Thank you for watching!
In this video I talk about the power time has in our gaming experience, how it affects our tastes as we grow old and have less time to play, and how game developers use time as a tool for impact.

This was a video that I didn’t know I needed to listen to. I’ve been feeling some sort of way since I’ve turned 31 and am a mother. A longing for the past, it feels like a loss of youth and into adulthood. Going into the unknown and change is scary - but ultimately necessary. Very well worded - not even kidding this got me into my feels and brought a tear to my eye

Honestly, comments like this keep me going, I’m really happy that you could relate. Change indeed can be really scary, and we can often find ourselves missing the good times we had, but we still get to remember and maybe relive fragments of that, and surely some good, new and unexpected things still await in the horizon. All the best to you and your family, and to more happy memories to be made❤️

i cannot put into words how deeply this resonated with me. im sure everyone would say this at any age (as we are always the oldest we've ever been), but as someone in my mid-20s, i feel the gravity of time more than i ever have in my life. the way you talked about time as a currency really got me thinking. the way i view money as someone who lives very much paycheck to paycheck, often feeling like im holding my breath and willing for time to pass so i can afford what i need to live, puts a sour taste in my mouth in regards to the idea of spending. i suppose for me this translates to the spending of time, as well. i tend to dwell on the regrets i have on what i did or didnt spend on, time or money, not stopping to consider that its a blessing i have any of either to spend at all. even the time i've spent writing this comment nobody may ever read, much less gain anything from, is not worth nothing. i got to sit with myself and think, and i got to say what i wanted to say. my time and words are worth something, even if its only to me. all of this to say, thank you for spending your time making this video. it was time well spent.

Thank you for this comment! Definitely time well spent also. And it really made me happy to make a positive impact on you. I’m also in my mid-20s and feel time’s weight more and more. It’s not that long ago that we were kids and time didn’t seemed like an issue, how eager I was to get older and be able to do the things I couldn’t. But that change to adulthood really changes how we treat time and how much time we have available. Its always good to remind ourselves to enjoy the time we have instead of just allow it to pass by. Thank you for your kind words😁

Thank you very much! I’m glad you enjoyed it! Most of the music I used (including the first and the last) was from the soundtrack of Twelve Minutes, incredible soundtrack. From that game I used I,II, V, VII, IX, XII and O (they are all numbered) From Dead Space used the “main theme” from the remake. From Alan Wake 1 I used “Bright Falls Light and Power” From Baldurs Gate 3 I used “The Power (Coral Version)” Really happy you liked the music because I tried really hard to maintain an atmosphere with it.

It's like watching paint dry. I'm sick, and all I got is time. Old things get boring, as I change and get ready for change. Changes are stressful but stress pushes me and my body. I'm at a point that I don't really care for games. I just eat and sleep. That's how numbing it is. It's bit better than just ok. I played runescape, and I love it, but can't play it. It's a time sink. Bg3... Uhm... I don't know what is it... It's intriguing, but some of the knots are like oh please... I think about starting with new character, because it has been so long time since I played it last time.

I completely understand that feeling, I mean, me and a lot of my friends have had a moment when we needed to take a break from gaming, maybe because we were to burned out from work or because nothing felt interesting, and it happens. Our mind state also plays a role in that, I personally had a moment when I felt like I had no control over my life, and that feeling was hard to deal with, I literally just ate and slept. After some time I managed to find a game that would keep me invested, I got immersed and it helped me to take a break from reality and start to deal with these thing I needed to deal with. As of my friends, even the ones who at some point seemed like were “done” with gaming eventually circled back to it(playing with friends also help a lot, specially on dealing with the day to day stress). So all I can say to you is, give it time, it will get better and you’ll find a game that will make you want to play again.

@@00101001000000110011 I got epilepsy. That was something that slowed my progress... Switched to do gardening and it has been quite fun. I thought about slicing the day in half one for the sun and one for the hobbies. But I like just being and not doing much. Even if games have plot twists or such, it still feels like... Well try some Runescape. I cheer for the nutcases who can play it with extra challenges or self made setbacks. Years ago when I was a kid still I just realized that I'm not going to play it through when you just do the same thing billion times. It's basically more sophisticated cookie clicker. People were into fidget spinners too. Maybe some still use them as way to wind down. Also I've been bit of a loner anyways, I can do both, but not sure about being the host order anything.

4:10 Yeah, I'm played the game up to act 3 and sadly , as far i know it never came to play to me. Actually most of the missable content is tied to not long rest enough actually. BG3 is really good games, but it's made to be really accessible so they clearly didn't want to included timer for the main quest. If you want some good rpgs that play around with time in much meaningful way , try, or at least give a watch, Fallout 1 and Pathfinder Kingmaker. Both games have timer not only for the main quest but for most Side quests too. You can literaly game over the main story if you aren't careful.

Ohh yeah, around the third act I realized that, haha, and playing I knew it probably wasn’t the case, but I loved the feeling of immediacy that it gave me. I also could have searched online, but I liked being kept on my toes because of role play reasons, haha. As of the writing of the video I didn’t know if there was a timer tho, that’s why I made sure you guys watching were made aware that it was probably not the case, haha. Fallout 1 has a timer to get the water chip right? I’ve been meaning to give it a try, but I just installed a tone of mods for New Vegas, so probably play that one first, thank you for the recommendations!

@@Igones in fo1 you would have to abuse long rests (rest untill fully healed) to get close to time limit. few locations have quests that have time limit for their good/ bad ending tho

Hope you enjoyed it 😀 One of the cases is in Act 3, the journalist quest where you have to change the title of the newspaper in order for people in town not to hate you 😅 If you go to sleep after triggering the quest, the newspaper is immediately released with the bad title. I know there's a few more instances - the Owlbear which you can recruit to camp can also die if you enter the cave and long rest without dealing with the guys inside.

A way to reduce this time slavery is to have a save-everywhere feature in the game.

  • @Igones

Yeah, that convenience is really good, but I really think that some horror games thrive on the idea of possibility loosing you save, like the fear from the time before you get to a typewriter in Resident Evil
