@@jeffw1267 I guess that’s the problem many people have to deal with these days. As long as somebody complains, no matter how unreasonable it is, or how few the complaints are, we have to do something to satisfy those people, or risk damaging our job or business. Martin made fun of the backlash in Funk It, by asking why so many women (or so they said) got offended by him telling them to “wash yo’ ass” and “douche”, and concluded that the main reason those protesters got offended was because they didn’t douche.

But you see, this was 1994. At that time, those crude sexist jokes he was making about feminine hygiene were considered very shocking for television. By today's standards, those types of jokes may be something he could be capable of getting away with since boundaries have been pushed, but for this time, that kind of raunchy humor was just not acceptable for television. ~Dutch

This didn't deserve a ban. I saw Robin Williams do an entire monologue on prophylactic usage to prevent STDs and Shakespeare themed porn. It was risqué, but Funny! Comedians have to take risk. Plus, these episodes air at 11:30 at night. Adults should be able to stomach a few crude jokes. If the crowd laughed instead of recoiling, it probably wouldn't have been a big deal.

@@shougokawada8491 I think the proper term you’re looking for is sexist. It may have been a little sexist and raunchy. But certainly not misogynistic. You do realize misogyny means the hatred or contempt of women, right? Like if I said “all women belong in the kitchen” that is not a misogynistic phrase, that’s a sexist phrase. If I said “Women are stupid and selfish humans” that would be misogynistic to put it in perspective for you. Nothing he said was hateful, just inappropriate for the setting. That’s the problem with this generation. Everybody wanna throw out terms like misogyny and narcissist, but very few know what the word truly means.

Martin brought the provocative Def Jam energy to a white institution. That explains the ban. This was in the era of "You So Crazy", which got an NC-17 rating upon release. His material was hard-core compared to the typically light fluff of that show's history. Even though SNL has had plenty of blue comics host the show, they usually water down their act for network TV. Martin simply did a joke with some X-rated subject matter, which automatically makes it dangerous even without the curse words. That's all. A few prudes in the audience clutched their pearls at a fearless black man, and Lorne Michaels tried to make an example out of him. As we can see, Martin's star still shined and his career prevailed.

I'm gonna make a few points here. 1. SNL was fine when he talked about castration but drew the line at feminine hygiene. Sounds odd if you ask me. 2. Someone cutting off a man private part is worst than a woman suffering from a yeast infection or telling her she stinks downstairs. You couldn't convince me otherwise. 3. I died when he was struggling to take his shirt off then did karate at the end. That was a funny way to end a skit.

Now, the castration joke was from Lorena Bobbitt and cutting ✂️ off her husband's penis, which at the time, was major news fodder on all the major news networks and tabloid shows. So, I'm assuming they were fine with those jokes seeing that that was the "story" of the week. And, believe me when I say that his jokes on feminine hygiene were, even in 1994 and 2023 standards, fucking take and really diluted to the point he's used the word "damn" to empathize other vulgar words he couldn't say on NBC( i.e. fuck, shit, MFer, dick, pussy, etc.)

@@shougokawada8491what an ignorant comment. How does Martin Lawrence hate women because he talked about what he dislikes about bad female hygiene. What kind of common sense are you operating on? Are you on drugs? If a woman says she doesn’t like a man with stinky balls, that does NOT mean she hates men as a gender. What a dumb thing to say. He’s making a nasty joke about bad female hygiene. He didn’t say women don’t deserve rights. Get over yourself.

Before the modern day comedy shows came, the only ones were SNL, In Living Color, and last but, not least, Def Comedy Jam. Now, SNL runs their show almost like a regular TV show, in which they have the sketches, special guest hosts, and musical guests already in place for the next season. So, before anything was shot for this specific episode, the SNL staff would have been smart to go and watch one of Martin's monologue on Def Comedy Jam to see his style of telling jokes because if they did, they wouldn't have let him be the host that night or any other night lol... He was TOO RAUNCHY for network TV, even with his own show on FOX, I'm pretty sure the network was on his ass as far as what he could and couldn't say. The best night of my life watching this 😅😂😅😂

I don't think you can say yeast infection on network TV. In the South Park Season 1 "Tom's Rhinoplasty" episode audio commentary Matt Stone said they had to change Wendy Testeburger's insult from "she has a yeast infection" to "she has explosive diahrrea" in order to get the episode to air. And that was on cable. I guess that's just really taboo to female executives.
