Too many people don't understand the difference between positive and negative reinforcement and positive and negative punishment and how to get the most out of them - so mega cool that you break it down into manageable chunks I need to tell you that your videos are amazing. There are many out there who only make videos with problem dogs, which I can't use much of for my own rottie in IGP. Too many people don’t understand the difference between -R and +P. Most people will give me a definition of the 2 but as soon as you ask for an example they have no idea. For example if your dog was forging in the heel how would you use -R to get the dog back in the heel and how would you use +P to punish the forging. Most have exactly the same protocol for the 2 but they are 2 completely different events

Negative reinforcement is exactly like 'pressure and release' in horse training and when I tried to explain this to the girl at the shelter, she thought I was crazy.

You should ask the girl how many dogs she’s seen euthanatized(killed) because of behavior issues. Behavior issues that could have been addressed and corrected using ALL appropriate reinforcement.

​@@vincef7487 We have a no kill shelter where dogs aren't euthanized for lack of space or behavioral issues unless it's in the red aggression, terrible quality of life or severely injured, otherwise they try to rehabilitate, retrain and rehome. I was there for two hours interviewing and introducing my other dog to the new one before I could sign papers. They rehome approximately 97% of all intakes and have an extensive fostering system as well as a designated onsite vet and a person with a animal behavior degree. We have great shelter it's just that they're not horse trainers.

I just get really frustrated by “dog lovers” in positions of power (shelter workers) who deem a dog “red aggressive” only because the dogs don’t respond to POSITIVE ONLY direction. They may have good intentions, but I see these people as lazy and selfish …and savable dogs are needlessly killed.

Just remember, if you’re presenting the food before you release pressure, you’re completely overshadowing any leash pressure. If you present at the beginning of moving him off the platform it’s just luring and the leash pressure is muddy at best. Clean timing is important! Would be great to do a video on timing of reinforcement, etc.

I have trained dogs but mostly horses the last 30 -40 years and im absolutely following you when i comes to negative reinforcement. I have good results of using negative reinforcement together with positive reinforcement in both horses and dogs.i dont see how to explain for the horse or dog what you really want them to do without negative reinforcement. Ithink its the only natural way of learning.From now on im focusing only on training my Border collie Betsie 2years old in obedience skills, and making her as comfident i can. The trend in dogtraining in Norway has developed into some messed up thinking about dogs and you cannot stop your dog from doing whatever he wants -then you are ditched and named as mistreating your dog. "The poor dog may get sad", when being stopped, sort of...Ive followed your youtube videos, and i find it very very useful, though i dont intend to do bitework and competitions like you do. I get so much information from your videos wich is giving me more knowledge about dogs. I plan to watch all your videos, to pick up hints and tips these days. I find lots and lots of useful information in them by watching what you are doing. So im planning membership in patron, because i want to invest more in the dog i have .. and to know more about dogs. There is a whole bunch of muddled information about negative reinforcement. Thanks for the clarification. Release, absence of the 'leash tug' reinforces the desired behavior.

I've seen many ideas from both sides of this coin, on whether or not negative reinforcement should be used before the dog responds. If they expect the leash pressure even after they learn the command, won't they expect the pressure when off leash, and therefore not complete the command? A method I agree with more is negative reinforcement until they understand what you want from them, and the leash pressure is only there to encourage if they do not obey.

For those who think you don't need a leash @2:57 in other words, the leash keeps the puppy focused on the task at hand, it leads the puppy through what is expected of him in order to get paid.

tried to teach my 5 month belgian tervuren to sit. Pulled the leash up pressed the butt down, you can push as hard as you want to he wont sit 😀 what would you recommend to do different? patreon gangggggg

Attempting to force our dog into a sit scared him. Attempting to lure him into a sit was unsuccessful. We taught it by capturing it. Waiting until we could tell he was about to sit, saying sit, marking, and rewarding. It was slow, but it worked well. We got him at 6 months old and he is extremely smart so it was weird that almost everything else was easier to teach him than sit. He may have been trained not to sit in his first household, supposedly that's a desired quality in show dogs.

Why do most people have postive reinforcement always following negative reinforcement? Can you really be reinforcing the same behavior doing that? Seems like more like softening the blow, like punching someone then giving them icecream immediately after. What’s wrong with negative reinforcement all on its own?

yea lets all ignore the fact that negative reinforcement is not needed for learning and you Absolutely DO NOT NEED IT!!!!! I'm okay with teaching lead pressure for walks so they understand how the lead should work but for if u NEED to use negative reinforcement to get a simple sit,down,place behavior you should be looking into why u feel its needed when science tells us otherwise and why would u want to use aversives when you do not have to. I've trained all these behaviors without negative reinforcement and the food doesn't need to stay, the way he makes it sound is that after one rep with food luring the behavior is learned which is far from true. Like for real let me put a lead on ur neck and just pull you into positions don't think you would feel "GREAT" about the training session.

It's funny that people in the comments compare this to pressure and release in horses. But, horses trained with pressure and release have trauma and behavioral issues, even when done correctly. Whereas when trained with positive reinforcement there's no trauma or behavioral issues when done correctly. That's because pressure and release triggers the fight flight and freeze response in a horse's brain. Whereas positive reinforcement triggers the problem seeking part of a horse's brain. Stress has no place in training, and when it comes to horses when you use pressure and release it causes anxiety, fear, and discomfort. It's important to remember that horses are prey animals, and any behavioral issues you see in horses are stemming from anxiety, stress, fear and confusion and or pain. And it's never okay to correct behaviors stemming from these issues, this is where behavioral issues come in and causes horses that are very dangerous.

Google Parelli Horsemanship and educate yourself so you don't repeat this embarrassment of a comment. A dear friend rescued a Thoroughbred and achieved a Parelli National Championship. A Thoroughbred is (usually) high strung to begin with. (It is COMPLETELY proper grammar to end a sentence with a preposition BTW) This rescue Thoroughbred was completely high strung from previous improper "handling". Through pressure and release, this horse was saved and rehabilitated without trauma or stress. As Clarrisa Magley stated, Andy, you are much too kind! Rant over... '
