The Israeli-Palestinian situation and what Black September did to the athletes are separate matters. I support a Palestinian homeland. I support American Indian rights, but murdering U.S. athletes would never be justified because of our treatment of Indians. Same for the USSR’s treatment of the Baltic states, Spain and Catalonia, China and Tibet. The murdered athletes were killed out of spite and sadism, not a liberation cause.

I was 14 and still remember the awful and numbed feeling when Jim McKay reported they were dead.

My hero Jesse Owens,who stood up to the Nazis with dignity and pride .. crying over the lost athletes in the stadium. 2016 went myself and paid my respects at the memorial at Tel Aviv. They had a solid tip which they dismissed & then covered up all their failures after their bungled rescue attempt at the airport. Totally inadequate personal from top to bottom. That's how some historical tragedies or triumphs occur. Scenarios are run from experts and analysts and they're given to those in charge and they are ignored; being seen as impossible or unlikely. Events that come to mind are 9/11, The D-Day invasion, Pearl Harbor, and Jonestown.

I found it a great trip.l am not religious and often critical of Israel…. and other countries, depending upon my moods!! The memorial is sort of north central Tel Aviv. Easy walk from the promenade. The athletes' lives was lost from the moment authorities decided not to invest in more security. Furthermore, they really did everything in their power to cover up their mistakes. I was born and raised in Munich but quite a while after this happened. It is incredible that slowly during my childhood more and more of the authority's mishaps were revealed and I remember my parents (who were children during these games) being absolutely shocked. I'd say our coverage of this disaster is much more truthful nowadays but it is despicable how authority's used their power to cover up so much, particularly with the history we have in this country. Thankfully it seems that security during the world cup in Germany was much tougher and I know they invested a lot of time and money to make sure nothing would happen to anyone during that time (like seriously, if you look into the amount of research they did into hooligan fans and how they'd be able to stop them from even reaching the games' location. It's fascinating). It is just sad that something like this had to happen for them to do better.

It's incredible how one horrific incident can be the catalyst for life changing events. I was a high school student,who didn't know one Jewish person,but after that massacre,I began wearing a Jew star to show whose side I was on. Six years later I spent a year at The Hebrew University in Jerusalem .I also began my conversion process that year and went to the mikveh 5 years later in Jerusalem. I have lived as a religious Jew ever since.I've lived in Israel over 30 years,but Munich put me on the road and G-d willing this is where I'll always be.

The nightmare events of the Munich massacre are still so fresh in my mind. I ran out to where my sister was riding her bike, so thrilled the hostages were released. Hours later, I was lying on the floor in our living room, breaking into tears when the final, horrifying words came in. It was years before I was up to watching another Olympic Games. Those who did not spend hours watching the news for any glimmer of hope, then learning the absolute worst has happened, may never appreciate the grief most of the world felt, only the anger at hidden faces.

My good friend, a swimmer from S. America, was there when it happened. Apparently some athletes were kept rather in the dark about what was going on, only that "something" was very wrong. There was no internet, TV coverage wasn't what it is now, and thus they were shielded for a time against the true horror of what was happening.

The Israeli athletes and coaches exhibited so much courage, their admiral bravery should not be forgotten. I remember watching this fateful event unfolding on our TV and could not understand why? The Olympics is supposed to bring together the best of the worlds nations in peace and harmony to further friendships, appreciation and consideration for all the worlds peoples.

I was 6. Though I vaguely remember the moon landing, this was the first major world event where it hit me that the world can be an ugly place. I saw this when I was 14 years old..... I could not believe what happened and the Olympic Committee's COLD response to it. I'm 63 now and I still cannot get over that and I will not watch the Olympics......

Moral of the story: Do not put your sword away, for there will always be an enemy that would want to hurt you and your friends and family.

I had just graduated from high school in 1972. I remember seeing this all come down on live network TV. I just couldn’t believe what I saw, and then heard what the TV commentators were saying. This was nearly 50 years ago…and still remains vivid, ski masks and everything. The coverage just rolled live, confusions…and all. This was the beginnings of hi jacking planes.

@@Tracymmo Major airliners with lots of people that made international news were a bit later. Technically, the first hijacking was probably in the '20's, but that's not the subject at hand.

I never realized that this occurred until Bob Costas kept bringing this up since he was broadcasting the Olympics since 1992. After that, no Olympics back then acknowledged that this occurred. Thankfully in 2021 in Tokyo they acknowledged this and we had a good moment of silence for those that were killed in this tragic massacre. The words "Never Again" come to mind, and this should not happen in ANY Olympic venue. Politics and hate have no place where the Olympics are being done. Don't worry about the money lining the pockets that the IOC have, just the games themselves bring us closer together as humanity and the spirit of sportsmanship. May the families of the captured Israeli team members, those that were killed, and their generation continue to uphold their memories and dash away any evil that arises. We must all do better to come together as humans and share the same spirit that these Games gives us.

Sylvia - my story is the same as yours. Our child like innocence has been tarnished by life's experiences but it is in this same innocence that I've always seen race as well. I am white & only saw a black person face to face at maybe 8 years old. But way before that, I loved my Native Americans & had to have the room with the cowboy & Indian wallpaper. If course it depicted them battling each other with their guns & arrows. I would be told straight up that white man came along & forced them off their land. Yep, mom & dad both white - dads parents came to America. I would be answered in similar fashion when asking about black people & slavery. I never understood why skin color mattered. What people fail to see is that IF YOU were that person across the room - of a different race, from a different land, from a different belief system. You've lived every moment of joy, sadness & pains that guy right there has lived.... Now, would YOU really be so different. I know that there are people out there that are mentally ill or for other reasons but I do think most people try to be the best they can. Damn, I do ramble. Sorry.

I agree completely, I grew up in Wisconsin and had very similar experiences to you, especially with the races exposure. During some of the civil unrest of the 60s my mom would lock the doors when we drove thru various areas of Milwaukee. I never understood it and I understood less why race even mattered. I've always judged people by their actions and heart. My mother was surprized at Back to School night in 2nd grade that my teacher was black, and when she got home asked why I didn't tell her. My answer was why, was i supposed to? I didn't care, my teacher was awesome and that was all that mattered to me. I still feel that way about it. And the more we highlight our differences and attack those differences the longer the divides will last. I wish people xould find it in their hearts to be kinder to each other. Maybe hatred is our population control. I don't like it at all.

I turned six a month after this happened, and it shocked me and made me cry a lot. That wasn't supposed to happen! I loved watching the Olympics with my mom, but when this happened, she didn't try to hide it from me. She told me exactly what happened. I remember Jim McKay, "They're all gone." And yeah, I remember a lot of the Vietnam coverage too. (My uncle died in that war.) Mom never tried to sugar-coat any of that. Sad times. 😢

People get their information from many sources. It’s up to the person themselves to do the research to see what they just read or saw is true. Yea, I suppose living in the hellhole they've been consigned to since the allies decided to steal their land rather than properly repatriate the Jewish people to their rightful homes throughout Europe, in particular eastern Europe, after the war isn't at all to be blamed. Chickens always come home to roost, sadly. I'm always curious when I see this kind of one-sided statement as to what else you'd expect to happen in this situation, from any people of any background.

It's weird how apolitical the Olympics are--the previous 1968 games in Mexico City saw the Tlatelolco massacre, which alone should have resulted in increased security.

That should have resulted in increased security in Mexico because it was a sign of potential rioting that might affect the Olympics. Although the US was backing the corrupt government (quel surprise), it was an internal affair, and the government did all the killing. It had no implications for future Olympic Games. Whereas the motive for the Munich Massacre was an international affair, terrorists were the killers, and an Olympic team was targeted onsite, during the games. The Mexican body count was far higher, but the event was less of a threat to the Olympic Games themselves. And one of the criticisms of West Germany was that their security was much more lax than previous Games, suggesting that there was no lack of security in Mexico City. My preference would have been for the IOC to cancel the Mexico City Games and hold them somewhere else, but that wouldn't have been possible. Countries that host the Olympics should meet the minimum requirement that they don't slaughter their own people, or at least that they haven't done so in a certain number of decades.

“Less than 50 years before…” It was a lot less than 50 years before, since in 1972, this would be only 27 years after the Holocaust ended in 1945 with the liberation of the camps. To put that in context, it’s akin to me remembering something that happened in 1996, in 2023. The fact these people went to Germany when they got the Olympics is astonishing.

As awful as this event was, it led to the creation of GSG-9 and The entire concept of Police SWAT. Much like in industry and how rules and regulations are written in blood, answers to tactical situations only come from extraordinary circumstances. It's a terrible reality, but it's reality.

I remember watching this as a 10 year old, and 4 years later driving to Montreal for the 1976 olympics. Been to Canada many, many times. They searched out whole car going in, top to bottom. Quebec/Canada did a good job on security. I also remember attending the Israel/France soccer game, a lot of people booing the Israeli team. There is a whole lot of anti-semitism in the world.

I attended some kind of event at the 76 Olympics,but I don't know what event it was my mother and I had terrible seats People were standing, and I was still short at 8 years old. I still appreciate that she tried to give me the experience of attending the Olympics.

I think there's something to be said for a big strong dad with shoulders you can sit on to see whatever's happening :) @Schimined, I can understand anger and outrage against a nation that commits bad acts, but generalizing that to hatred of a people and a religion, and specifically to individuals, I will never understand that. People who hate Jews just need more Jewish friends. People who hate Muslims need to get to know them, and if they're incredibly fortunate, get invited to a Muslim home as a dinner guest! We need to stop seeing whole groups of people as "the alien other."

I’m glad to hear that my country kept you and the olympians safe:) since we are the fourth safest country in the world:) we actually aren’t always the most knowledgeable about complicated security situations 😔 so I am glad that they listened to professionals and took the situation seriously. I am sorry for the antisemitism though 😢 it is true, we suffer from that affliction as well as so many other countries do. In 1939, the MS St. Louis (the ship of the damned) was sent out with ~900 Jewish refugees and Canada was one of the countries that rejected them 🥺 I think of that every time our government suggests bringing more refugees into our country. We have a population that doesn’t produce enough people to sustain itself anyway:) we can make room for vulnerable people who are running away from persecution.

I am Canadian. I watched this as it happened (at least everything i could find i lived in a rural area and tv channels were limited resulting in news flash reports). I will never forget my horror and disbelief that this could ever happen. You report has given me much more info than i had known. They made so many mistakes here. The risk assessment from pre-olympics was excellent and should have been followed through. They police should have brought in military for assistance especially as they were dealing with a paramilitary team. And all of the info on tv? How could they have never cut off all media? An unforgettable horror. I will never forget this!

They were trying hard to be the opposite of fascist Nazis. Cutting off all TV coverage would undermine that. What would be a more typical response is to cut off the electricity to the building so the terrorists couldn't watch the broadcasts. That sort of tactic was in use in 1972. I do think Jim McKay (who I love!) crossed a line though in calling so much attention to the snipers. That sorta happened again at the beginning of Desert Storm in 1991. CNN's Baghdad bureau was still open and broadcasting live during the US bombing. (My memory is that this went on for a couple days, but I'm not really sure.) They shut down their operations when they learned Saddam Hussein was using their live video coverage to track the US attacks.

Your last statement is untrue. The political issues between Germany and Israel have been very much resolved. The families of the deceased were even compensated for their loss, invited to a memorial ceremony and received a national apology from Germany. Unless you mean three political issues between Israel and Palestine. Those are not likely to be resolved until the nations allied to Israel and Palestine start putting pressure on them.

I remember as a boy being filled with national pride when Mary Peters won Britains only athletics Gold medal at Munich. There was so much celebration because she was from my part of the UK. And then just a couple of days later being horrified at what happened to the Israeli athletes in the Village. Very sad and tragic. It really overshadowed what should have been a joyous occasion. Terrorists are the same all over.

I remember watching this on TV as it was happening. I was only 12 and it really scared me. It was tough to realize these terrible things could happen.

Never in the history of the world was there a country or land called "Palestine," nor was there ever a "Palestinian" people. "Palestine" is an occupation term referring to The Land of Israel. Like the Dutch East Indies to Indonesia, Rhodesia to Zimbabwe, Bechuanaland to Botswana and Ceylon to Sri Lanka, "British Palestine" returned to be Israel. Don't be sad for the Arabs, they still have 22 Muslim, Apartheid, misogynous, dictatorial, fictitious countries to call home.

Great video. The documentary narrated by Michael Douglas titled ‘One Day in September’ is an excellent documentary on this event. They continued with the Olympic Games the whole time that this hostage crisis was occurring.

The West Germans messed it up from the get-go. They should have let the Israelis send in the Sayret Makal in at least their snipers could actually hit targets where they needed to.

If the Germans really wanted to wash their hands of the whole mess, they should have gladly let the Israelis take over. I strongly suspect that German arrogance and pride made that decision.

The palestinians didn't "lost their homeland" in 1948 as claimed in the video. There never was an independent "Palestinian" state, land or country. They started a war to ethnic cleanse the land of jews and then in 1948 the neighbouring arab countries joined (invaded) to destroy Israel. During this war that they started, thousands of local arabs fled or were expelled for harboring invading soldiers in their villages. Many arabs chose to stay and live in peace in Israel. At the same time, the invading armies completely ethnic cleansed of jews the land they were able to occupy (the so-called West Bank, Gaza and East Jerusalem.) The narrator in the video claims they wanted to "regain control of the land", which is something that never existed! The land was controlled by the Ottomans before the British Mandate. Then from 1948 until 1967 the West Bank was controlled by Jordan, who claimed it as theirs and Gaza controlled by Egypt. The so-called palestinians (meaning local arabs, forget about the palestinian jews) only got any control of some land thanks to the Oslo Accords and the good faith of Israel in exchanging land for peace (it didn't worked).

I remember years ago hearing that Germany was trying not to come off like they did in 1936 so their security was very lax and that was the origin of the situation.

They left the plane because they were not given a clear plan of action. They arrived in Fürstenfeldbruck shortly before the terrorists because they had been in that underground garage - there simply was no second team.

I was in high school.. I remember that Olympics, a friend was riding equestrian events and I was watching everything I could that year. The fear of what was happening, and knowing it was the Israeli team that was attacked was horrifying. I was also a fan of Mark Spitz, who won 7 Gold for the US in swimming that year. Your history of 1947-48 is not correct. The British suggested the Mandate of Israel for the Jews and a larger area of (former Transjordan, Ottoman Empire previously) and the UN approved this division of land. The Jews did not "steal" land from "Palestinians." During the 1948 war, Arab villages that did not attack Jews were not forced out and were left alone.

Kids born today, overall, really have no authentic grasp of such traits, and it's taken the magic and beauty right out of the very soul of life. The 20th century -- despite all its shortcomings -- was LIGHT-YEARS better than the 21st has ever been thus far. They're not even in the same class. You say the Holocaust was less than “50 years in the past” at 0:47 but in actual fact, the war only finished 27 years prior to the games beginning. I'll give this video a generation D+. Some interesting points that most people probably weren't aware, a significant fact that illustrated how indifferent the German Police were to the Israeli victims was omitted, and the lie that is now mainstream which is the cause of worldwide support for terrorism. The fact omitted: this event took place when the world still didn't know how to deal with terrorists, and this hostage taking was particular foreign as most country's had no kind of training or experience to deal with such terrorism. In fact, the only country in the world that had squads who did have the experience to deal with this type of situation, who did have the training, was Israel. They asked if they could assist and advise the German police and that request was turned away as well. The lie: the narrator tells talks about the conflict between Israel and Palestine. Palestine, for almost 2000 years, was always considered the Jewish homeland formerly called Judea. It wasn't until Arafat, in the face of much consternation by other Arab leaders, began promoting the myth of Palestine as an ancient Arab homeland as reality. You state that "the Palestinians lost their homeland in 1949" - a statement so foolish it would be laughable if it wasn't so tragic. After WW1 and the creation of other Arab states, the land from the Iraq border to the Mediterranean sea was referred to as 'Palestine' and the people living there Palestinians. And there were Arab Palestinians, and there were Jewish Palestinians. Even the Arab Palestinians didn't come up with the idea of a national Arab Palestinian identity until the mid-60's. They should have talked to the copy writers of this video and they could have given themselves an extra 15 years or so.
