have no idea what different stages people are in and what their needs really are. It isn’t about a 6 pack especially at 50 plus. I really. enjoy your videos and thank you!😊
Love your speech! Thank you.
I agree. I'm 76 and prior to covid lockdown in Australia I was doing 5 strength, resistance, stretch and cardio exercise classes a week. I was super fit, moreso than younger ones and I loved it. I lost a lot of my fitness although walked and participated in online daily classes. Now I', back to class and it's taken hardly any time to catch up, but not quite to where I was. Muscles remember, they just need waking. I need to be fit for myself and for my husband of 55 yrs who has chronic arthritis. He swims 3 times weekly and walks with a wheelie walker but his body is beginning to be crippling. I don't have this at all and I intend to keep exercising not for aesthetics but for longevity and for my husband.
I exercise to feel my best, so that can continue on life's adventures!!
Thank you for your wisdom & appropriate perspective. No one will be consistent just to look 25. However feeling great, & living a great life is worth the effort ❣️
AMEN!! Survival of the everyday living and shove into a care home where I'll be turn once a day. I want the same, but AT 90
Thank you!! And I'm kinda over all of these young men knowing what I should be doing.
I actually agree with this video. Most of them not so much
Very well said. I look at myself and think where are you? I’m looking for my 25!year old self. Hell now my 35 year old self. It’s so bizarre. I do want to be able to move and enjoy life.
I love exercising & being active because it makes me look & feel AMAZING, I value my body & want it to function well for many years to come. I’m gonna die one day, so I choose how I want to live! Paddleboaring, weightlifting, yoga, walking, stairs instead of elevator, stretching, tennis, nature trail hikes, snowboarding, horseback riding, swimming…I do and love it ALL!!!
The only thing I miss about being young is being toned..so I do have to s strength train to keep my strength up at 52…perimenopause is a trip
So true we cannot not wake up about this it's so important❤❤❤ Continue to love yourself just the way you are know it can change and you can do better😊
Thank you, thaaaaank you ,I'm 68 and want to live healthy and move without pain at last someone saying and educating us with truth
It's exactly why I insisted on doing PT prior to back and hip labral tear repair surgeries.
Amen to that, Sista! Thank you for stating this clearly. Who the hell wants to look like 25! I certainly want to be bungee jumping and rock climbing at 80.
Yes, in many Countries, it is built into the way the cities are designed to bike ride and Use accessible public transport which means citizen are active and walk more than ride in cars.
I exercise for mental health and it just happens to help my physical. I am 48 years old at 130lbs and 28 inch waist. I enjoy exercise...mostly biking, walking and doing stairs plus some weights at home. When you enjoy doing certain things...there is no effort to it. I used to have way more anxiety...much better now.
Thank you ! For me its not losing mobility at all . Release in my brain to feel well mentally and physically.
I lift heavy weights and eat clean so I can be there for my grown children and grands, ride my motorcycle into very old age, be the best friend I can be, and be the best partner I can be for my partner. My partnership status is committed but new, so whomever that is, maybe him, maybe someone else, or maybe I’ll be single. But whatever, I’ll be strong and happy.
Thank you! I couldn't say it better my self. I've lost a lot of muscle .
Excellent point , thanks a lot for your information.
I was a competitive, superfit athlete until menopause came along. Everything changed. I need an alternative to all my previous exercise which I relied upon to reduce stress. Big problem is that light, less intense exercise doesn't cut it. Slight stress relief at a time when one needs it most. So hard to come to terms with
This is great and the Industry / Marketing needs a revamp
Thank you for this
Thanks for keeping it real!
Should start way before menopause starts but most people play the catch up game and get frustrated when they feel it's almost impossible and give up.
Spot on!!!! So. So. So important.
Thank you for saying this. Sooo true! I’m over trying to look like a young woman and not trying to be the best version of my 53 yr old self.
Absolutely well said
Yes the F word here is functional, keeping active❤so true!!
Yes!!!! Ma’am. For real. I just love you.
Same here. People don't get it. I strength train and do yoga. Especially since it helps keep my body in balance and keeps the (hip mostly) pain away. Ever see a car going down the road out of alignment with the swervy driving and deteriorating the tires and possibly body and manifold damage? Working out keeps our bodies in alignment as well.
Exactly what she said !
I agree with what you said about the young people not getting it. .. but we know we need to stay strong and so we can age well 👍👍👍
Preach it, sista!
Say it again sissy 🇯🇲🇳🇬this is why WE NEED TO DO THESE EXERCISES
You look amazing ❤❤!!
I started weight training this year (38) because I’m approaching 40 and my mama, who is obese, is having such a sharp decline and won’t last long and it’s hard to watch.
Amen sister!!!
You’re so right. I’m in that place too where I feel that I have to be fit for my grandson. Health is everything for me. These constant aches and joint sprains are such demotivaters.

Preach 🎉all about internal. It doesn't click until it happens to them
Yes this part...
Thank you so much for these words of wisdom.
We need to be able to move around and not have weak muscles
Exactly!!! Iam 51 years old. I was working out this morning at the gym trying to get my body to to when I was 25. Impossible because that belly is soooooo stubborn. 😩😩😩
Amen❤❤❤❤ just fighting Father Time over here and the ability to tie my shoes and not fall over😂😂😂
Your words are so true..
We need more women doctors like you because you get it. So many women are suffering greatly because of the decline in the Medical system to help us.
Amen 🙏 Preach it Sister, continue to reply to these misinformed people. U got a new follower 🎉
I agree I’m 44 and do not wish to go back we want to age well
Amen 🙏🏽
Bravo Madame
At 76 I can tell you that strengyhing your inner core is the best thing you can do for yourself during aging. The other stuff doesn't matter if you don't strengthen your inner core.
Well I am 51 and I would like to look 25. I look 35 now...😅
Yay!!! Preach!
I would love to hear any differences from early surgical menopause vs natural menopause
I need the energy to go back and exercise. Omg

Thank you so much.
This needed to be said.
So beautifully said…I want to age well….that’s so true 😊
Exactly... 💜
Exactly exactly exactly take care of my everyday activities and most of the reason I stopped moving is because I have fibromyalgia arthritis cervical spinal cord compression spinal cord degeneration spondylosis and whatever else so I'm hurting and I don't want to move so my muscles are so weak
Yes yes so true
Yes
Exactly.
Truth!!!!!
This is why I’m looking for a older trainer. Someone who is familiar with the over 40 and menopausal woman.
yup
Yes x
Amen, girlfriend 🙏
Well stated, important message for real women. Well done
