Well he was talking about models made for us market, right? That's a downside of having assembly plants all around the world, the quality varies wildly. That's the same reason Japanese cars are way more reliable, most are made and assembled in Japan, hence the consistency. German cars used to be manufactured and assembled in Germany, with parts from local vendors. Those cars are still on the road today 😉

Sad, MB didn’t used to be like this. They made cars that lasted forever especially the S class. As a matter of fact, one time it was said MB would lose money on the S class. Those old Mercs were so well built and closed like bank vaults and engineered to protection. The had the highest resale, reliability and gas mileage with a Diesel in the industry. Sad how this great brand has fallen. It has also lost prestige with cheap lease deals, too many down market models, junk cars and engines which lower resale which has damaged what it once meant to belong to the “Mercedes Benz” Club. Now a person can get a Benz for cheap so driving a Benz isn’t saying much as it used to. Before cheap lease deals, cheap models and parts , a Benz was meant to be seen in and u didn’t see nearly as much as you see today. MB on cheap models and deals are selling close to 4x as many vechicles compared to old MB, which again takes away from the mystique of the star. Too bad that ppl who are running the company today lack integrity and running this once great car company into the ground. The prestige can only last soo long when a broke bum can have the same car as you in 6 years lol

Sorry guys I see lot of "endless money pit" quotes. I am an Audi fan drove Japanese vernicles for 20 years and switched to Audi A5. It's a world of difference. I enjoy the cruising power, high speed stability and super smooth duel clutch 7 speed transmission. If you bitch about maintenance look for Japanese. If you are looking for enjoyment and satisfaction go for a premium German vehicle.

@a3zth3tikz -- The thing is more people are leasing not buying because they know the cars will not last long term. I guess the companies have adjusted their business model to make most of the money on the lease by overinflating the initial value of the car. They will forced to sell the used vehicle at a depreciated cost but since the original value is overinflated they still make money.

Great video, but having been a Mercedes Benz employee for 8 years and have owned many since. So, why I/we only buy NEW Mercedes? 1) I want that experience and value of caring for my vehicle with regard to servicing and how it is driven since day 1. 2) No services are missed, never abuse the engine/transmission, careful about parking situations, and when not being driven, 3) our 3 Mercedes are garaged (always). 4) We don't smoke "anything" or eat fast food in our vehicles, 4) They get completely serviced when the service is due. We also enjoy a dealer-furnished loaner @ no charge while our Mercedes are being serviced. 5) The value of having full dealer support greatly adds to the value , confidence, and the Mercedes ownership experience. Without #5, it just wouldn't be the same. So many times I have seen where a person buys a 3-4 year old MBZ, and they "service" it at "Jiffy Lube" or similar, which is essentially only an oil/filter change. Doing only this over a few years or more is inviting disaster, but yes, it is cheaper. Typically, those folks will sell that car to someone unsuspecting the poor service & other issues, so it becomes a nightmare for them. Same thing happens with BMW, Audi and Porsche. I owned a '77 930 Turbo and a tune-up could easily be $5K US. If you think that's bad, better not buy a big boat or an airplane, just sayin"

You have to haggle them and finance it all together for best results. Stay away from anything before 2012. My rule of thumb was dump it at 80k as they are set to detonate previous to the 2012 models.

I’m the other way, I avoid warranties, the money you save if you invest it pays for a ton of repairs. I buy 3 years old, do an oil change each year at Jiffy Lube, and that’s it (I just ignore the B service). Flip it at about 6 or 7 years old. Never had an issue, Benz are tanks, as long as not too old. Owned an Audi once, never again.

These will be the most reliable as it it is mass produced and tested by masses. This is true about any European car manufacture. if you buy some exotic model, most likely it will have high maintenance cost and less reliable. And this is where MB and BMW, and VW/Audi makes the most money, on reach people and people who want them after warranty.

Mark, another great review. Keep up the good work, your content has been great lately. A lot of people buy a Mercedes today because they want to keep up with their friends and neighbors. This is never a good reason to do anything in life. Mercedes Benz has always been associated with wealth and prestige because you had to be wealthy to afford one. That still holds true and just because you can get a used one cheap does not mean the upkeep on the car will be cheap. Buy what’s appropriate for your budget and you will be a lot further ahead in life than trying to be something your not!

In 2018, I bought a 2014 C300 4MATIC with 34K miles for $18,000 (after getting rid of my $25,000 corolla that I despised). It now has almost 100k miles and I am keeping it until I die (I'm confident the car will outlive me). Admittedly, I replaced the drivers seat cushion after it tore (it was the jeans fault), and the interior drivers door handle just flaps freely and doesn't work (an easy DIY repair, but thousands $$ if I take it in I'm sure)... but seriously, it is such a solid car. Zero road noise, seats offer great support for long hauls, plenty of power, excellent handling, great sound system, and the standard features (dimming mirrors, auto lights, auto wipers, etc) are so incredibly useful you don't even think about them. I've had vw, audi, Toyota, and now two of these (first one saved my life in a serious high-speed accident) and its the most reliable car I've owned. People like to throw the service prices in your face... those are the idiot prices, just get an oil change, it's about $130. Oh, and it goes 10,000 miles between them... I'm getting an SL and a G wagon one of these days, but that's it for me! Love my c class

Thank you captain obvious. I have to disagree with you though on reliability. I have a 2015 S550 4matic that I purchased used in 2017 for 60% of sticker with 17K miles, they do in fact drop hard in value in the first few years but I have spent a total of 400 bucks on repairs outside of tires and brakes, and the brakes I did myself for around 600 bucks for front and back. These are rock solid cars that get a bad rap because of some of the older models. Ya, Toyotas are reliable but they suck on ride quality and overall experience.

Honestly, I really never lease these type of vehicles. I usually have a plan to where I buy and trade in my vehicle I had before every time it hits around 120k - 150k miles or I could just keep it till it breaks down. I don't drive that much to where I put a lot of miles though. I still have my 2014 Mercedes Benz CLA 250 that I had factory ordered from the dealership, still drives like a dream. No problems! Car cost me like $45,000, now that I find out my vehicle is almost worth nothing now. It is crazy how much these type of cars depreciate in value so much over the years. But hey, they are hella nice vehicles to have. You get what you pay for on that time. The fact that maintenance gets expensive, I really don't have to worry about paying too much, simply because I have some family members who are mechanics who give me discounted fair prices for maintenance on my vehicle. Unlike dealerships, they go way over price. If your not careful and you try to go to 3rd party places, you run a risk to getting problems if the repair is not done correctly for whatever. Now this can be oil changes, alignment, new tires, tire rotation, and so much more for whatever that needs repairing of course. I think people should buy luxury cars rather than leasing them if they CAN afford them. I really don't find it a good plan to be stuck on monthly payment of lease for a very very very long time. But its your money, do whatever you want with it. People should really do their research on the luxury vehicle they are interested in, not all models will not have as much problems as you think according to data records. Majority of Mercedes Benz models typically last up to 200k miles or perhaps little bit more if properly maintained. If features matter to people, people should factory order their vehicle and design on what features they want their vehicle to have for their convenience.

The only thing I hated about my new GLC-300 was that a spare tire was not offered. With my luck getting flat tires, this was very concerning. When I did get a flat at 3,000 miles the tire was not repairable due to a piece of road debris piercing the sidewall. A new tire cost me $388.00. After that I hated to leave my zip code! First owner took majority of the depreciation hit, car is still under warranty, and if you time it right and sell right before warranty you don’t lose that much. Great option for those who drive more than 10k a year, if you don’t drive that much then just lease a new one. Getting one off lease from the dealer originally sold it, especially if it included free scheduled maintenance, is much safer. The biggest risk on the private party and independent dealer side is low mileage cars with deferred maintenance from the owner. Missed/long interval oil changes especially, kill turbo cars at premature ages. As far as the air ride, if you’re worried about the cost of repair, most vehicles can be swapped to adjustable coil overs for about $1200-1500. And if you do the swap while everything is still working, you might be able to sell the compressor and bags to recoup part of your conversation cost.

@@rahimi4762 : the problem is not the cars it's what happens when you trade them in. It doesn't matter how well you take care of your MB or how bad the price for trading in is the same no matter what you spend and when. I just traded in a 2012 CLS550 and was offered $15k for it but two weeks before I completed the deal I spent $2k getting new brake pads and rotors all around and the trade in value was the same. So why keep up maintenance when you get no credit for it. That's why be prepared to spend $4k to $5k during first 4 to 6 Months.
