I would love to see what percentage of footage they actually use after a week long shoot. Nearly every shot we see in the final version is simply breathtaking.

One of their producers, Chadden Hunter, told me that they shoot 6-8 terrabytes of footage for what ends up being a 3-4 minute sequence. High resolution and high frame rate are part of that but also, keeping the shot in focus has become much harder with these big camera sensors (shallower depth of field) and all the moving handheld shots. The camera operators for these shows are absolute beasts -joss

Documentaries are typically shoot everything and let the editor sort it out. Of course there is a general outline for what to get but most of the magic footage comes from the unplanned shots that are shot on reflex/instinct/whim. Source: I've edited a few doco's.

Sometimes I hear Attenborough’s voice in my head as I go about my day “The young adult male, hungry yet again, forages the pantry for more signs of potato crisps or Cinnamon Toast Crunch. While he should be out foraging for greener pastures or preparing a fresher meal, he seems to have decided to gain body weight & mass as a means of attracting a mate to better keep warm for cuffing season. What an interesting display of behavior. We’ll check back in with him later”

It looks like a child made those movies. But just imagine, RIGHT NOW we look at Planet Earth II and think DAMN this is the most incredible cinematic thing Ive seen........and we know 100% it will get better, but our mind cant grib as to how something so perfect and top notch can get any better.....Man I am looking forward to 2030, 2050, and man imagine the technology we will have around 2100????? A very large percentage fully endorse theocracy and terrorist actions. This needs to be acknowledged. Like the previous commenter stated, Vox pretends that they are treated like animals. They aren't. They are given extraordinary tolerance in the west. More than they receive from the gulf states.

The ending note was so apt...no technology can replace masterful storytelling. Having recently used a Glidecam (Stedicam alternative) for the first time and being excited about the potential for "epic" shots, I realized soon enough that just a steady shot doth not a compelling watch make :P The composition, the lights, the motif...and with non-actors just as with animals, capturing them without spooking them...all so crucial. The challenges, the disappointments, the joys of filmmaking is like nothing else for me :) Looking forward to more such videos (a welcome break from politics).
