Why We Choose A Life of Less Junk, More Journey // RVing the Outer Banks, NC

We visit Wright Brothers National Memorial in the Outer Banks of NC and see where the first successful powered flights happened in 1903. Experiences like this remind us of why we RV full-time with our kids.

The Wright Brothers were from Dayton, Ohio and returned here after Kitty Hawk. On the outskirts of Dayton is the US Air Force Museum that houses a fantastic display of aircraft, including an Apollo space capsule. It is free and it is an awesome stop if you are ever in the area. Great parking for RVs and easy access off of I-70 or I75. Come visit. You can also visit one of their bicycle shops.

Two things. I totally relate to being stressed all the time you were at the beach because of the threat of getting stuck. We took our RAM 3500 dually, 2 wheel drive onto an ocean beach, following a brother-in-law, (which has been how I’ve got trucks stuck every time, following bro-in-laws, I mean) and the entire time at the beach for me was one of worrying about getting off the beach. In the end, we didn’t get stuck, so then I was bummed for the rest of the day about wasting all that time being stressed. Second, when we went full-time RVing, my wife’s family tried to do an intervention for her, thinking I had kidnapped her and was forcing her to live in a metal box with wheels. They couldn’t imagine anyone would actually choose to do something like that. Thanks for the video. The Wright Brothers are heroes from my childhood.

My family vacationed at the Outer Banks when I was 10 or so. It was me, my parents and two brothers. We visited the Wright Bros museum. I am 60 years old now and have since lost my parents and both my brothers. That vacation is one of my favorite memories. What you are creating will last a lifetime with you and your family. You have found your why, which is more than you may think. It is more than for your family. It is for all of us on the other side of the camera too. Love your vids and I am a huge Simon Sinek fan. God Bless.

I totally get it Marissa. I went into nursing for a few reasons. 1) I loved taking care of people 2) More money. I was a single mom. I worked 2-=part time jobs and barely made ends meet. Yes....I was able to make the financial ends of things meet as a nurse; however I sacrificed the greatest of all.....TIME. Time with my kids. I worked night shift so I could make that extra little bit, but ultimately sacrificed the greatest of all.....time with my kids. That is why I totally support you guys in what you do. That time you have with your children is such a short chapter in life. Enjoy and cherish every single minute.....every single second. Thanks for sharing.

SE Michigan here. Our daughter is 16. The cool thing for ALL the teens-preteens to wear are Birkenstocks with socks-any socks, but for the girls it’s slipper socks- Ugg fuzzy socks are the coolest thing to wear w your Birks. The guys wear Nike white calf length socks w their Birks. The best thing. I saw was my daughter walking out the door with socks on and then put her flip flops on. So no worries guys, wearing socks w sandals is now the cool thing to do.

My wife and I saw the original Wright Bros flyer a few years ago, and it looked identical to the replica, even the display was the same. It’s amazing how far we have come with flight over the past 120 years. Heck, it’s amazing how far we’ve come over the past 50 years, and to think where we’ll be in the next 50 years, if we don’t destroy each other first, or God decides He’s had enough. I’ve never been to Wright Field, so it was nice to see it through your eyes. And all the historical facts you shared with us. No doubt everyone on the beach was watching you and thinking, what the hell is wrong with that guy!

I just turned 50 and I left my job of almost 30 years in 2016 I have been doing Realestate and made so much more money than being in Banking. I have also learned new skills that I can work from anywhere when ready. My husband has 4 years left before he can retire and I think I have him convinced to take this journey with me. I am from North Carolina . We went to the outer banks one year during July 4th. The Outer Banks is a beautiful place . We waited to do everything. It was 4 hours to eat at a restaurant. We camped with a tent at several campgrounds. The most interesting campground included a hostel. You could stay in the hostel . They had peacocks walking around the campground and if they caught your door open to the tent they would come walking in and check everything out.

The kids playing ball was so cute! Your stress was familiar to me. We were just RVing on the Oregon coast in Aug/Sept. My husband drove down onto the beach at Fort Stevens State Park with our big Dodge Ram. We were stressed the whole time, too. We didn't know you were supposed to air down your tires until later. But we made it up out of there without any help.

The magic of corrella is to drive on the road until it ends, then go for it. You encounter homes built randomly in areas without driveways, streets - it's all random. You wonder how did they get the materials there! And there are wild ponies with sand dunes mingled inbetween houses. My drive (in my 4wheel orignal RAV4) is a humors tale. When I finally meet you I will tell you it. We drove past tree stumps in the shoreline or in the waves depending on the tides. OH and Publix wasn't in NC back in the day! As a matter of fact I spent summers with my cousins & family friends behind Jockey's ridge. Then there was an old white Church and an ice cream stand - nothing else for miles and small random homes. The big group family rental homes were not there. And the homes past Corrella came later too (some home built piece\section at a time were ). I LOVE the outer banks!

Did you know that Laura Ingalls Wilder rode in a covered wagon when she was a young girl, cars were invented. Then before she dead at age 90 she flew across country from MO to CA to visit her daughter? That is an amazing fact that I tell many people when they visit our little one room schoolhouse. Technology at that time was crazy! I guess it is now to with all the computer stuff.

Maybe it’s because “finding my why” hit home and made me think about my own desire to live the RV lifestyle and question what it is that’s holding me back. Thank you for being you and thank you for sharing your wonderful and exciting life with us.

Until we lived in Kitty Hawk, we didn’t know that the first flight did not happen in Kitty Hawk. It was in Kill Devil Hills, where you were, but they went to Kitty Hawk to send the telegraph to tell of their accomplishment.

Nathan and Marisa, I enjoy your videos so much! Your journey makes so much sense, thanks for taking us along with your with your awesome family! I too am a nurse who just retired this year. The week after my retirement my brother (also an RN but not retired ) and I went on a 6 month RV journey out west. It was the best experience yet!! I love the quote by Amelia Earhart, there’s more to life than being a passenger! We are looking forward to many more adventures!

I love living on coastal NC. Even though I have driven on the beach for years, I know that even experienced drivers have problems sometime. Great job getting up the hill on the first try. I love the OBX and was just there the last week of October. The children also wanted to make a return trip to the Wright Brothers Historic Site. We ended the week on Ocracoke Island for Blackbeard's Pirate Jamboree which celebrate colonial days and Blackbeard's legacy and connections to the island. I'm glad you enjoyed your time here in North Carolina. Safe travels.

I’m so glad you MDE it to the OBX! And Camp Hatteras is one of our fav campgrounds. We’re so fortunate to have it basically in our back yard. We all ways stay on the sound side for the sunsets. The OBX is an awesome place to stay and visit.

So cool to see this! We are at the Outer Banks now! Just loving all there is to see and do and just loving walking the beach every day. Yes, the amount I research we do as well 😳 it’s been so nice to just enjoy the OBX for a few weeks! The ramp just to the south of Oregon Inlet Campground looks pretty easy. Way easy compared to your ramp i.e. hill! Yikes! Love your “whys” Marissa.

He blasted up it. That is the trick. You go slow and you get stuck. Awesome job, Nate. Hensley was tiny when i started. Her little pink boots were a staple.

Love this video. My favorite book over the past few years is The Wright Brothers by David Mccullough. It blew me away and inspired me. They were not rich but the had great family in support, especially their wonderful sister. I loved how they never gave up even though they had to make some of their own tools, live in a cold cabin and often had very little food. The locals helped them a lot and gave them food. Kittty hawk was extremely isolated and hard to get to (no roads). I love that your daughter wants to invent something. What a wonderful mom moment as you said. My very best to your family. Love from Santa Cruz Ca.

Wow, they have really spiffed up the Wright Monument area since I was there last. Looks like a lot more fun. And to Marissa -- Hensley's wanting to invent something means y'all are being successful in raising her without boundaries or limitations in how she envisions what she can do in this world. That alone is priceless. You cannot know what your kids, or grandkids, may do because of how you are providing a childhood so rich in experiences and learning.

24 years ago, my hubby and i spend our honeymoon in the outer banks, loved it so much, we went back a few times but then discovered myrtle beach (south is best) and love that more as there is so much to do, yet the south side is still kind of like the outer banks, just more to do.

You were not on The horse area of Carova Beach actually you were on Corolla Beach. The reason you were getting the looks. You needed to keep traveling north until the road itself turns into beach. You’ll know it when you’re there.
