I bought a 2023 Bolt EV, because it was the first EV I could afford, & it has a good range. Mary Barra is right that there is a large market for EVs that the average person can afford. A substantial number of people drive gasoline subcompact hatchbacks & just need an affordable EV alternative. Faster charging at Level 3 charging stations would attract more people who want to make long trips.

I got the 2023 EUV and like most of us buyers, we KNEW about the slower DCFC and we don't mind it, because we mostly use it as a commuter car, which was its intention when it came out. HOWEVER, the media makes a lot of noise about it. I hardly use DCFC, so it's a non-issue for me. I do like the idea of LFP batteries though.

@@bmw803 Edmunds says that my 2023 2LT Bolt is only worth 19K on a trade. Carvana says it’s only worth 16K. I only have 11K miles on it. There’s no way I’m going to trade it for anything close to that. Chevy will have to do better. I do love the Bolt though.

@@doggy911 I contacted a VW STEALER for an ID.4 ( 2021) and they offered me 24-26K plus tax. But I would have to fork out an extra 10K for the VW. Gave up on the idea. I have a 2023 EUV, with leather interior and redline edition. I like ID.4 as it's bigger comfier , but the BOLT is trouble free and has less shit to go wrong. Basic mechanical door handles to conventional mc pherson struts. I'll keep the BOLT.

If GM really wants to go all electric (i think thats a mistake but not the point) it really needs to keep cheaper cars like the bolt around and it needs to make sure they stay affordable! They cant have every car start at $40k. That isn’t their market. They need to get the bolt down to low 20s and bring the euv in around 25 so the blazer and equinox have room in the line up. It should try to make a car with about 5k between the base models from $20k-$50k

Ultium will be a smorgasbord of pick and play shared components that will bring increased functionality and lower cost through scale. To wit; sub $25K base model designed specifically for urban commuting. Expect a small six module LFP battery good for 175-200 miles. Ultium will allow buyers to spec models with larger eight and even ten modules . So batteries with 50, 65 and 80 kWh will be available. For the first time AWD will be available thanks to the Ultium AWD assist motor. I think the heat pump based Ultium Energy Recovery system will be standard in all model which will improve winter efficiency. Other features like vehicle-to-home/grid, improved infotainment system, over-the-air updates will greatly add to the new Bolt’s utility. Finally, I think Ultium will allow Bolt buyers to replace battery modules at a reasonable cost, possibly with improved cell chemistry thereby extending the life of the car. Of course DC fast charging will be improved, but I think buyers will come to understand that charging at home is much more beneficial for convenience and low operating costs. GM may not make much profit on a sub $25K Bolt but it will pay for itself with high levels of buyer interest that will increase showroom traffic for sales of its higher cost EVs.

GM has a habit of fixing something and ruining something else. Without Apple Play and Android they will lose a lot of sales. They will also have to spend the money to give the car 4G connectivity with a monthly fee which consumers don’t want. Consumer cars should have WiFi and do all its updates at home or when you are driving and have your phone connected. What it really needs is decent charging speeds 20%-80% ~1Hr, heat pump AC, decent range +300mi, vehicle to grid, over WiFi updates, advanced cruise control, and a full suite of safety features.

It’s like a hive mental health problem. Produce the best plug-in hybrid ever in the Volt, and stop making them in 2019. Now that more buyers want plug in hybrids, GM doesn’t have one. Produce the Bolts (we have two of them) and again, discontinue them. Now the Bolt(s) will be back, but say as little as possible about changes. This is a very confused company with irritatingly inconsistent leadership.

There's no getting around the need for the capability to take an occasional long road trip, which means there is a need for fast charging. It is rare that people can constrict their driving to local. Even a trip to a hub airport could cause range anxiety, or taking a kid to college. There are many reasons people will need to charge on the road, and that means at least 150 miles in 30 minutes.
