Why the Thunder are ignoring Dallas' shooters (!)

    Some of you mentioned that the role players can't shoot: I cut this for time, but the interesting thing is the role players all have solid percentages! DJJ is 33% from the corner in his career. (Just 30% Above the break) PJ Washington is 35% in his career. Josh Green is 38% in his career. But outside of Hardaway Jr., these other 3 players (especially DJJ and Green) are far more SELECTIVE as shooters, so their percentages are "curated" because of lower volume. Part of the gambit is inviting them to shoot at volume, instead of attacking closeouts or rotating so they pass to better shooters.

    33% & 35% are not solid. Something like Greene's 38% is. 36.6% is the nba average this year. Those look even worse when converting EFG%. (50% & 53%). League average EFG% this year was 54.7%. I generally think ideal is 39%+ this will be on par with league average TS%. A value proposition you'd feel less inclined allow if you're an opposing defense. Over the course of a series. Giving up 3pt shots to Washington & Jones should net you substantially better odds of winning. Versus, letting Luka & Kyrie carve up your defense & allowing easy high percentage looks to Lively/Gafford. That big man pair average 20 ppg on like 75%TS . Denying such looks is arguably a better choice, if it means giving up a 3pt shot to Green. Even if I'd maybe prefer to see those contested. Edit: OKC has very likely has definitely done a proper risk management analysis in this regard. As PJ Washington & Jones Jr open 3pt%'s aren't better than 35-36%. Best to live with such variance than to give up easy pick and roll dunks, putbacks, foul shots.

    Minnesota did the same thing except they left good shooters open because they all have rockets up their ass. So they have five guys around Jokic and by the time the pass arrives a defender is getting there when the ball does so there's no shot. I'm still half convinced they were on drugs. I've never seen a team play that hard for that long and they just didn't seem to get tired. An absolutely insane defensive performance. It was like having five Dennis Rodman's on the court.

    I love how you always points out the holes in every strategy in your videos, both defense and offense. You always acknowledge that no defense and offense is perfect. There's no surefire way to win against every team every time. Every strategy is about compromises and concessions. Great game plans are about who concedes less, who played more to their strengths, who capitalized more on their opponent's weaknesses. It's always about "less and more", and not "none and all". Even the best offence is going to get stopped some time, and even the best defence is bound to have a hole. I think a lot of basketball fans missed this point, and you have some great quality content to remind them.

    playoffs are about finding a little edge to get one game...then you have to go back to the drawing board. As a mavs fan, I hate J Kidd's in game adjustments - they're non-existent...Game to Game though, he's been very good. I think OKC has more depth and better coaching, but Luka and Kyrie can win you at least two games just by sheer will. Overall, I think the Thunder win this in 6 because Luka is absolutely dogshit from 3pt this postseason. That knee is clearly a huge problem for him.

  • @t4d0W

    @t4d0W

    Its not just compromises but also consistency. Someone noted the Wolves played game 2 like there were five Dennis Rodmans around Jokic. I'm not surprised if the Wolves can't match that same defensive intensity in games 3 and 4. Especially when the Nuggets are healthy have the playmaking and shooting to figure out aggressive style defenses with athletes like the Wolves in the middle of the series. Also doesn't help the Wolves outside of nice shooting in game 1 don't really have a consistent bucket getting threat outside of Edwards. In the case of the Thunder/Mavs series, even if the Mavs have streaky shooters they still have the constant threat of Luka being a walking bucket in big playoff games down the stretch. Whereas the Thunder only have SGA. Even on an 'efficient' shooting night the rest of the Thunder players aren't threats to go off like Kyrie or PJ Washington on his hot streak atm.

The Mavs are at their best when they get to the paint, if you take that away and make them only shoot 3s there’s a much higher chance they miss that shot compared to a 5 foot pull up or layup. It would take a monster game from the role players hitting 3s for the Mavs offense to make OKC change game plans. Maybe it happens a couple games but it won’t be a common occurrence lol

    1:58 why isn’t PJ Washington making. a sneak cut alongside the baseline when SGA fully commits with a lunge towards the ball? It’s not just the dared to shoot thing it’s the fact that they stay stationary making it was easier to guard. 2:59 Josh Green can flare screen Kyrie as his man is pulled in and would be in a long closeout scenario provided Green sets a solid pick before slipping to the hoop.

    I was thinking the same thing especially if DJJ is cutting he has stupid bounce. Also I think they shouldn’t just settle for the 3 they should drive in when they have the ball. I think that would cause chaos because everyone would be focus on the drive that luka could slip back out to the 3 and be wide open. I’m no head coach but I think it could work.
