I`ve used Nickel Strings on the 5th and 6th strings and bronze strings on the other strings on an acoutic. The pickup is similar concept and since Nickel are more magnetic than bronze the separation is even better in my opinion.

Sounds awesome. I like it. What about running a second parallel signal asside from your normal guitar 6 string pickup signal, and parallel yhe same signal (isolated) through an EQ that cuts out all your high(s), Boosts your bass, and introduces your favorite octive circuit/pedal, and run that signal back into/with or through your your original signal (pre amp). Wouldn't this do the same thing by boosting and enhancing only your low signal wih some funk without messing with your original signal from your first pickup signal? Or is it necessary to pull only from the signal from your bottom 2 strings? Would my suggestion be too muddy?

Thanks!, Yes, I have tried a similar approach and it does not sound as clean (Muddy) + it does not trigger the octave very well when you augment the signal that much. I think once polyphonic tracking gets better it will make doing things like this way easier :)

Thank you! Cool idea but there would be too much magnetic string pull with the pickup oriented horizontally, it will make those string vibrate in a odd way affecting tuning and intonation, thanks for checking out the vid!

Great arrangement of "Moon Dance", beautifully played. I love the way you have organized your workshop with everything so clean and beautifully laid out, which is the sign of a consummate professional. This is really cool. I use an eq pedal to tame the flabby bass of neck PAFs, but it isn't that great bc the tone is better with the bass, just not the woolliness -this is a very convincing fix! Nice one.

The trick is to setup your tone on the neck pickup and then switch to bridge and rolloff highs with the tone pot. 4 pot guitars like your average Gibson style wiring work great like that.

Very cool! Have you considered wiring in a capacitor to reduce harmonics further? Basically a hard-wired full on tone control. My theses is that reducing harmonics would ensure consistent tracking.

To make sure I understand, the two pickups are working in parallel, correct? New pickup is adding more bass clarity to preexisting pickup?

  • @WaylonMcPhersonGuitar

Thanks for the comment, the two pickups are working independently on separate audio paths. The Dual String Pickup goes through an Octave pedal (or in my case a subharmonic synth). So your guitar would need a separate output like a Stereo jack in place of the mono one which is a pretty easy to install, cheers!

Wow! Your guitar sounds are great! Great idea. It reminds me a bit of the Little Thunder V2 Octave Humbucker that was made for Billy Gibbons, ZZ Top, by the company A-Little-Thunder. I like to use octave pedals because of the wonderful sound effects that are possible. I really like your idea to create your own octave humbucker. Really interesting.

Yes, The Single coil noise affects tracking + winding the Bucker for a high DCR softens the top-end along with providing a healthy output :)

  • @bigbasil1908

Interesting. It seems to work well. Couldn't you just use one of those bass pickups meant for 2 strings like on the fender jazz bass where you have one pickup for 2 strings and another for the other 2 strings? It seems like a waste of space and coil wire to use full size pickups with 4 of the pole pieces missing.

I use this concept for a while now. The only thing I miss is an "inteligent" octave pedal where it would give output within a fixed octave. For instance if the input note is E2 than the octave pedal would give me E1 but if the input note is E3 or F3 or G3 than the octave pedal would also give me E1, F1 and G3. Perfect for me would be a fixed output of D1 to C#2. I think you get the idea. If anyone knows the pedal that gives this solution then tell me right away! :)

It's not really what you want, but perhaps worth highlighting in any case: The Boss OC-3 has a "Poly" mode that changes what is otherwise the 2nd octave level knob to be a note range knob that can restrict the octave effect to only a low range of notes. It sort of fudges what Waylon is doing with the 2-string pickup, but restricting the octave effect to a note range rather than to particular strings. You could approximate Waylon's setup by having a splitter box or Y cable send a normal pickup's output to two paths, one of them going to the OC-3 in Poly mode with the direct level down and the range set to a low value, and the other going to whatever your normal signal path would be. Then you mix the two paths together. -Tom

@@TLMuse If i understood it would be 5th string one pedal 2 octaves down and 6th string other pedal 1 octave down right?

  • @TLMuse

    @TLMuse

    5 ай бұрын

@@gtrdrumsplayerduarte No. If you use the OC-3 in Poly mode, you get to control the levels of the direct sound and the 1-octave-down sound, and what would otherwise be the 2-octave-down level now controls what range of notes get the 1-octave-down treatment. The pedal has no way of knowing what strings you are playing; it works on note range. I haven't used Poly mode much, but as I recall, it sort of gently cuts off. So, for example, with a particular setting of the range knob, notes from low E to low A would come out about full level in the 1-octave-down signal, and higher notes than low A come out at quickly decreasing levels (so maybe by the time you hit low C or low D they are inaudible). Maybe you can try looking for KZread demos of the OC-3 to learn more.

Thanks for checking this out, If you are looping bass lines then you don't really need this pickup. The Dual String Pickup is about adding Low-End Presence in realtime so I don't think it would offer much advantage in a pure looping scenario , cheers!

@@WaylonMcPhersonGuitar I might not have been clear. I loop with an RC505 that has a built in 'Guitar to Bass' pitch shifter. It's really handy for ideas but the tracking is a bit warbley unless it gets a very clean uneffected signal in a certain range. So I mostly just have a bass as well. I have an electric with a piezo bridge that gives a close to acoustic sound and I wondered whether this might make it the Swiss Army knife.
