@@einjohannis4711 Well, Mike Shapiro has been very, non confirming that it's a Valve title. He said it's a "blast from the past" but never said it's from Valve. Which means it very well could end up being Blood 3 (as thats the only major role he's had in a game since the half-life series came out)

It is kinda refreshing not only playing HL: Alyx but also Valve's being more transparent.

@@NazmusLabs HLA is about 10 hours, and my first playthrough of HL2 was 18, maybe even 20 hours. HLA is no Lost Coast, and is fantastically long for a VR title, but in my eyes it's not nearly the same length as HL2.

marshall branin IGN literally did a ton of valve interviews where they talk future games. There’s your source. Valve says they didn’t want to shut out a large portion of the player base with vr so they decided to do alyx instead. What did that mean to me? I don’t think VR will be mainstream until probably the end of this decade or close to 6 years. HL3 won’t just be a single VR title. I gave you the sources

The worst part is Valve rarely acknowledged the events of Half-Life: Opposing Force and Blue Shift due to being developed by Gearbox Software. The only thing Valve acknowledged is the destruction of Black Mesa as depicted in Opposing Force.

1) Half 2 Episode 2 is some of the finest gaming ever created 2) I still get emotional thinking, hearing, or seeing the end of Episode 2 which says something about their storytelling 3) Regardless of what the reasons are, the fans deserve closure to this series 4) Half Life Alyx has been incredible in my 5 hours so far 5) Would love to see Half Life 2 Episode 3 in VR bring the cliff hanger to a close

Literally, most game developers just tack on extra levels made from the same assets when they go episodic. Hell thats the whole point of episodic games, just make MORE without doing anything new or designing a separate engine.

Agreed... Problem is Valve decided they doesn't JUST do Half Life games for the sake of the story anymore... They are willing to wait with the episodes for some big technological upgrade in the world of gaming in order to release a brand new refreshed game... Honestly one of the things I liked about Alyx is the fact they used the same sounds from previous HL games and heck even soundtrack at times... I still would'nt mind seeing HL3 with same assests from previous games just the story being continued...

Yeah I find this obnoxious. They have an obligation to finish the damn story. The tech innovations in the episodes was great enough to just wrap it up for the time being. Then HL3 could have been another innovation, but Christ, they have to finish what they start.

memespace This. AFAIK the whole point of the episodes was to tell a story to completion via short bursts of content. The upgrades to Source that came with them were just little extras. At the point that they were at they could've just finished the story and freed up time to truly put time into what they wanted to do without the ghost of the series looming over the company as it has for the past decade.

Won't be much of an innovation, would just be a wrap up to the story. Which is what they didn't want. Also considering what Valve has said about their reasonings for not making half life 3, this could mean a golden age in valve where team fortress 3 could be released, portal 3 and even half life 3. However, this is just speculation. Edit: Also about the main comment. They did make something they finished Source 2 (the engine they were planning to use for half life 3) and made Half Life: Alyx which ran on source 2.

A Time ago, Probably Around More then 8 Years (Probably), I've Seen Something that Looked Like Half-Life 2 Episode 3 (When, Where People, were Telling me that Episode 3 was Still NOT in BULGARIA), Where The Thing Continues. Like When Our Guys are DEFFENCLESS, Against The Enemies. After Alyx Losing her Fogher, She and Gorgon Enter the Chopper, and then They Fly for the Target. Then a Time, after that While they are in the air, the Chopper, STARTS to Shake, and Alarm for Falling, Like IF They Can't Defend themselfs, Then... An Advizor is trying to Shake them Down. Also After they Land in a Snow area, They Leave the Broken Chopper, and Start walking to a Base. Then They Fight One or Two Hunters, And After that They Enter (Of Course Gordon Freeman Finds an MP-7). Later then After They Enter, Few Steps, and Then They Fight Some Combine and some Zomnies. Then Little walk, and they Start Walking to Ice Area with Platform Walking. Then They See some Advizors , but Don't fight them. Also Later They Enter the Borealis, Fight the Hunter that Killed The Team, Also... Fight Some Combine Force, Also, I Think, that There is also Barney Helping them. After that They Escape With a Little Boat (Well Only Alyx, Gordon, and Barney), And a Piller of Energy, Apears from the Ship (Like the Super Portal that In Episode 2 From The Citadel), (Like They were Trying to make a Newer Portal, from that Ship). And Then We See Some Light Explosions Like in Episode 1. (At the End of Episode 1). And Then The Game Ends. And a Fan Fiction Thing (I Think), Where It Continues, After the Blow.

CDPR should take notes from this. They kept quiet, didn’t advertise before even starting to work on the game properly, didn’t over-promise, didn't sell their integrity. They just delivered.

Where have you been the last 14 years? Ep 3 was a non-stop discussion from the time 2 came out till now. The talks became less and less as it became more clear we're never getting the game, but they did not keep quite by any means. Gabe talked about it a lot, ironically saying very little.

Shephard joining the combine to catch Gordon or Shephard join the resistance and become their leader for an upcoming huge assault or Shepard is prematurely waken up near Borealis and had to survive or something, help the Local to fight some huge fish monster or combine incursion (The ending be like, Gordon & Alyx arrive at the place and Shepard finally got to meet the man he was task to capture then the end. Epic cliffhanger confrontation haha). So many possibilities.

The original OP isn't really part of the Valve family yet it made a lot of impact on the universe itself... Having played Alyx I can definitely say that the wait was justified. This game really is a benchmark in the same way that HL2 was in 2004 and it is nearly perfect as it is

Big fan of Half Life 2, but was bit disappointed when they announced episodic releases. They didn't feel drastically innovative, more like DLC packs. I think they realized that idea wasn't meeting their standards and rather intrusive to their development schedule

They stated that the episodes are DLC. HL2 came out in an era when most games were expected to have DLC and lots of people believed half life should too.

Well...this didn't age well. Three years have passed and no news on Half Life 3.

Ah yes, the infamous Valve playtesters. The ones that got lost in a fork in the road, one that looped back to the fork and one that led out, so they just made the fork into a corridor. Valve catering "religiously" to room temperature IQ testers explains a lot.

Hl2 is One of the greatest games I’ve ever played in my life, at the time it was simply groundbreaking with the physics engine

Episodic gaming was going to be the future of gaming, turns out it was way more expensive then normal game production, remember Sin : Emergence ?

I hope soon in a E3 or something gaming event. The lights go out, the crowd whispering what happened. Then the only thing you see fading in his the half life logo with the number 3 next to it. That would send chills down my spine

We have forgotten, why Half-Life is Half-Life.. It's not a half baked master piece, it's a masterpiece with life and Valve didn't forget

If Shenmue 3 can happen, then Half Life 3 can happen too.

I get so giddy knowing that the ALYX team wants to make more Half-Life content after this! That stinger of the post-credit scene sold me on the idea that we'll get a continuation of Gordon's story soon after.

im still wondering, did alyx changed the past or she just changed the parallel version of herself? if gman took her in the end then gordon would never meet alyx

Well time travel is crazy to explain, she just changed the future and gman took the HL2:EP2 Alyx, but in the past she'd still meet up with Freeman like normal

[Spoilers???] I dont think there are parallel wersion of her, they propoble merege into one 'her' but with memory of Alyx that we played in Hl:A while at the same time other people remember her from future. ...time, Dr. Freeman? I would totally watch two movies to gain some perspective on that matter and can help understand few thing. Donnie Darko - Thats for ending of HL Alyx Arrival - to see gow g-man perception of time might look like, and for ending of HL Alyx also we can't really tell until next game arrives in 3-4-5years, but what im sure they aint gonna pull time travel gimmick as they did in avenger as it did felt a bit cheap.

Valve doesn’t know how to count to 3 (not HL ep 3,L4D3 nor Portal 3). The least Valve can do is release a non VR version of HL:A.

I could hear about Valves internal processes and development more than I wanna play any new games. Such a fascinating studio with seasoned developers that we still dont know much about on the inside.

Im 12 years old,i played the entire half life 1 and im playing half life 2,im so glad for knowing about this game series so early.Sadly half life is not too famous here in brazil.

Gabe has so much money by now that even GTA 5 money would make him *slightly* wealthier, and it would still pale compared to Steam's earnings. They're doing this for fun.

I have always seen Half Life as a real life experiment of sorts testing new technology, awesome to hear Valve say the same, respectable. Loving Alyx btw it goes hard.

Half Life Alyx was worth the wait, and I can't wait to see what they make next...

"We didn't want to go dark for so long" lol that intention lasted all of about five minutes

It's like a 7 and a half minute commercial patting valve on the back and about 10 seconds of providing an actual answer which isn't even that much different from what everyone has known for years.

Ian Radcliff several Alyx team members have said they want to make another Half Life game. And if they just wanted to do a VR side story, they certainly wouldn’t have ended it that way.

It be cool if they made an art book of all that un-used half life 2 beta art.

I sure hope that if HL3 ever gets developed, we get to play as either Gordon or Alyx, with weapons being unique to them.

@@thesensur6214 Have both of you seen the end of Half-Life Alyx? It's a big nod a to a real possibility of a HL3, spoilers: Alyx is hired by the G-Man, Eli's death is revoked, and Gordon is told by Eli he has work to do as Eli wants to kill the G-Man, this scene is shown lost credits!

lasago Yeah, I’ve played it. (It’s great.) But Project borealis is a half life *Episode* 3 Game Inspired by epistle 3 with Gameplay as close as possible to Half Life 2. And whatever happens next officially would be A *Half life* 3, Most likely VR, fairly different gameplay To Half Life 2and a different storyline.

its pretty much confirmed at this point the ending of Alex makes it very clear what direction there going in here

13 years passed since half life 2 wow. It blew me away back then. I wonder if we'll ever get half life 3 and system shock 3😓

VR is definitely a worthy platform for Half-Life sequels/prequels. The technology is still young but it has amazing potential, as shown by Alyx and Source 2

I haven't played Alyx yet but a test run of what Half Life could be after 13 years in VR seems like the perfect way to bridge the gap between HL2: ep2 and HL3 / ep3. Hearing the team is excited to make another Half Life title makes me very hopeful for the future.

The main point is that Valve would never make any Episodic format anymore and with the promising capabilities of Source 2 showcased in Half-Life Alyx, Valve would now be ready to make the real sequel. Not in the form of an "Episode" but full-on "Sequel" that we always need: Half-Life 3

After seeing the ending for Alyx, I'm glad Valve didn't make Half Life 2 Episode 3. The ending for the script of Episode 3 was a terrible ending for a lot of characters. I didn't like the idea of the borealis destroyed, Mossman killed even though the mission was the save her, and Alyx suddenly ditching Gordan Freeman out of the blue with the Gman while Gordan is trapped in a time paradox giving up to the combine. At that point, I didn't like where the story was heading.

The MOST clear, concise, explanation of why there was no more episodes or a HL3, well put together IGN!!!

The thing about the Half Life universe is that there are so many potential stories to be told within it, beyond just that of Gordon Freeman and Company.

Let’s not forget about the ending of Alyx do. “Gordon we have work to do”

Valve started making more money selling other developer's games than their own, it's not because of scope creep and all this stuff about the story. HL: Alyx is out because they sunk money into a VR platform and need a killer app to sell it.

i honestly think now is the time to be axcited about half life future. since Alyx reveal it feels like i've been living on a dream one that i hope it never ends.

The one problem I see with this is that Valve might make more Half-Life VR games and might even make Half-Life 3 a VR game so it could be another “next big thing” but I kinda want it to be a pc game with something in it that can still be a game changer for future games to come

It took Valve 13 years to expand the story by 15 seconds

Oh, I'm definitely ready for more HL in VR, and with a faster run n' gun pace as Gordon

the fact that they can make an incredible VR in four years gives me hope that half life 3/2 episode 3 will release sooner (unless of course they make another VR headset that tops the index, makes half life 3/2 episode 3 top alyx, which will all take a long time to do) Edit: I know the chances of this happening any time soon are low, but I also hope that they figure out how to make low cost VR headsets that are or more advanced than the index.

The thing is we want the best they got and when it finally comes out we have two options. Either be happy with what we got or complain it’s not what we wanted.
