Why the ocean is getting louder

What the world sounds like underwater.

We often think of the ocean as a quiet, peaceful place, filled with animals that don't make much noise. So when I went diving in the ocean for the first time, I was surprised at how rich the soundscape around me was: you could hear fish nibbling on coral and squid swimming past you. But more than anything, you could almost always hear the hum of a boat engine. It's part of a big problem in the ocean right now. Ship traffic noise has doubled every decade since the 1960s - and it's wreaking havoc on marine life.
This video was made in collaboration with Twenty Thousand Hertz, a podcast that dives deep into all kinds of stories about sound. Everything from "who's the person behind the voice on your phone," to "what do other planets sound like to our ears?"

They're literally having to scream over the sound of boats to converse with one another. Imagine us having to shout at each other constantly, every single day, just to be heard. It's sickening.

Mi We're still finding ways to reduce the noise from ships like the engines or propellers and also finding a way to drill for oil in a less animal populated area.

Supreme Except that he wasn't. Osama Obama has always been hailed as the messiah by media. He is and will always be god to them. So no. What goes around doesn't come around in the case. Donald Trump is getting blamed because he's not liberal so that automatically makes him the spawn of Satan. Good try though.

My sister is a researcher on the effects of sound population in the Atlantic ocean off the coast of the UK, and the effects of noise is devastating. The amount of massacres of dolphins and whales is increasing at an alarming rate. Entire groups of dead dolphins are being washed up on Cornish shores as a direct result of human created noise. This is a massive problem we need to address and so I thank you Vox for making a video about this topic

So well done! Thank you, I didn't even know this was a problem. It seems to me the more we increase our standard of living, the more we take away from the biosphere. Probably every step forward in human development is accompanied by some damage made to the environment. Who knows, maybe even covering large areas with solar panels will cause some problems we can't anticipate right now.

I believe that human race can both develop and keep the environment well preserved. If while planning new projects people took into consideration how it`s going to affect the nature and not only how it`s going to affect their wallets. People need to understand that we are part of the nature - not above it.

Copy paste from my comment expanding on what I mean when I say this is thanks to capitalism: "People that don't hate capitalism after watching this need to sit down and think about what's actually going on. This is the worst thing ever. It makes no SENSE to ruin our planet like this when the money needed are IN THE SYSTEM! The problem is that the top 1 or 2% has almost all the money. If they (I'm talking the huge corporates with aaaall the money) didn't take all the money that THEY DONT NEED! That they're just SITTING on, and put it into green alternatives like solar power and electrical cars and ending the meat industry/fuelling more lab created meat. Ending world hunger, and much more, basically fixing all the problems capitalism CREATES. Imagine what a better world we would have. How are people not seeing this."

All seismic vessels need 6nm clearance from this tows. As an ex deep sea mariner I can confirm the increase in seismic survey vessels - there are many if them working the deep seas - something unheard of say 40 years back. Lot of traffic on high seas and I realised that I was seeing less and less marine life on ocean surface ( whales / plankton / dolphins) - I am talking middle of atlantic and pacific and Indian oceans.

why is this the first time i'm hearing of this, and this video came out 4 years ago. there was so much evidence riddled throughout this video enough to make anybody reflect and yet this is something that most likely hasn't even reached mainstream media in the way this important info should. thanks vox for making me care.

There already are electric boats but they are very expensive, and the state isn't give tax breaks for it so the animals suffer.

Deepak Raj, actually, you would need fossil fuels to create the electricity for the boats so they create just as much pollution as petrol engines, and the batteries needed to run them are also worse for the environment than the typical metals and oils needed to run them. The lack of engine vibrations would help with the sound pollution though.

Yummy Hershey at the end bolth options will create pollution. fossil fuels are more established and well known. and batteries in transportation is only recently being recognized. but I think it's a good shot as more and more energy gets cleaner.

Yummy Hershey But energy can also be created through renewables, such as solar and wind farm, and can be stored in batteries.

Fun fact: the experiment in 2:45 is called the ATOC experiment. The theory behind it is when temperature increases the speed of sound also increases. So basically if the ocean are really warming the sound should take less time travelling the same distance as time progress. And the ocean channel that makes sound travel in grest distances is called the SOFAR channel ( sound fixing and Ranging channel). I know this is kinda off the video but i think its a great tid bit of info that all of us should be aware of

Why I love Vox even if it's a little biased to left.. their videos are incredibly informative and doesn't rely bashing the other side I don't see one story on fox channel that is investigative or informative in nature

they do that to brainwash you slowly. they don't rely on bashing the other side? have you seen their video called "admit it. republicans have broken politics." they use full sentences in their titles, graphs and clear voices in their videos, manipulated facts that aren't cited, and their videos gradually get more and more political. this is how they get you with their crazy left wing propaganda.
