Why the Sony a6700 is so hard to beat

Фильм және анимация

The Sony a6700 is one of the strongest options available right now for content creators and filmmakers alike who are wanting to invest less than $1500. I'm really impressed by this camera in almost every area. But what is the a6700's image quality like? How is the autofocus and IBIS? What kind of IO does it have? How is the color science. We'll talk about al of it, so sit back and relax. Thanks so much for watching, I appreciate it.

    Great review. I appreciate the tips on the picture profile. I got this camera a couple month ago and I absolutely love it. The eye-tracking autofocus is incredible, and yes it works well on animals too! The one thing I will say is that I did have some overheating issues even on 4K 60fps. But, that was when shooting for 20+ minutes in a single recording.

    Obviously, that is a completely personal choice, based on weighing many details. I like to carry less weight, because then I will keep hiking longer, if my back is not hurting. For someone who shoots in a studio, this would be irrelevant... Then there's venues - some will stop you from shooting or ask you to leave with a full frame camera, while the "hobby" camera (little do they know) can go in and be used, since it doesn't look "pro"

    I've owned this camera since release date! Ran into overheating issues only a few times when shooting 4K in direct sun light. This can be resolved with the Ulanzi fan! This is the only camera that I know of that lets you "Bake In" LUTs. Meaning not just let you preview it but actually records using that LUT. Also amazing is that you can output LOG footage with the LUT to live stream!

    Hey there, I'm in the lookout for my first mirrorless camera. Right now, I'm really leaning towards the a6500 (used/refurbished for 400-500€). While I'd prefer to stick with Sony for E-mount, it's not a deal-breaker if I can't. My focus is about 60% on video and 40% on photography. Good software and mobile support are important to me (using iPad as external monitor, streaming without capture card etc.), and I'd love it if the camera can shoot videos in 4K or higher. My budget is around 400-500€, whether it's new, refurbished, or used. I'm also fine with waiting for new releases as my camera purchase is planned around summer. Any advice or recommendations would be awesome and i hope you can help me out! 👊🏻

    Was thinking about saving my pennies for either the a6700,a7iii or a7iv and all make really good points as to why they'd suit my needs. For simplicity and portability im tempted to go apsc whilst also retaining premium features and 4.2.2 for video. The a7iv is (at the moment) prohibitively expensive and i feel as a more thorough foray into hybrid shooting the 6700 would make more sense as the lens selection is cheaper and vast.

    honestly it's really nice that we live in an era where APS-C cameras are soooo good now. Pretty much every brand has a decent enough option, and a few have really top tier cameras. I'm especially thinking about Sony, Canon and Fuji. All 3 have a camera that is fitting that mid range pricepoint and they're all offering really good cameras there. I think I don't need to add anything on how the Sony A6700 is a great camera, this video pretty much sums it up. But if I'm honest, if it's a really good camera for video production, it isn't the best in its class for photography, being beaten on burst rates or resolution or both by the competitors. It might be the best balanced body though. The Fuji X-S20 is basically the same camera with a few differences. The size is the same (or really close), the camera is a little cheaper (100 bucks cheaper) and they share a really similar sensor base (both use the Sony IMX571). The two big differences will be that for photography the X-S20 will bea ble to shoot 20fps while the 6700 is limited at 11, and that in video it trades the cropped 4K120 for an open gate 3:2 6K30 video. F-Log 2 is around the same as S-Log 3 when it comes to dynamic range and autofocus in video is close, although Fuji does not have touch to track (yet, it's been announced that it would come through firmware). On the lens' fron Fujifilm probably has the biggest selection of APS-C glass, both 1st and 3rd party. The X mount is basically as old as the E-mount at this point and both have really strong ens lineups. It's also sorth noting that You can add an external fan to it if you really want to turn it into a video beast. The Canon EOS R7 is a little more expensive (100 bucks more) than the A6700 and would be *overall* a better camera, having a 32MP sensor, the ability to shoot up to 30fps stills and having a slightly bigger and more rugged body with dual card slots and more controls. Autofocus wise it's also very good, at least as good as the other ones. It does have 4K60, but the rolling shutter is more present than in both the X-S20 and A6700 and here there's no 4K120 nor 6K30 open gate. It's the weakest video offering of the 3, but considerinfg the photography specs it's still putting up a good fight as probably the most versatile camera out of the 3. Biggest problem? The lenses. You'll probably have to get an EF adapter and use DSLR glass on this one since the RF-S lens lineup is so weak and the RF full frame glass is just too expensive in general

  • @anonymousl5150

    @anonymousl5150

    Canon full frame lenses are very overpriced and apsc there's not enough options. Fuji also overpriced, there are so many old lenses that don't meet the modern standards still priced crazy for retail and you have to get them used. Anything between 18 and 90 mm is fine on Fuji, the 50-140 telephoto is great, but everything else is a weak spot optically, although 3rd parties have started producing decent ultrawides and telephotos. Sony gets most of the same 3rd parties in addition to everything else including full frame lenses. Why use sony full frame on apsc body? Because you cut the weakest corners of a lens on apsc and it's still a useful pixel density equivalent of a 60 megapixel full frame, highly useful for telephoto situations. Most importantly, the autofocus is simply far superior to Fuji which is easily the worst out of all the main camera brands for video.

    @@harry54ck I do not have a problem, for night shots, not even on my15 Year old early mirrorless Sony, long before the 6000 series started. or even the RX100v - I got such good night shots with that. I should mention I only buy prime lenses, waiting for the sony version of the Viltrox 27mm F1.2. Using my legs to "zoom" gives me so many more pictures, than an actual zoom lens, for landscapes... For my A7IV, I had the 24mm GM - a fantastic lens, but after a few days, I decided I didn't want to carry so much bulk and weight, since I was satisfied with the shots of the R100V. for just fotos, I would have stuck to that. But for video, the RX100 is a bit annoying. Just not enough capability. There was a video stating, that Sony made a mistake, making the A6700 too good. I can't say if that is true,and for whom, but I don't see why I'd buy another one. Its got 10 Bit 422.every thing I wanted. There's even even a Tilta cooling fan for those who do long-format videos...

    I owned an A6300 and sold it to give Fuji a go and mainly for photo. I regret the sell... :( I also mainly shoot Nikon's high resolution models and had a D810, and now a Z7II. I was very happy with the A6300 for an every day camera even compared to them. It was incredibly compact, it felt sharp, was fast, colors were nice out of camera if I didn't want to edit, etc. I regret selling it as I didn't like the Fuji X-E3 and felt it's auto focus was nowhere near the A6300 in terms of accuracy. Most AF systems are fast these days, but the Fuji felt like it had a nack for missing just barely, to the point I was bugged when I saw a sharp copy of a photo, next to an unsharp copy of the same photo, half a second later. My Z7II isn't great at AF either, but the ZF is amazing and the A6300 was great too. I now only own my Z7II and my ZF, and those are the two I'll have for a very very long time, but there is a timeline where I went E mount instead with something from the A7R line, kept my A6300, and I am sure I would happy as well.

    What´s your opinion on the a6700 compared to a (cheaper) fujifilm x-s10?

  • @billyoung9538
    @billyoung95384 ай бұрын

    My only issues with the A6700 over the FX30 are: 1. Micro HDMI for an external monitor, meaning that port is going to need to be caged and the cable locked down or there is a high probability the port break at some point. 2. As far as I can tell there isn't a external video RAW solution. While some may note care about this, I'm a fan of the additional flexibility of most RAW formats.

    I've got the A7CR and the A7CII but also many Canon RF cameras, the autofocus is "THE SAME" on all these cameras. There isn't really a "best in class" anymore. Eye autofocus is excelent on all. Also on the Canon it can swtich from human to something else without you needing to switch settings or stop recording. Also the screens are trash on the SONY cameras. At the same pricepoint an R8 which is great for video comes with full frame and has a decent screen (at least compared to SONY screens) and amazing EVF for photography. SONY is amazing if you try to be as compact as possible, especially for these rangefinder style bodies. The body design is also great and very fashionable (especially in silver). But you can't go wrong with any maker, sony or canon or even nikon (the z30) or Fuji. They are all very good right now. It just depends on preference and style. Brand is no longer so relevant.

    It's a good camera, unfortunately it doesn't even come close to others like the XS20 or the FX30. Not the image quality, not the codecs, not the build quality, not the colors, not the ergonomics, not the EVF, not the dynamic range, not the resolutions, not the frame-rates, not the IBIS, not the overheating performance,... The only thing it might do better is the autofocus. It's a good camera, but there are technically, spec wise, build quality wise, price wise better options out there. It's very easy to beat on the contrary, whether you want to start your content creation journey or you need a B or C camera, I would recommend the FX30 or the XS20 instead of this one.

    Depends. For photo only u will get better af and more dynamic range, I think burst mode is similar or slightly better for sports/wildlife. For video much better, u get up to 120fps in 4k and 10 bit and better dynamic range, af, also ibis and better lowlight. I had the a6400 and have a6700. A6400 is a great cam. I don’t think u will notice huge difference on photo side but would notice more of a difference for video side. For most people u will never need anything more that a6400. For pro/prosumer it makes more sense.

    This camera is better or that camera is better, really? It’s like arguing one car is better than another and no one is ever going to agree. One thing for sure is that 99.99% of folks won’t be able to tell the difference from one camera photo to another.

  • @iamwillshepherd

    While you are right, the people buying them will be able to tell the difference. A camera isn’t all about the image. How a tool feels in hand and the experience you have while using it are just as important. To be clear, I’m not talking about the perspective of the folks who only consume the image, I’m speaking exclusively about the people who produce the image. Yes, all CMOS sensors are essentially the same, but packaging matters and to reduce a camera down to only the photo it produces is intellectually lazy. Taking that line of thinking to the extreme, why have any variations of things at all? 🤔
