Why Was Christmas Banned in Scotland? What Scottish Christmas was like before...what it's like now

Did you know that Christmas as we know it now is only a very recent addition to the official Scottish holiday calendar? It’s kind of the ultimate comeback story as holidays go. Here’s a look at where Christmas in the British Isles came from, why it disappeared for centuries in Scotland and how it came back.

As a kid, my dad worked Christmas morning and although we celebrated, it was Hogmanay that was the big celebration, and all the traditions that went with that. It also went on for days.

Yes my dad also worked Xmas morning into the early 1970's ( in construction) although I suspect a wee refreshment would be imbibed with workmates en route to home. Hogmanay/New Year was the big one ! it seemed to last forever and we were still visiting relatives houses well into February ! As kids we got Xmas presents but also New year presents . Looking back for me in first position was Hogmanay/New Year with a lot of traditions which had to be undertaken in second was Halloween/guising with some guy fawkes bonfires stuck on to it ( Halloween was darker than the commercialised version today ) In third place was Xmas ( although at School it was becoming more prominent than the others - interesting that as society has changed with less christians and more non believers or different religions we are moving back to a winter festival as opposed to Xmas . This in some ways echos back to our pagan ancestors. but actually is more inclusive of all religions and those who are non religious

Really enjoyed this one, well done! Another effect was that the sporting matches didn't stop for Christmas in Scotland right into the 1970's. It wasn't uncommon to have a full football fixture list played on Christmas day 😯 Would be unheard of today.

Thank You team USA Kilts for once again researching and sharing the wonderful and true culture and history lesson of our Scottish culture and heritage. This is one of the reasons I love your station so much and I always share your content with my family and the other families I know. My reasoning for doing this is that so many of us don't know where we're from and it's hard to know where we're going when we don't know from whence, we've come. I feel if more of our children knew of their history, culture, and heritage we'd have far less lost children and tighter families as we share our common ground and history. So, once again the production and content from the team at USA Kilts is "Above Top Shelf". Happy Holidays one and all.

What do you guys think about the new Doctor Who portrayed by Ncuti Gatwa who debuts Christmas Day, and is wearing a Kilt in his first episode? Can you identify the tartan? Will you be expecting an increase in kilt sales to Doctor Who fans who love cosplaying the doctor in his various outfits? Doctor Who has been portrayed by 4 Scottish actors including Sylvester McCoy, David Tenant, Peter Capaldi and now Ncuti Gatwa. The Doctor has always had a love of Scottish style clothing too, from houndstooth and tartan check trousers and waistcoats, to jackets and scarves, Inverness capes and now even a kilt. How about developing a “Timelord Tartan” for whovians?

It wasn't until recently (I'm 50) that we started doing more of the Scottish traditions. It wasn't that mom wasn't a fan, but her passing three years ago really took our glue away for our family. She had her own traditions that have started to wane because she isn't here. Don't be sad, I know we will see her again and is most definitely in a better place, but my sister is still a bit affected. Anyway, after doing a few Burns' suppers, I absolutely plan on some first footings this year. Point is, we too are hungry for something new and something to pass along.

Very nice! Well done! We have always tried to observe First Footing as well as taking the 12 Days to relax and cocoon and enjoy friends, hobbies, family, and celebrations. Hogmanay parties when possible; piping and whisky and haggis when obtainable! Hie the noo! Slainte mhath! PS: Twelfth Night parties can be the best; be sure to max out the silliness and always choose a Lord (or Lady) of Misrule to MC the festivities!

My wife's grandmother grew up in the Auld Kirk in Dunbarton & Glasgow before coming in the 20s to Canada and then the US. Christmas was a stocking with either an orange or a lump of coal, but Hogmanay was well-celebrated. My wife continues to make Scottish shortbread at Christmas. Although my family's heritage also goes back to Scotland, we often had German-style Lebkuchen and (from what tradition I don't know) raw oyster salad.

I enjoy bringing nature indoors this time of year. Holly and mistletoe do not grow naturally here in Northeast states of the U.S. so artificial has to do plus it is safer for the many feline house occupants. I look for the music and songs that celebrate the returning of the sun, the solstice of the year.

Scotland didn't have a parliament in 1958. It was the British parliament who changed the law. Christmas was still celebrated in Catholic areas and Protestants who kept Christmas had to attend Catholic churches as their own churches didn't hold services for Christmas. As the Catholic Church overtook the Church of Scotland in membership Christmas began to be celebrated more and Protestant churches began holding services.

+USAKiltsOfficial *Thanks for a summary history involving a **_Julverbot_** (auf deutſch), Advent complications, &c.* Christian congregations, following Roman Catholic precedent, set four Sundays immediately before 25 December, as Advent, with four lamps at 90° intervals on an Advent wreath and the Christ lamp dead center.
