@TacticalMoonstone At least they didn't do the same for the Suicide Forest. Imagine the rides!
Volcanoes do often have a ring of extremely fertile soil around them, so it's actually not that uncommon for settlements to spring up nearby.
As soon as I clicked on the video, I realized exactly what it was going to be about. I've actually *been* to Plymouth-- back before it was destroyed, of course. My parents used to have a vacation house on Montserrat, and I spent quite a bit of time on the island throughout my childhood. I was 9 years old when the volcano first erupted, and my parents were forced to sell the house; it wasn't in the exclusion zone, but it was close enough to the boundary that proper upkeep of the place was impossible. I still miss that island. My childhood memories of it were that it was a lush green paradise full of really sweet, kind, welcoming people, and I loved visiting. I haven't been back since, and even if I did, I'm not sure if it will ever be quite the same as it was when I knew it. It breaks my heart to see places I went as a kid now looking like the surface of the moon. :( As much as I mourn my own loss, though, I feel really bad for the islanders. Before the volcano erupted, the island was hit very hard by Hurricane Hugo in 1989. The island was *just* beginning to recover when the volcano woke up.

„Places I went to as a kid now looking like the surface of the moon” … did your parents own property in many more similar locations?
@chevand8
3 ай бұрын
@@michaelwisniewski6047 No, they owned the one vacation home. When I said 'places' (plural), I meant there are a bunch of specific places on the island that I remember visiting, and they've all since been destroyed or buried in ash. I have fond memories of the market, the war memorial, the sugar mills, the hotel next door that used to have a steelpan band playing each night. I've seen photos of how Plymouth looks now, and they're really difficult for me to look at.
