Why The Rescuers Down Under is a Criminally Underrated Masterpiece

I've thought for a long time that The Rescuers Down Under is actually one of Disney's best movies. However I haven't seen many other people who feel the same, or if they do, they haven't made an in-depth analysis as to why its so good. So here is my review of this Disney Renaissance masterpiece.

    McLeach by himself is a great villain, but I think what truly makes the character is him being voiced by George C. Scott. One of the greatest actors of all time, in my opinion, and he was having so much fun in this role. Also, John Candy as Wilbur was a treat. Rest in peace to both these legends.

    I am so glad that McLeach is getting some love after all these years. The man is an ACTUAL monster! Ignoring his skills in hunting and manipulation, his quick thinking, and his ability to switch personalities on a dime, the dude managed to fight an entire BASK of SALTWATER CROCODILES with nothing but his FISTS and an UNLOADED GUN while rapidly being pushed down a river. And it's obvious that McLeach isn't a young guy either. At least in his late forties. Can you imagine how terrifying he must have been in his PRIME?!!! Eat your heart out Clayton, you've got nothing on this guy!

    Yeah, he is by far Disney's most evil villain I completely agree. Not even Frollo or Scar was THIS insanely sadistic. I think he is the blueprint for Miles Quaritch in Avatar. (Go watch "Way of Water now") as well as serial killer Mick Taylor in "Wolf Creek". Also, Mecha Godzilla in Godzilla vs Kong seems to be modelled after his truck.

He's a dead man and Joanna knows it but McLeach doesn't catch on until he looks behind him. Perfection! And he's voiced by George C Scott. @@Rockotarthepurplehatguy One interesting thing I noticed of McLeach falling to his death is he practically died by his own fault nearly similar to Medusa. Here is a rundown of each of their starts to ends: 1. Both become introduced with this hollier than though attitude. 2. Each captured a child over a select period of time. Based on Medusa's first ugh moment talking with Snoops over the phone yelling that he is been down at the bayou for months confirms Penny is captive for at least perhaps 3 months whereas Cody seems to be prisoner for only 2 days? 3. They've had no patience with their comedic sidekicks. Medusa smacks Snoop's hand full of small jewels because she can't be satisfied with the small goodies and McLeach kicks Joanna in the butt a couple of times if she annoys him too much Funnily enough both sidekicks have a scene of their hands getting hurt. For Snoops, it's his hands becoming smacked by Medusa's cane and for Joanna, Mcleach catches her hands in his egg tin when he thinks he stopped her from stealing his eggs 4. Both of their climaxes end on a body of water with reptilian beasts. Medusa becomes dragged by Penny on the swamp mobile where she rides her crocodiles and McLeach becomes pushed into the river to the falls by Bernard and has to fight off gators with his gun. 5. Their ends end in the water. Medusa's rope end snaps once Penny makes a sharp right tearing it off and shes flung into a chimney from the exploded riverboat and her last scene shows her avoiding her gators Brutus and Nero who she treated like garbage on the river chase snapping at her feet. While you can theorize maybe Medusa escaped them once the gators tired of her keep away, Mcleach is certainly dead from that large drop he took over the waterfall

    McLeach is the best vilain since he didn't ask minions to kill the kid like Scar, he actually tried to kill it by himself with a gun, into crocodiles, that's super brutal... He also clearly killed the male eagle and mimic a sticking to the kid... He also kept the boy captive and then manipulated him to know where the nest is... Scar is a animal and male lion use to kill the younglings of others when they become the alpha, here MacLeach is human... The death of the male eagle must be recent since the eggs are fertile... Bernard & Bianca have the best love story of Disney since they love eachother since start, Bianca knows he is the bravest and the guy proofs it during the whole movie.

    I grew up loving this movie and it's still my favorite renaissance movie from an animation standpoint. That very first shot is such a massive flex on its use of the multiplane camera to rival that morning shot in Pinocchio. And so much work and character into Marahute's animation. She moved in a real birdlike way, but she uses her bird body language to hold an entire "conversation" with Cody that a child can follow. Her "shrug" was so cute. Bernard's arc is good, Cody's competence while still clearly being a kid makes McLeach that much more menacing, Joanna is an entertaining villain sidekick, the pacing is tense and the action scenes are massive creative spectacles and wonderful payoff. Of all the movies I put on, my son loves this one the most. So it's not just nostalgia. It's just that good.

The song has two names one being "you get a line, I'll get a pole," and the other being the crawdad song so I thank him for introducing me to a great classic backwoods song. I also love every facial expression that McLeach has they are comedic gold every one of them. My favorite one has to be when he sees the golden feather and he smiles wickedly and that face says to me "this boy has a gold feather and he knows where she is and he's definitely going to tell me." That and his truck is definitely a sight to behold with good cgi matched perfectly with a really good and frightening score when his big monster of a truck comes into full view and his truck is definitely the definitions of beastly and all terrain in one and I love it

    7:34 Okay, but Cody had a mother who loved and would probably miss him and he got snatched basically in his backyard. Penny was trafficked from the city to a foreign place and used for labor. She was in that well just trying to survive 😭

    Lol I didn’t think anyone would read this. I love both movies and your analysis! I felt so close to Penny. Medusa tried to breakdown her self esteem and rob her of her dream of a real loving family and yet… When she was terrified and drowning in that cave,had the diamond in her hand, she saw her friends were in trouble, and turned around to save them🥹 Penny made me want to be brave & loyal to my friends, and to believe that kindness and help (no matter how small) are always available to those that ask.

    had this movie on VHS when i was a kid. i think i watched it maybe 5 times that i can remember, and i loved it each time. this was my first Rescuers movie, and it would be years before i saw the original. at that point, i was also a fan of All Dogs Go to Heaven, so i couldn't but help make parallels between the 2

    That scene walked so that the the Beacons of Gondor could run. It's strange to think that a scene dedicated to a cry for help could be so hopeful and inspiring, and probably a testament to the quality of the filmmaking that it came across that way.

    McLeach is my favourite Disney Animation villain, as he was more intimidating than his predecessor Madame Medusa. Medusa was generally a well written villainess, but one is more realistic, as poachers do exist in real life and are just as dangerous because majority won’t hesitate to harm people who attempt to stop them, which is what gives him that fear factor, as well as being afraid for Cody’s safety, especially later on in the movie. He’s cruel, sadistic and selfish in personality which makes him even scarier. McLeach additionally tricked the rangers into thinking Cody had fallen into crocodile infested waters and died, by tossing Cody’s backpack in so nobody would think he was kidnapped by a dangerous monster. Additionally that truck he drives, the Bushwhacker, was jaw droppingly amazing and chilling to look at, his home/hideout in the abandoned opal mines was just as sinister and empty. Also McLeach was just inches away from succeeding in his goal, and is perfectly alright with threatening Cody with weapons, including knifes and his gun, which is horrifying. Overall, everything about this character is bleak, disturbing and terrifying and I think it’s done really well to make the viewer think that’s definitely one person you wouldn’t want to meet in the Australian Outback. Nowadays, McLeach somewhat reminds me of Freddy Krueger, as they both wisecrack while being so cruel threatening and totally sadistic towards their victims, maybe that’s just me though. Hopefully with the recognition this movie is getting more recently, McLeach may get brought back into more cameos and roles in the future. It would be very cool if he was made into a boss in Kingdom Hearts for example.

    I completely agree, this movie has influenced SEVERAL big blockbusters that came out since then. In particular two recent ones (Godzilla vs Kong and Avatar: Way of Water) seem to be taking a few clues from it. Everything from their graphics, to the music sounds similar. They also feature a relationship between a child and a gigantic creature and that gives them a truly emotionally complex and touching storyline. They also feature truly horrible villains who enjoy abusing animals. The flight scenes in Avatar clearly took some inspiration from this one, and Mecha Godzilla in Godzilla vs Kong seems to be modelled after the monstrous poacher truck.

    Personally, I prefer the original 'Rescuers' - but that's just me. Anyway, I will certainly acknowledge that 'Down Under' has a lot to recommend it, with, yeah, a genuinely great villain, and some really nice animation and action. Have you considered doing a video on 'The Great Mouse Detective', if you've seen that? Personally, I think of it as being underrated in a lot of the ways you listed here for this one (not to mention, of course, the fact that it basically saved Disney's entire animation department, meaning that the Renaissance would most likely not have happened without it).

    So usually I listen to these while I draw, but I ended up watching the whole thing because by golly I had forgotten how beautiful the animation for this film is--I remember renting this movie a LOT growing up and I think it did a lot to influence how I visualize sequences when I'm writing or drawing. Also I love that you mention the soundtrack being so good because the guy who did it, Bruce Broughton, also did the score for Homeward Bound (also a good movie) and the theme song for JAG--this man was basically my favorite composer as a kid without me realizing. X'D (also love how you mention McLeach looking like an evil Indiana Jones when the music for the globetrotting sequence reminded me of Indiana Jones so now I'm wondering if that was intentional) And it's been years but the "did you steal my eggs?" scene still plays regularly in my head and I still drag any big feathers I find across my neck because of this movie. :D

    I think you need to rewatch the first Rescuers. Medusa is by far so much worse than the hunter guy. Penny wasn't just in "a bad spot" She was essentially prayed upon and chosen specifically because of how easy it would be for her to be manipulated. Medusa knew all of Penny's weaknesses and methodically picked at them to the point she knew she had broken this poor little girls spirit. So much so that she didn't even sugar coat the fact that when the mission was over, she would never leave that boat and "have it all to herself" because as Medusa states to her "Who would want to hold a homely little girl like you?" Don't forget that Medusa was also sticking this kid down a hole that floods regularly for a diamond that she didn't care if Penny died trying to get it. Imagine how many other kids Medusa got killed this way

  • @Rockotarthepurplehatguy

    @Rockotarthepurplehatguy

    True. Medusa was much more manipulative, and forced Penny into extremely dangerous positions. But I still feel like Cody had it slightly worse with McLeach, since McLeach was always treating him like trash on top of trying to murder him and tricking the authorities into believing Cody was dead so that no one would come to save him.

  • @sarahhenry3607

    @sarahhenry3607

    @Rockotarthepurplehatguy if we really think about it, Cody and Penny had damn near the same level of threat. Both antagonist put the kids in danger that threatened their lives. Medusa did it to Penny on the daily to find that diamond, adding on extreme verbal and emotional abuse. Penny also didn't have anyone to come look for her like Cody, being an orphan. And Medusa planned to keep it that way by either letting Penny die in a cave, or by leaving her in a dangerous swamp by herself.

    I love this movie due to nostalgia and it's just a really awesome classic, however I did realize one gripe (nitpick, really) that I have with it upon my most recent rewatch prompted by this video. First.. Cody can speak to animals (a trait shared with our last Rescuers child main character, Penny? Maybe human children in this world can all speak to animals for some reason.) So why not ever try to speak to Joanna and convince her to help him and the other animals, instead of staying so loyal to McLeach? He's clearly abusive to her so it probably wouldn't be such a hard convince, unless Joanna is too stubborn or stupid to see the logic of betrayal. (And we know she isn't really stupid either, given she came up with a plan to get rid of the fake eggs that would've worked to destroy them just as well as eating them would've.) It's just a small plothole that seems to be ignored entirely or forgotten.. And I suppose I could understand that any attempts at speaking to Joanna were probably cut to save time and make things a little more streamlined, plotwise, but streamlining a movie shouldn't leave many (if _any_ ) plotholes, if at all possible.

    I used to watch Rescuers Down Under on VHS over and over when I was a kid. The part that I loved the most was definitely the message relay sequence and considering that I've only recently realized that I'm probably on the autism spectrum, that makes even more sense. Like you said, the music in the scene was phenomenal, but what really got me was the inventiveness and feeling of expansiveness when we're shown many parts of rescuers' network, consisting of downed aeroplanes, message outposts and even A MOUSE-INFILTRATED HAWAIIAN MILITARY BASE of all things!
