We used some of the licensed original balls in our regional youth league in Germany. Back in the days I was Goalie in our team and I fucking despised that ball man... Slippery as fuck in rain, fluttering when putting some force behind it and it was TOO FUCKING FAST. Combine all of those aspects into one game and you have the ultimate impossible game when being Goalie... Damn those were times....

@bbv it moves completely different because of the groove patterns on it it was made illegal to play with in a lot of different leagues think you should do your research chum

Had one of these balls back when i was in 5th-6th grade. Practiced like crazy with it i felt like i was a good striker. When the time came to try out for the school team, they used Nike balls, couldn't even get em off the ground and I couldn't even make the team.

The thing is sphere flows trough air unpredictable, cause as it moves trough air, air behind it is moving wildly causing it to change directions. You could predict somewhat how it moves by putting spin on it(magnus effect) with spin you control how air pressure around the ball is distributed that is how tennis is played by controlin ball hitting a top spin slice or flat. Players were thinking that something is wrong the ball while it was quite opposite it was too much a sphere(no canals for air)

I did my senior seminar project on Magnus effect in college. If you want the Jabulani ball to knuckle, you can't have any spin on it. If you look at any of the videos of the ball knuckling, it's not spinning at all. This happens when the air over the ball transitions from laminar to turbulent flow, creating drag. The drag is not evenly spaced due to the weird paneling design of the ball. The Magnus effect is lift generated by a rotating body. So if you kick a ball with spin, the ball will curve in the direction of that spin.

It's perfectly round before and AFTER you've kicked through it. It's the slight wobble in its form that adds the extra Jabulani effect.

At school we have these big connect 4 sets and the counters are the best alternative footballs. You can only play on the ground but you can do skills on them and it's a very fun experience.

Since jabulani uses 8 panels, it increases the critical velocity. If a player kicks a ball at intial velocity of 30 m/s, the jabulani ball will slow down until it reaches that critical velocity. Compared to other ball (which have lower critical velocity), it will take longer time for other ball to slow down to its critical velocity

Like swing bowling in cricket when the seam, angled slightly, causes turbulent flow on one side of the ball leading to a later boundary layer separation on that side, which causes lower pressure on that side of the ball, which causes the ball to swing. The same thing happens on modern football which have fewer seams than the old 32 panel balls. But as the ball rotates slightly in the air the seam on the other side of the ball comes into play, or a seam on the top or the bottom of the ball comes into play. This is why the ball can swing one way then swing back the other way. Or violently dip or violently rise seemingly randomly.
