It was because, he did have a job. Nobody didn't know anything about it.

The Tommy character was never a negative influence, he always presented himself as a positive, smart, and intelligent character. The character shared the same unknown trait as other sitcoms characters like the neighbor in Tool Time and Howard's mother in Big Bang Theory where the physical Identity was never revealed. The same for Tommy where the identity of his job was never revealed. It followed typical sitcom parody of the unknown about a character. Thomas Ford concern regarding the character is commended.

I enjoy Tommy Ford performance on Martin. However, his acting on the show New York Undercover was very impressive. A rather strong and silent character controlling yet connecting with other actors very well. My point is to have Tommy’s Martin Character interact with his New York Undercover Character. Michael J. Fox did the same in Family Tie and Spin City. Tommy’s joke you don’t have could have a bigger impact. Undercover Police Lieutenant supervision many operations but must remain quiet to his close friends.

I feel like it was important to display the image of Tommy NOT having a job but in a sense you knew he had one. He looked well dressed, never begged for money, food or anything in that nature. I believe it's how you convey a message without treating it like a message.

Met Tommy Ford a few years back. Dude was super humble and appreciative of his fans. I wish I would have known this then. RIP Tommy

@@bwillingham52 I think Tommy's character was low key inspirational. He was always clean and we'll spoken . Never scratching and surviving. I like it. Independently wealthy and sensibly private.

The writers didn't have to set him up like that, but it was a definitely a very memorable gag of growing up with the show: "You ain't GOT no job!"

Tommy Ford was a strong, intelligent character that didn’t get his best side in the sitcom. Just like how they make Cole look dumb, and make Pam seem like she can’t keep a man.

I liked the running joke, to me it didn't matter he wasn't at "work" he was too poised and articulate not to have an income. I cared more the writers didn't make him a womanizer and have an arsenal of children tucked away. I loved his character and how he gave the sensible advice to his costars. Gone but never forgotten.

Tommy came to my high school in 04 with his seminar telling us how it was important to have a job when we graduated. And one girl yell out while he was talking, "Tommy you still ain't got no job", and everybody hollered with laughter 😂😂 Even him

The running joke of Tommy not having a tangible job made the show. Whatever he did or didn't you knew he was not a thug or Thief he was not homeless he was not begging. He was well put together very very manageable towards women he was a role model for black men. Even though there was no mention of what he did for a living you still knew that he worked somewhere. I never took offense that this black man was not working or being a bum.

This is the only show that I will never stop watching 😂 I still laugh at the same jokes 😂 everybody always thought I was crazy when I said Tommy worked at the boys and girls club

Tisha Campbell actually revealed on a radio show that Tommy had a job. He was a counselor at the Boy's and Girl's Club

To be honest, after season 1 I always thought Tommy was a drug dealer. He had his own place, he always dressed nice, always had a pocket full of cash, and he always had women. He never seemed to struggle financially like the other characters on the show too. So yeah, I’m pretty sure he was moving packs. Lol

Jo Jo Dude it was a joke, relax. I actually watched the show every week while it was on the air, so I remember everything. I understand what the writers on the show did, but if it bothered him that much, he could have worked something out in his contract.

Thanks for this! Tommy was a good guy. I'm sorry he actually felt insulted by his character, but i think they just wanted it that way to keep it funny. It's a funny sitcom. Nothing should be taken personal. We all loved Tommy including his castmates. ❤

I always thought he was a detective. Remember when he was on NY Undercover? I thought (hoped) they had tied the two shows together.

1st I'd just like to say, "R.I.P." Tommy, I personally just took it as a joke but in my mind he had a job but just didn't disclose it. I think it would've been hard to bring Martin back though because he's not with us anymore, but I was thinking give Brutha man a chance to take his spot because he was always hilarious.

Tommy was a school teacher. I think it was mentioned in the early years of the show. After that, though, it became a running joke that he didn't have a job. But, I clearly remember Tommy asking Martin to come speak to his class on Career Day. His job was only mentioned once and then never again. But, he did have a job.

He was a drug lord in class act that’s why!

I remember I started rewatching Martin as an adult. I noticed a lot of stereotypical dialogue. Once I saw on an episode mocking of black African culture in way that was not only reaching for laughs but to degrade black people who thought culturally, I knew the aim. A lot of shows have this problem. Our society has this problem. Grateful Tommy took something negative and out of his control and made it into something positive. The dialogue was beyond getting laughs. PROGRAMMING

If I tell myself "I have a job", I automatically have a job. That's how I see it! 100. Thank you for taking an in-depth look into Tommy's career in youth development on the Martin Lawrence show!
