Why we become fanboys

Starting with the early console war between the Sega Genesis and the Super Nintendo. This is my story about how life can alter our decisions in ways we don't even realize at the time. And how our perspectives can shift based on circumstance. This is "Genesis Kid"

My father decided that buy a master system because he read about its superior graphics in a newspaper article and he wanted us to have the best. The master system was not popular at all in Canada but I could brag to my schoolmates that it had better graphics and 3D glasses. We spent hours in the evening watching him play Phantasy Star, the one game we couldn’t play because it was in English. I think it’s the most time I spent with my father as a kid. Last week, I installed a big lit Sega sign in my game room.

@@driftingatoms It has only 7-8 games made for it, I think. Without the glasses, the image looks blurry because each sprite appears twice, with a slight offset. There is an LCD shutter in the glasses that alternates on each frame to block the image for one eye, so the brain is fooled in seeing a depth effect. It looks similar to what you get on the 3DS I think. I still have Space Harrier 3-D, Zaxxon 3-D and the glasses.

I'm only 20 so all my memories with Sega are long after the console wars. I had the benefit of hindsight and lower cost of systems and games to be able to enjoy more than I would have in the 90s. Genesis was the first game system I didn't have to share with my brothers, and my best Christmases are always associated with Sega: Sonic Adventure in 2014, Sega Saturn in 2017, Game Gear in 2018, and Everdrives and other flash solutions most recently. I realize after so many years Sega has stuck with me as a means of relaxation and inspiration. The games really are awesome and unique to their own hardware and time periods. The story with your uncle was also really touching and the editing is awesome. New subscriber rightfully earned.

Thank you for sharing this. I love that Sega is a staple in your life even as a younger generation. Gives me hope that maybe they can return to console space. All of my strongest Christmas memories are also around Sega consoles. Sega really is a comfort place. I recently returned to playing way more Genesis stuff and will continue to explore the many games I never had a chance to.

One of my best memories was when we worked together at an arcade and gamestop. Just immersed in the last golden age of gaming. Also my friends and i in the 80s and 90s werent fanboys. We coordinated to play the most games. We discusse who would get what system and games, and share freely among eachother to maximize access to games for everyone..thus went on throughout 90s.also i got hooked on games for similar emotional reasons..but mine was empowerment. The unstable life RNG i got was rough... games.made me realize that...in a video game, i child can outsmart, and defeat the adults. Co op games like double dragon and contra cost $ so it was best to work, with and teach, your less experienced/ skilled partner. The incentives to play games are radically different in todays mainstream games. Great vid, knowing personally the work that goes into them.

I had a SNES from my parents and I saved up enough to buy a Turbografx during the console wars - but I didn't have enough cash to keep up with everything that was needed for the Turbografx, so I sold it pretty quickly. I know that feel. Back when Frontiers came out I was really excited and I got to the third island on release night I think when the booze hit me and I went to sleep. Then at like 5AM my mom's little black cat I got for her starts slamming against my door and squalling like he's being attacked, and he runs away, trying to lead me somewhere. Then go downstairs to find mom gone in bed, her eyes were wide open. She just had a kidney transplant, and didn't follow the strict guidelines for the followup because she was a boomer therefore the doctor didn't know what he was talking about, so her body rejected the kidney and made her eternally sleepy. Weird to think one second I'm playing Septic the Shitlog, then a few hours later I'm screaming into my phone and crying at the at the coroners when they showed up, making a total fucking ass out of myself in front of my neighbors. Shit sucks man. Like 3 days later I got a letter in the mail from an anonymous neighbor chastising my sister and I for screaming like that at so early in the morning as well as ambulance lights/sirens waking them up xD They probably didn't know tho

Sports teams and more can be thrown in I mean if we want to be technical a fan of the sport shouldn't even be biased towards a team rather than a good game with decent back and fourth. Finally managed to watch your video. I enjoyed it and you're spot on. I live in EU and was a SEGA kid 'till the very end. I fell in love with video games from the first moment I was exposed and played anything I could get my hands on but the first console I owned was SEGA Master System II with Sonic built in. From the first moment SEGA logo appeared I fell in love with SEGA and Sonic. God knows how many times I finished it that 8-bit masterpiece. Consoles and games were so expensive in my country so my family couldn't afford me a Mega Drive (Genesis) and I had to settle with Master System at the time. I didn't care because I loved playing it so much. Over t he time I enjoyed Mario, Nintendo and Sony and owned PS1 & 2 but my heart always belonged to SEGA. They were special. My heart broke when I read the news SEGA won't be making hardware anymore. I miss SEGA a lot. Greetings from Croatia.

I said this in a comment on a video about the console wars the other day, and I'll say it again here: The part that most people arguing about the 16-bit console wars these days seem to forget or just willfully ignore, is that not only did Sega of America shoot first and make it personal with their Genesis Does and "Blast Processing" ads, but that carried over into its Genesis fanbase too, and indeed persists to this day. Neither Nintendo nor SNES fans started with all this childish, bitter, aggressive, hateful and these days sometimes even bordering on illegal crap with the way some people act and the lengths they go to. I didn't become [or get labelled] a SNES "fanboy" until recent times, where, as I was doing some research on how SNES works because I was interested in creating something for the system I loved as a kid, I kept coming across videos, comments, forum chats, etc, all attacking and/or lying about the SNES for apparently no reason other than some long-held bitterness some people haven't been able to let go of for like 30+ years or something. And, when I starting responding to the haters and really just defending the SNES from their attacks and lies, relaying some objective technical facts about each of these systems rather than a bunch of skewed data or just outright lies, and calling out a bunch of insidious attacks on SNES but without specifically attacking the other consoles, I then got labelled a "fanboy" and a bunch of other random things, had false narratives and outright lies spread about me, and then was literally cyber stalked, cyber abused, pile-on harassed and even doxed by a bunch of deranged lunatics basically. Shame I can't just come in here and have a positive conversation about these systems and even celebrate my personal system of choice in these public forums without fear of insane attack, but that's what some of the utterly toxic people in the gaming "community" have created. Even if I simply came in here and said something nice about SNES to add my bit to the conversation, the odds are at least one or two of the people who've been stalking me for around two years at this point would come in and post whatever troll gibberish, making sure I never have a chance to just have a normal positive conversation around SNES without them creeping their way in at every possible opportunity. And it's not that they simply come in and comment on my comments, which would be totally fine, but that after having stalked me across the Internet and openly admitted to forming an actual mob and personally stalking and attacking me countless times--they literally said a bunch of "Genesis fans" and even some well known Genesis indie/homebrew developers have all come together in some forums or wherever and are actively targeting me, be it just trolling or actively trying to get me removed from certain forums and such--they then come in and comment on specifically my comments over and over saying the same usually attacking and often untrue things about the SNES under multiple alt accounts as if nothing is unusual or utterly creepy and weird and deranged about that at all. Not saying you're remotely doing any of that, but just making the point since it seemed relevant to the title of the video and the whole modern Genesis vs SNES console wars thing in general. And, at this point, if there's even a small link to what's been going on in this "community", I'm going to mention it for the next little while wherever I can as I get some of the frustration off my chest and let others know about it too. Anyway, it's fine to celebrate the console you love, even have different opinions and maybe even hotely debate them at times (especially in videos literally titled "Console Wars" or "SNES vs Genesis" and the like), but it's not fine or at all normal to cyber stalk, cyber abuse, pile-on harass and even dox people over basically nothing more than a difference of view regarding a couple of consoles. That's just utterly absurd, and it needs to stop.

  • @driftingatoms

I can’t speak to your personal experience. If that’s going on, it says more about those specific people rather than their console preference. That being said, that’s not even remotely close to the context of this video. Sadly, there are always going to be toxic fans of everything. I’m sure that same type of behavior exist within other communities. Including SNES communities. But it’s has nothing to do with the console. I personally love all consoles, and love that we can have different opinions. This opens up dialogues that wouldn’t be possible otherwise.

@@driftingatoms I have noticed SNES fans and PC Engine fans being like this too, especially more so in recent times, so it's certainly not isolated to one community or system. But, specifically to the actual 16-bit console wars part, which your video touches upon at the start, like I said, it did not start with Nintendo attacking the Genesis or its fans in its marketing for absolute sure. So, if there's all this particularly aggressive animosity and attacking type of behaviour between lovers of these systems decades later, I think at least part of that can be attributed to a company and its marketing department that turned the conversation into the war we now think of it as and spread that kind of attitude around school playgrounds back in the day. I mean, it's hard to turn around and publicly insult and even lie about one system and its fans in national TV ads and such, basically encourage your fans to then do the same, and that not have ramifications. And, all I know is, I didn't see many SNES fans attacking the Genesis or PC Engine when I initially started looking around for information on how the SNES worked in various development forums and stuff, but I did see others constantly attacking and lying about the SNES for whatever reasons, often even in SNES-specific forums. And it seemed to grow even worse the more I looked into it. And, when I started speaking up on behalf of the system I love most, those other people got real nasty and deranged real fast. So, personally speaking, I wish we could all just get back to some normal banter around these consoles, even if it's sometimes a bit of a heated but totally still sane debate in relevant places like those "Console Wars" and "SNES vs Genesis" KZread videos I mentioned, and also just celebrate each of them for what they are. And I'll leave you do to that now. You don't have to respond, as I understand fully what you are saying and hear you. Enjoy the systems you love, and have lots of great times with your gaming.
