The Prohen is a great overall EDC knife. Used this knife for camping, fishing, cooking, etc. Good grip, fits in the pocket well. Pull it out, use it and put it back. One hand operation can't be beat.

@@acid6urns X5s are pricey, going for about $200+ now, and that's for a non-auto flipper. Great looking, sturdy, American made knives, but Hogue doesn't use ball bearings in them. Not sure they're still in production. I've never been interested in SOG knives, but that Prohen looks like a winner.

It’s my favorite pocket knife. Probably a little late in the game for a review since there are a gazillion of them out there. Looking forward to the release of the Bodacious too. Maybe Spyderco can send you one? 😀 I do like the SOG too and it does look like a shark…or even a bull charging,..ha! Great video. 😎

Nice, tight review of the SOG prohen folder. Given the price and it being a tactical/self-defense blade I'm okay with D2 steel because with this type of knife its piercing ability is more important than slicing. There is a bit of cool factor to the design. It actually would pair nicely with a S&W Equalizer as a self-defense combo. Biggest question is how sturdy is the lock?

  • @Muscovy7

One thing I appreciate from your channel is you actually field test your gear. Most “knife reviewers” carry their knives for a week, maybe cut a few things, and give their thoughts on a tabletop. There isn’t anything necessarily wrong with this, and I understand with some like Metal Complex who have so many knives to review it’s hard to do a full field test on all of them. It just ain’t the same as real world testing though.

    1. Yes. Your comment on training. A very big "yes". The skill is in the person, not the tool. 2. I was impressed with sticking the knife into wood and it not inducing a wobble . . . which would have disqualified the knife. I love the handle design . . . although I don't know if it would fit my hand. The ergonomics appear to be great. To the uninitiated, a straight handle might be desirable as appears on many folders, but it doesn't work ergonomically. Yes, it is overbuilt. However that is desirable. I was carrying an acient, first generation Spyderco Delica today on my walk in the neighborhood. When there is a danger of shtf, I want that overbuilt knife. So what is ovebuilt folder next to the computer, a Spyerco plain edge Police model.

G'day Aaron, no doubt there's plenty of similarly designed folders out there, (incidentally, I've just been using the ol' Recon 1 .... in the garden, of all places, this morning, .... tactically ....... grafting tomato plants, lol). Yeah I'd prefer a steel upgrade, though I believe the CPM version of D2 is superior to the "garden variety" ; ) and represents very good value. Main thing is, (although ideally, it's a little short for a self defense role IMO), ultimately, if you dont mind a bit of weight in the pocket, these well made tactical jobs can do everything that can be expected of a folder I reckon. And good to see SOG, and their respective designers, progressively getting more in tune with the contemporary groove, (again IMO). Cheers Duke.
