It astounds me that Canon never did a C100 Mark III. They nailed the design and ergonomics right out the gate for the C line.

They've decided to change the approach and the C70 was born. Although it didn't have the same modularity, since they've decided to go to a unibody design, the C70 checks almost every mark that the C100 line up did, but in a modern way.

This just proves that camera bodies become obsolete with each generation, whereas quality glass retains much more value and years of usage. In this industry the rule to live by is: “Date the bodies….Marry the lenses”

@@ireinbv5309 you must be talking about Canon with the RF mount. Nikon has had the same mount since the 1950’s and Sony E-mount works for everything Sony. Not to mention the fact that if I love a piece of glass that much, I’ll get an adapter so that I can still use my old glass on your new mount. However, what I can’t get around is old technology that obsolete (poor ISO, Poor Autofocus, 8 bit color). As a full time professional in this business, it’s all about making profit. Since 2017 when I started One lens (24-70 F/2.8) that I paid $2300 has paid for itself to the tune of hundreds of thousands. Now ask me how many times I’ve changed camera bodies since 2017?

@@itsapinecone7280 -Yes, I agree you can use outdated technology if you want no one is stopping you from doing that. But if you do corporate work (like I do) you have clients who have requirements of 4K or 6 K resolution and specific codecs that the files need to be recorded in. If you’re a hobbyist and want to pull manual focus and want to push your ISO to the point of breaking apart, that’s your prerogative. I know for a fact that my lenses are far superior investments than my camera bodies are and last me a lot longer. Not only that try selling a 15 year old 24-70 F/2.8 and try selling a Canon C-100 Cinema camera and see which one will make you back 35-40 percent of what you originally paid for it. People who do this professionally (not hobbyist or amateurs) know that the value is on the glass, not the camera bodies. I’ve sold lenses and made 50 percent of what I paid on some lenses. I’ve sold camera bodies and took home 20-25 percent of what I paid for them.

From my shooting experience with various classes of hand-holdable video cameras I can confidently say the Canon C100 especially the Mk2 version records the best 24-28 Megabit 8-bit 4:2:0 1080p image among virtually everything out there in the market even today. Yes, you got to nail the settings exactly right due to the heavy compressed nature of the H.264 files but the rewards are so impressive. Hassle free workflow, storage space is minimal, editing is a breeze by even the cheapest of computers. IQ-wise, beautiful color rendition, great tonal gradation from the shadow to highlight areas, great resolution (close to the theoretical 1080 lines of vertical resolution with professional grade cine or still photo lenses), good light sensitivity and even the grain at the higher ISOs looks pretty beautiful. Great camera for today's money of $500 no doubt.

Question: Do you have any tricks to make an image appear sharp without being bitey? I keep struggling with this in my own work. I play around with a still frame, and of course the more sharp it is, the better it looks. (within reason) However, once I then play the video, it seems like I have to back off that point by quite a bit. I guess this makes sense, but I always struggle with finding the right balance between sharp but not bitey.

I always wanted to get one and will probably get it at the right price. At the moment I’m playing with a Blackmagic camera that was released about a year after c100: the Production 4K. I find it to be almost exact opposite of this camera. The body is a bit awkward and minimalist in features but the codecs could not be more robust. Any flavour of ProRes in 4K or 1080p or CinemaDNG RAW in 4000x2160. It has some quirks like the “black hole sun” and a useless built in battery but the image over all is to my eye stunning. I wonder what you would make of it.

What a timely question, next week’s review is on the GH5 actually! I know this is a really annoying answer but it depends on what you are going to use it for. If you’re shooting documentary and need the simplest setup possible then the C100 is hard to beat. If you want stronger resolution and codec selection and portability, it’s the GH5. If I had to start fresh right now I would probably do a C100, but that’s super specific to the kind of work I do (KZread, doc, etc)

I used the C100 for a short film a few months, and the image quality is just not there for me. Just to name a few gripes I had with it: 1- The evf is subpar. 2- The lcd screen is hard to see in broad daylight. 3- The files are not flexible and break apart if you want to do anything more than just a simple grade. 4- The image is soft. Too soft, in fact. Sharpening the footage ends up looking crunchy if you don’t get it right. I’d pick up a GH5 for around the same price and have a more flexible camera that will look goof for years to come. The C100 had its place, but it’s long been superseded by better, more practical cameras.

@@jakehayden998 I used a Rokinon/Samyang set of f/1.4s, the Sigma 18-35mm f/1.8 and the Canon 24-105mm f/4 MKII. I know the Rokinons aren’t the sharpest of the bunch, but I was shooting stopped down (mainly for focus accuracy) and it still was quite soft. The only lens that I enjoyed was the 24-105mm because it had IS and it worked pretty well for some of the handheld shots we did.

The EVF was panned on it's original launch, so has always been considered as rubbish.

Your title says 500$, yet the link you provide has a price tag of 3,499$...😮 Edit: I see the mistake now, your video is about the C100 but your link takes us to the C200.

@@MeetupvideoUK yeah, to be fair 4k is already good enough but canon likes to do downsampling resolution so… Even EOS R7 has 4k fine (downscaling from 8k)
