Why There Is No Plane Like the A-10 Warthog?

The A-10 Thunderbolt II, affectionately known as the Warthog, is exceptional. It has earned its reputation as a formidable support aircraft. The A-10 is built to withstand more damage than any other frame. Its pilot is surrounded by multiple titanium- armor plates, allowing it to endure small-arms fire and continue flying its attack missions.

    Don't forget...it also has self sealing layer around the gas tank. It a round goes through the metal, there's a layer of liquid rubber that comes out the hole and immediately hardens and seals the hole up, so no fuel is lost while taking fire. Awesome concept. Never even would have thought of adding that for protection. Edit : Ok to the folks that's not getting it. Some people don't know these things so I pointed them out bc I just learned it. In no way mean this in a hostile way, genuinely curious - haven't self-sealing fuel tanks been a thing since WWII, if not before? iirc that was even part of how some Japanese fighters performed so well in dogfights - they didn't have any real safety measures, while most American fighters had self-sealing tanks and added armor in critical areas by the real meat of the conflict. (that was found out after one was captured) I would assume that this isn't inherently new for the A-10, though I do assume the tanks are probably armored more, or better prepared to seal a big leak, with the understanding it would be under more fire from the ground.

When one of us, who was Mars, went to The United States of America, he heard a Fighter Jet coming his way. Once he saw it, the Fighter Jet was the A-10 Thunderbolt II. So, he quickly got out his phone to record it, and got a great scene out of it. He then sent it to the rest of us, and we were rather impressed by this. We reckon that we had never seen something like this. So, well done on the Shorts Video. You've highlighted one of our favourite Fighter Jets, and we can't wait to see more from you. A-10 can’t operate well enough in certain environments, while Russian attacker, despite its range limitations and less payload than USAs’, is good enough for operating almost everywhere with a flat surface. @@TysiekFox A battalion? Do you know anything about the military and how it works? Statistics say that the A-10 has a friendly fire problem, but that’s not true. When you’re doing air to ground, it’s very hard to tell who is who so friendly fire will happen. The A-10 is the most used Attack aircraft and is pretty much the only one that the US has. So of course the more it’s used, the more that rate will go up. This isn’t just for the A-10 but for every other attack aircraft fighter in the world. Now let’s talk about how the Russian’s keep shooting each other down. That’s actual inaccuracy and is something that’s worse than the A-10 problem. I also don’t think you know what a battalion is. The A-10 is good, but there’s no way that it can take out an entire battalion friendly or not unless it’s just general stupidity. Also, over the course of 5 years, the A-10 has only killed 35 civilians and less than 50 friendlies which is more than 19 times less than the size of a battalion. Now let’s talk about how much better the A-10 is compared to the Su-25. The A-10 has only been shot down 6 times while the Su-25 has been shot down at least 38 times but that number is most likely higher. It’s also 6 times more than the A-10. It’s also likely that 5,000-25,000 Russians have been killed by friendlies. America will always be better than Russia. Russia will soon fall and all of them will become either American or a new nation. We aren’t scared of their nukes seeing that most of them are too weak to actually do damage.

    Really wish more people understood this. Yes, the gun goes brrt. It's neat. But it was a fundamentally flawed concept to begin with, in all reality. If you are considering peer to peer warfare, not dunking on a barely funded military in the desert, you can't fly a hot brick that is visible to every missile in a 500 mile radius. Can you imagine the A-10 taking on russia, or another developed military? The vision was for the A-10 to run the lines, like it was trench warfare again... But SAM sites exist, much less manpads. Nowadays, that's even more clear. War without clear air superiority and ground threats cleared makes the A-10 more or less a sitting duck...

  • @LucyJrts

    @@Ryzard I mean yeah, the A-10 was designed for the kinds of wars the US were ACTUALLY fighting... not the ones Wargame Red Dragon players like to froth about... The F-22 was designed for that peer warfare scenario... and what's it actually done? On the other hand though, the idea was for the A-10 to aid lightly equipped infantry in the CAS role... lightly equipped infantry don't go up against the kinds of units that HAVE significant SAM protection in the first place, and if it's a battalion equipped with a few SA-8s and Shilkas for air defence... not really much of a problem for an A-10. Lob a couple Mavericks from outside SAM range and then move in once the threat is gone to aid the troops on the ground going up against BMPs and BTRs...

  • @Ryzard

    @Ryzard

    2 ай бұрын

    @@LucyJrts that is not true. The A-10 was designed for a war with the Soviet Union - specifically to bust Soviet tanks and tank lines - which is SPECIFICALLY WHAT PEOPLE WARGAME - and something that never happened. The F-22 also hasn't seen conflict because we've generally been smart enough to avoid conflict with other nations that have that level of capabilities. Also, the idea that lightly equipped infantry don't have to go up against people with manpads or anti air emplacements is just... Incorrect. Ukraine is a good example, and that isn't even peer to peer. As I have said a lot, the A-10 is exclusively useful in situations where you have complete air superiority, generally complete ground superiority, and can ensure a lack of air defenses. Even then, it's slow and vulnerable to most ground fire, even from unconventional means. - With your scenario, other jets even in service right now can carry similar or more munitions, with faster speeds, better performance and flight characteristics or stealth, better tech in the cockpit, and less risk. They also are less risk to civilians and friendly troops. That cannon was designed to pop Soviet MBTs, and it's never been consistently good at that - so they widened the range of what was considered a tank. Most kills come from the rockets/bombs/missiles the A-10 can carry, which again, other jets can do that without sucking at being jets. This thing is half a century old - and it shows. It isn't fast, it isn't stealthy, and it isn't particularly good at its job - and it's getting expensive to maintain and update with the times. Yes, it's cool as hell, I love it to bits, but... That doesn't mean it justifies longer service life. - Final note - with the f-22 - what has it done? What does it need to do? The fact that we haven't needed (that we know of) much from the f-22 is a good thing, to be honest. But it's better to design a good plane that isn't needed, rather than an inadequate plane that is unprepared for the conflict it enters.

    @@Ryzard I’m going to address your points one at a time, and please let me preface that by saying that I too believe the A-10 should’ve been retired a decade ago and I’m glad it’s finally getting retired now. The A-10 may have been envisioned as a tank-buster back in the late 60s when Alexander Kartveli designed it, mainly based on the success of the Israeli Mirage’s 30mm guns popping Egyptian and Syrian tanks in 1967, but by the time the A-10 was actually being built, the USAF already knew it was never going to be able to DO that against newer T-72s and T-80s. Tank-busting was only ever PART of its envisioned role though - an added bonus thrown in to sweeten the deal for prospective buyers, so it didn’t matter that it wasn’t actually going to turn out that way. The main role the A-10 was always designed for was CAS - it was to be a modern day A-1 Skyraider (the A-1 was still being used by the USAF when the A-10 first flew). CAS doesn’t mean engaging convoys of tanks and other vehicles rolling down highways (that was the F-111’s job)… it means engaging emplaced infantry, machine gun nests, RPG and ATGM teams, maybe a few BMPs or BTRs and MTLBs, PT-76s etc., things the A-10 and it’s 30mm gun are very, VERY good at! In the rare case that you DID have to engage main battle tanks in the A-10, you use your Mavericks to do it. That was very much what it was designed to do - it’s a common misconception that the A-10 was solely built as a gun plane and bombs and missiles were added on as an afterthought because the gun couldn’t get the job done. That line of thinking was thanks to idiots like James Burton and Pierre Sprey, in actuality the A-10 was designed from the off to carry large amounts of ordnance, and to USE its ordnance primarily for its role. The F-22 has not seen combat (unless you count balloons and scaring a couple Iranian F-4s) because it was designed for a war the US never had to fight, yes. That’s exactly my point. The A-10 was designed for the conflicts we were ACTUALLY getting into. No point having a fast supercar if the job you’re actually gonna be doing day to day is hauling cargo… The F-22 is an amazing jet, and it’s flashy and cool and the most capable thing in the skies… but the A-10 in a conflict like Iraq or Afghanistan was substantially more practical. Lightly equipped infantry obviously have to go up against enemy forces equipped MANPADS and other company-level air defences - Strelas and Shilkas mainly, a few SA-8s or even SA-19s in the worst case scenario, and sometimes it’s literally just a couple of ZU-23 positions and KPV machine guns… but the A-10 can easily handle ALL of those threats. SA-8 and SA-19 top out at about 8km range, Strela and Shilka more like 4 to 5, MANPADS more like 2.5 to 3, and the ZU-23 is barely effective at more than 2km. A-10 can drop guided bombs or launch Mavericks from 15km away. What I meant in my original comment by “significant SAM protection” is the likes of the S-300, the Buk or Kub, stuff like that. Those are division/regiment-level air defences. They protect strategic sites like cities, command posts, repair facilities, transport hubs etc… motorised or mechanised infantry battalions do not have those systems, so the A-10 doesn’t have to worry about them when supporting ground troops AGAINST those kinds of units, which is what it’s main role is. Incidentally… counter-terrorist/counter-insurgency operations don’t generally involve you going up against anything more dangerous than a Strela/Shilka combo AT ALL - those kinds of forces aren’t equipped with significant anti-air systems. Yes other aircraft can carry all the same stuff the A-10 can, and often just as much of it, while being faster and more generally capable... But those platforms are also more expensive to procure, more expensive to operate, have less loiter time, AND can only operate from full airbases with significant ground support. The A-10 can take off from a dirt road in the middle of nowhere, and it can do so much quicker than an F-16 or F-15E can, let alone the F-111. You’d be surprised how long it takes to start up a fighter jet… the A-10 can do it in a fifth the time! It’s also much more heavily protected than those other platforms in the event that it DOES get hit by a MANPADS or raked by a 23mm cannon, with triple-redundant flight controls and titanium armor around its most important areas. Those are much more important criteria for a CAS platform than high top speed… It’s another common misconception that compared to other aircraft, the A-10 had very little technology in the cockpit. That’s rubbish. In fact it was significantly better as far as targeting systems go than most other aircraft of its time, if not at least equal. It was only in the late 90s that it was superseded in that regard, with the introduction of things like LANTIRN and LITENING. Its unfortunate legacy of blue-on-blue incidents is just a factor of CAS aircraft in general. The Phantom, Jaguar, Su-25, the Su-34, the Harrier… they all do it. The A-10 has done it more because the A-10 was USED more. The problem is that the A-10C upgrade removed the best PART of the A-10 - it’s low cost and simplicity. Meanwhile, CFTs allow F-16Cs to loiter for just as long as the A-10 can while carrying almost the same amount of ordnance. On the flipside, company-level air defence doesn’t mean simple Strelas and Shilkas these days… it means Tors, HQ-17s and Pantsirs. Older MANPADS replaced by Verbas and such. Things the A-10 just cannot deal with. Hence why the A-10 should’ve been retired ten years ago.

    The Warthog would be great plane to turn into a drone. It has great weapons for close ground assault and can be armed for air defence. With a upgraded radar for air support it would be a perfect drone for todays environment and wouldn’t take long to teach people how to operate

    Its bathtub is too heavy, not removing it would be expensive for a drone, removing it would result in a heavy gravitational center shifting, so it is one of the worst planes for drone making, and it is hella expensive.

    It would be significantly easier and better to just design a drone from the ground up, tbh. The entire plane is designed around the cockpit, and human limits/safety, etc. With a drone, you can redesign so much of the thing it'd be unrecognizable - not to mention that the A-10 is over half a century old. It's slow, heavy, and it can't really pull or carry what it needs to in modern warfare. Renovating it while keeping all the flaws would unfortunately just be inefficient.

    @@Ryzard ok I agree it would be better to build new drones. I think they could use a lot of the Warthog abilities with upgrades from today’s technology for the base. Ukraine needs planes / drones to help their air defence plus have the capability to help the troops on the front line. Designing a drone based on the A10 could fit that need
