Why Washer/Dryer Combos Are Usually Bad (& How That's Finally Changing)

Ғылым және технология

Washer dryer combo units have traditionally gotten a bad reputation--and for good reason in a lot of cases. So let's get into why the seemingly more efficient setup of having a washer and dryer in the an all in one unit doesn't usually work the way it should (and how that might finally be changing).

Been using an LG version of this for about 3 yrs and it's been great. It isn't as fast as using standard units, but it doesn't matter much when you don't have to move the laundry.

Here in the UK it's quite common to have a combo and again for the space saving the only down sidw to ours is that you can only fill the drum to a certain level then you can do a wash and dry, if you have loads of laundry to do it would take forever to do. Just my opinion washer dryers here are ideal for 1 person or a couple here, but that GE is so ideal here in the UK but again space is something we don't have and that machine looks massive

I'm looking for this tech to mature. Not because I want to save space. But because we are on a system where the cost of power varies depending on the time. Off peak is obviously the cheapest but we tend to be asleep during those times and no one wants to get up at midnight to change over the load from washer to dryer. I want to set it up on a timer to kick in at 11:pm and then wash _and_ dry the load without needing additional attention. We might even have, (dare I say it?) _two_ units and get _two_ loads done overnight. But by the time this comes around, I'll be retired, and with all the electric cars charging overnight, off peak rates will probably change anyway.

I had a washer/dryer we call them here in the uk they seem like something new over there and condenser dryers 🤷🏻‍♂️😂 It really wasn’t bad at all had a 9kg drum was big enough for a big double duvet but 5.5kg drying. It was really quiet everything come out really clean and a 1550rpm they were pretty much just damp by the time it finished spinning and that was before the dry cycle was a “hotpoint Aquarius washer dryer” . It was great till it developed a balancing problem and would take forever to spin unless it was basically overloaded weirdly lol. It was a bored fault so just gave it away still worked but Would take nearly 45 mins or not at all to spin a load so done my head in and it got replaced with a lg direct drive. But gt heat pump dryer which is amazing on electric ⚡️😃 If you live on your own like me or even with 1 child and 2 adults you can manage perfectly well with a 2in1 it’s so convenient having everything washed and dried in the same thing! Make sure you fast spin the highest setting was 1550rpm on mine or extra high spin dry 🌀 and everything will dry quickly use slow speeds it will take ages to dry especially anything below a 1000rpm. Do that and you will have no problems and save electricity and time 👍🏻🙂 I would not recommend this for a family of 4 or more as waiting for it to wash and dry say like on a hot cotton wash will take up to 3/4 hours to do it all. You do have quicker washes but I don’t use the quick or turbowash button on my whites or quite dirty clothes because they don’t come out clean. I only use quick options for darks and stuff that just needs freshening up.

The other unit we considered was the heat pump LG stacker which I believe had normal sizes of both IIRC but it cost even more than this monster, didn't have the month of supplies hopper and you had to manually move items between the halves of the appliance, the bonus they had with my shorter wife was lower controls than most stackers. @@geappliances In a separated washer/dryer the washing machine is smaller than the dryer (~4 cu ft vs 7cu ft) to ensure that the dryer has sufficient airflow when a full load is transferred from the washer to the dryer. How do you ensure sufficient airflow and should this be thought of as a replacement for a 4.8 cu ft washing machine, or a 4.8 cu ft dryer in terms of capacity?

@geappliances To further clarify, it sounds like this can handle the same size load as 4.8 cu ft washing machine, which would typically be paired with a 7.8 cu ft dryer. Is that correct?

I have it for three days and it doesn’t seem that impressive. Had 2 major issues already. Costco gave me 90 days to return it. First , issue it froze on the spin cycle with water for an hour. Needed to power off unit and restart unit. Then on the second cycle, when drying. It estimated 55 minutes. Took 4 hours and i had to pause the dryer and take the damp clothes and put it in my old dryer.

Congrats on the UltraFast! We're sorry to hear it's been a bit of a bumpy road so far, but we're happy to help. We highly recommend connecting it to WiFi and making sure it has the latest software update. This will be crucial in making sure it runs properly. Let us know if you have any questions!

@@geappliances I doubt a software update will fix that issue. It clearly didn't perform as advertised. This is the problem with new products, they just aren't tested enough before being released and customers end up being the testers and dealing with the issues and inconvenience. Make it work right first, then sell it!

You may have a bad copy. I have ran 5 loads through it so far and it has been WONDERFUL. Clothes are clean and dry. I already would not go back. Google the youtube video from yale appliances talking with the lead designer for the combo product. They tested, tested, tested and tested. This appliance is a game changer and this will absolutely be the new 'go to' way of doing laundry. 'Resist4', sounds like a heck of a handle. Do you have one of these or are you just here to grumble miserably about things you do not know about?

@@bryanandjamie2032 yes you can run wash or dry modes separately. It doesn't have that burnt electric clothes smell nor the residual gas smell. Everyone says the clothes come out cooler but mine lives in the garage where currently ambient is 80 to 95 Fahrenheit so maybe later I'll feel those cooler Temps. I have had the damp to magically dry feeling when I catch it right at the end of a cycle.

Oh and for everyone out there stop wasting money on detergent and softener, simply use about 2tbls of baking soda "much cheaper and does the same job" and use distilled vinegar for the softener. You are welcome!

Be careful w consistent use of baking soda because it’s very corrosive and tears up the parts in your washing machine!! I learned this the hard way and since the quality of parts these days that companies use for everything. Parts are not made to handle anything corrosive!!

I use cleaning vinegar and baking soda to get the urine smell out of my uncle's bedding. I ran out of softener and have noticed that the residue is no longer there. I'll take it that extra mile and get distilled vinegar to put in the softener compartment. Thank you. Maybe the reaction of mixing it with the baking soda will reduce any issues with machine parts.
