Installing A Tankless RV Water Heater // RV Upgrades

Most RV water heaters are too small! We think installing a tankless propane water heater is one of the best RV upgrades you can do, especially if you're a family living full-time in an RV.

When we went full-time about 18 months ago, it was a must for my wife to have a tankless hot water heater. I had the furrion tankless installed and we live it, it actually saves on propane usage. The only downside we have found is when we are staying in an area where the outside temperature is constantly above 90 degrees. The tankless has a hard time adjusting itself and will often reach 10 to 18 degrees hotter than it is set at. The closest fix we have discovered is to turn the hot water on the faucet and switch the power off to tankless heater and wait until the water runs cold then turn the tankless on. Hope this helps

Family of 4 and never seem to run into a lack of hot water, but we do need about 10-15 minutes recovery between bigger back to back showers. Sounds like your routine will benefit from this plus being full timer. Enjoy the hot water, love to hear a follow up on how you feel the propane usage has been after a month or so.

A Furrion tankless water heater came with our new 2022 GD Reflection 28BH fifth wheel. The salesperson made only a brief mention of it. This is a hidden gem. We love it, and it performs better than words can express. Never a problem with running out of hot water during our camping trips. Temperature is always consistent and always provides as much hot water as we want. If you're thinking of upgrading, don't hesitate! Great video, as always.

Since you have a meter that can do volts and can read millivolts you can do a lot of testing easily. One - Start with the engine off. Measure the DC voltage at both batteries (in a parallel connection like yours they should be the same) you want to see 12.4-12.6 with a fully charged battery. Now start the truck, turn on the high beams, turn the heater blower on full. Now check the battery voltage again. Under load you want to see 13-15 volts because the ECU will bump up the voltage to charge the batteries and still power the loads. If you don't see that the alternator is suspect. Next is to see if the alternator might have a bad diode in it, that can cause problems because the components are looking for clean DC power, AC will do bad things, for this test you simply disconnect one of the batteries negative terminal and then go to the other one and set your meter to AC and measure the battery voltage with the engine running. You want to see zero volts AC. Now take your meter and with it set at around 20 volts connect one lead to battery positive and hold the other lead on a good bare spot on the engine, In a perfect world this would read zero volts. However because of corrosion, resistance in the wire you will see some, BUT you should not see more than a very few millivolts, Anything higher than that and you will want to check and clean the battery cable connections to the engine block. Now do the same thing but to a bare spot on the truck body, Same thing you want to see as close to zero as possible, now check the frame the same way. Replace or repair connections as needed. Same thing will work with trailer lights and brakes, you would be shocked at how bad some connections with get in a short time. GM has been having braided ground straps from the block to frame fail in under 2 years! Other makes like your Dodge use similar connections and that brand is very well known for having bad grounds. As for parasitic draws there are a few ways but one of the better methods puts your meter in line on one of the negative battery terminals (you do need to disconnect the second battery while testing). For that method try Brian over at the FordTechMakuloco channel. He covers the old school way to test for draw.

We have battery issues with our Ford. We appreciate AAA battery service! Make sure your stereo and AC are off. And unplug everything. Phone chargers, tire minders, etc. we discovered that all of those things stayed on even when we turned the ignition off and consequently had tiny little parasitic drawing down the battery. The AAA battery service is amazing.

I find it interesting how little hot water you got from your 10 gallon hot water heater. I would have changed too. But we are in our 2nd unit with a 6 gallon hot water tank and running propane and electric we can’t out run the water, it’s like an instant hot. Maybe it’s the settings, maybe we have less pressure that gives the water more time to heat, maybe it’s that it’s easier to keep six gallons heated than 10, who knows. But as a family of four and long shower takers we have never had an issue. Because of that and the few draw backs of an instant system (navy showers are intermittent cold shots if you don’t have a water miser installed) we never considered changing. Also like that even when all shut down we have a tank of hot water we can use if needed. Good video, glad you got it installed and looks like it will for you and your family.

My husband does the dishes nightly while I give the girls a bath and every single night it's the same question from him, "babe, are you done showering the kids so I can do the dishes?".....seriously, I need to travel with an RV tech too! 😂

Save hot water doing the dishes. Boil a kettle of water and mix it with cold. Rinse with cold. It works great, I do it every night.

Truck issues with our Ram 3500 Dually 2017. 20,000 miles we have a shimy in the front end. Thought it was a broken belt on tire. Replaced all 6 tires since they were 5 years old and we are now pulling our 2022 351 momentum. And a front end alignment but that did not fox the problem. We have wear in the outside of the front brand new tires after one 2.5 hour trip….. someone suggested airbag……MD isn’t a great place to have truck upgrades few and far between mechanics work on dullest in these parts

I had the same issue with the dyeing battery issue, in my ram pickup the alternator would charge and when not in use it would drain the battery from a malfunction in the alternator, put on a different alternator and all fixed.

What I meant to say is if some of this is misspelled or hard to understand is because I used Siri and it doesn’t always come up right I went back to edit the message but I didn’t see that option I’m not very good at these things I know a little more about truck and camper repair luckily though then I do cell phones and computers lol PS what I was saying is the time you guys were Niagara Falls I had a wrecked parts dodge 3500 truck with factory air ride and I would’ve gave you a good deal but you made the right choice air ride whether this factory or aftermarket is never as good as adding extra springs; also the message I sent you after the Niagara Falls video( that I’m not sure if you got because I’m not exactly sure how to leave messages on KZread) was asking if you still had any of the stuff you took out of the solitude like the couches or light fixtures I am remodeling a 2004 camper I like to put the newer furniture in it . Thanks

I hate our "endless" water heater in our 397. All it means is we burn 10lbs of propane a week for our fulltime family of 6 and I have to run and constantly fill our 40lbs tanks. I'm considering going back to a 12 gallon suburban water heater.

We had a Truma in the Airstream. Yes this one does not have to be installed by a dealer. You can install it yourself.
