Why the MTT was actually TERRIFYING
Ойын-сауық
Today we'll take a look at the MTT - Multi Troop Transport - used by the Trade Federation during the Battle of Nabbo, and later the Separatist Confederacy of Independent Systems during the Clone Wars

@@VerdeMorte fun fact, commando droids were designed to be able to blend in with b1's (I remember seeing an image of commandos painted to look like regular droids, can't seem to find it), so they could 100% stack into the MTT racks
Weirdly enough, that Episode 1 tie-in game was the best introduction for how terrifying the droid army could actually be. There was one specific sequence where just a single AAT was sitting in a section of the Theed square holding off the entire Royal Guard detachment with the bodies of those unfortunate enough to attack it strewn about. Yeah, once they fought something with the strength of the clone army they were much more vulnerable, but when the droid army was used as a weapon of terror per their original intention, they would be a nightmare to behold.
It's amazing how the AAT and MTT look so Star Wars even though they're a complete departure from the OT design aesthetic. Almost everything in the OT was pointy and angular while these are round and smooth.
@andrewmalinowski6673
11 ай бұрын
Almost everything in the PT is a departure from the OT, but unless compared directly like the Eta Actis and V-Wing to the TIE/LN or Venator to Imperial it's hard to see a common design lineage given how they retconned everything to "make sense"
@clancykohl

@@andrewmalinowski6673 it's deliberate to show how under the republic everything was lavish and people had the luxury to care about aesthetics and such, while under the Empire everything was more industrialised. It's even analogous to the real world with cars for example, look at 50s cars (wich actually inspired some of the prequels designs) and then 80s cars. Where stuff developed from flowing shapes and such, to basically boxes on wheels

Its always a good day when Eck sings praises towards CIS vehicle or ship design.
The biggest thing that never made sense to me is deploying the droids in front. It's designed to take a lot of direct fire in the front, so it can deploy its droids right into the battle field. If that's the case, why deploy your droids between the enemy and your armor? Deploying them from behind would give the droids much more protection as they boot up.
@DIEGhostfish

I believe it is intended to deploy them behind cover and then emerge as needed.

Being hover tanks, doing a 180 degree turn probably isn't a difficult maneuver. It probably can't deploy out the back because that's where the more sensitive components are located, and they'd get in the way of the deployment mechanism.
@123456gordon
Жыл бұрын
My thoughts exactly. It's like russian BTRs, they deploy troops from the side without cover, and as they're deploying they're getting picked apart by enemy fire. Western IFVs deploy from the back, so you have the entire vehicle providing cover. Not sure if doctrine or just a massive oversight.

@Antidragon-nl7by True, but they don't want to turn the less armored side to enemy fire either. So really best option is deploying behind a hillside, the top hatch going up actually provides some cover against indirect fire.

That's cause it was. There was a good reason hardly anyone ever went directly in front of it, even the clone tanks.
I grew fond of these in the RTS game Star Wars Battlegrounds. Very tough, pretty good long range blasters and the perfect place to stash wounded troops and those important but delicate repair bots. Classic game btw, I got past the dated graphics and I was hooked.
I always loved the hailfire tanks used by the confederacy of independent systems in the first battle of geonosis. They have such a cool design but apart from that battle they doesn’t get a lot of attention. In my eyes they are perfect glass cannons to pair with mtts and atts seeing how well it counters the republic heavy armor tanks. I don’t know why isn’t it used more. Maybe I’m wrong and if so I’d love if you’d made a video about.. Love your channel and keep up with the amazing work.

The SPHA (Self Propelled Heavy Artillery) would be a nice subject. Yes, I know, MetaNerdz Lore just released their video on it. I think it could be converted into an /awesome/ recreational vehicle, especially if you add repulsorlift engines to turn it into an air speeder or land speeder for better terrain handling.

I was very scared of the MTT scene when I first saw it. The eerie way they pop up from behind the hill and the oddly realistic battle droids all coming to life.
Love that your doing more Sepratist content. Such an underrated fraction.
Nicely done, thank you! The front of the MTT with its bulbous and strange threatening protrusions always reminded me of the Harkonnen Frigate seen in Dune (1984). Thank You.
The MTT was modelled after elephants so its large complement of droids make sense. It was originally 64 but changed to over a 100. Its massive design allows it to bulldoze as seen in Naboo, and the twin turrets are dangerous. An impressive piece of Tech from Baktoid. It could benefit from an ATTE style top turret and an LAAT rear turret to give it more defensive and offensive capabilities.
I had the exact same response! Saw the trailer at the movies at about 9 years old, saw the grass field and thought… “OMG this is Star Wars” I have a feeling it was the sound effects initially or something that made me think immediately of Star Wars…
I just got a huge nostalgia burst when you showed that page from one of the Star Wars vehicle books. I absolutely adored those things when I was younger 😊

Tons of republic vehicles are hover vehicles, from bark speeders to fighter tanks to even there legged cannon, I'm sure the equipment to jam repulser lifts would be very expensive to keep in big numbers, let alone standard issue
I'm with you! I remember sitting in the movie theater when the trailer started. Seeing those tanks come up over that hill was epic!!!
I remember a line from the phantom mencae which said “theres a thousand terrible things coming this way” which really made me feel the terror of these things
It would be awesome if you could cover all weapon types again as a video remake
Very nice! Maybe a Rebel Tanks video? Some of them in the video games are pretty cool.
Repulsors still need energy, if you hit the power generator or power coupler, the power lines or energy storage, you can take the repulsors out without them itself failing. But given that those parts all all well hidden inside the MTT it´s probably easier to attack the repulsors directly, unless you have a proton torpedo-equipped fighter at hand.
A upload in the morning what is this ? Glad to see a upload
I have to say, the trade federation and early CIS themed droid army where things were still mostly brown and tan themed is still my favorite era of the droid army.
My LEGO set of this troop transport is a pride and joy of mine, sits at the front of a big shelf, I love the way the front opens up
The ‘Spider Walker’ would be a nice video idea
Never thought about it until now, but the MTT reminds me quite a bit of the 40k Space Marine Mastadon transport. Both are heavily armored and designed for frontal assaults (though the Mastadon does have an anti air turret on top as a plus) and make for terrific siege tanks (the Mastadon has a massive front hatch that opens up as well as one in the back, which makes it real useful for breaching since it will usually drive through a wall and act as a access point for friendly troops).
I remember having the lego MTT when I was younger and the best part of it was that it came with so many droid minifigs to use when playing with the sets.
Haven't watched yet, but I wanna do the math real quick, so from what I've found, an mtt could hold 112 battle droids. From what I can see from diagrams, a C-9979 Landing craft could hold about 7 mtt along with many att. So if you multiply the amount of 1 mtt (112) by the number of mtt in 1 landing craft (7) you get 784 battle droids brought onto the battlefield.
Shows it can do more then just deploying droids.
One of the things I noticed when the Battle of Naboo first hit the screens, you don’t see a Gungan ever get shot or killed. Plenty of droids die, but the scene is so one sided and toned down that you don’t see hardly any dead Gungans. Even at the end when they win you barely see any gungan bodies. It always struck me as Lucas catering to kids too much, and I felt the movie suffered from it.

It's quite unfortunate that he didn't have the same mindset as he has for RotS. A one sided slaughter would have really driven home the power of the droid army.
“I’d be so proud of where I am today.” Fuck yeah, bro. Like no joke, being someone your child self would look up to and be proud of is the ultimate test of manhood. When Phantom Menace came out, I got the MTT Lego set. It came with B1 droids, a cool mechanism to open the front door, and a sliding system for the troop rack. The rear was hollow so you could load up the s,maller rack transport. I always wondered why the smaller vehicle was included until I rewatched the films and noticed the same vehicle in the forest of Naboo. Still one of the coolest sets I owned growing up

Heck yeah! So happy to see some positive Star Wars content. Thanks Ecks!
When I first saw the MTT in theaters i instantly fell in love with the Droid army.
Do you think the Separatists GAT(Ground Armored Tank) was better than most people gave it credit for? I mean it didn’t have the array of weapons and armor that they AAT had, but it was fast, it’s weapons were perfect for urban environments, and it couldn’t be commandeered due to its droid brain.
I think seeing that giant armoured column marching across the plains and hills towards Theed is awesome!
Definitely would love to see you cover more Droid and CIS hardware, havent gotten to watch much Clone Wars yet so had no idea that the Dropships operated by just hanging the droids underneath the back.
I am always a fan of hearing more about Legends Clone Wars information and stories. :D
I think what would’ve made the MTT even more terrifying is if they had a compartment to deploy at least two or three droidekas
@calebbarnhouse496
Жыл бұрын
That would really help, my biggest problem with the MTT is that the droids are unprotected while being deployed which basically means that anyone equipped with a blaster can take out almost as many as there firerate allows, having droidekas use there shields to cover for them would really help
The tendency to make overly tall ground vehicles is a part of Star Wars' aesthetic that i really like. They feel more sci-fi and alien than just some efficiently designed earth-like vehicles. If i were to offer an upgrade, though, it would be more anti-personnel turrets/firing positions on the tops, for shooting saboteurs; that would also help add to the image of the forces looking down on you.
Would love a video on the CIS “snail tank” !
Literally my favorite Star Wars ground vehicle when I was a child.
If you haven't already the Sabre Tank and it's variants would be cool
🤔 . . . Maybe compare the different troop transport vehicles & see which one is #1 & such…
That shot of the Trade Federation army marching on Theed is one of the best shots of the Prequel Trilogy imo, and the battle against the Gungans later is just so good. Shame the rest of the movie couldn't match it.

The battle with the Gungans is only marred by the presence of Jar-Jar. It would be a perfect sequence without his bad slapstick routine.

A video on the turbo tank better known as the juggernaught of the GAR would be great to see.
Just to think if they didn’t have a control ship for droids they would of won
I'd enjoy seeing the evolution of battle droids throughout the timeline, from old Republic to post-imperial era, from the HK model to whatever terminator abomination the New Republic made against the Vong.
As soon as i got my lego MTT as a kid, i modified it to have a turret on the top and anti-air at the back
I want the original Droid gunship that's in the background of your last clip. There's like NO LORE about those at all
I recall the tanks rolling over the hill as the first trailer too
Oh the CIS, they were designed for victory, but fated for defeat.
I thought it would make a great versatile vehicle that could carry any number of heavy equipment in the front bay that it could carry into combat and keep protected until it needed to be deployed quickly. Stuff like mortars, turrets, fortifications, etc. It reminds me of Thunderbird 2, as the big bulk carrier with specialized equipment
Finally droids getting recognized
I really would like a more in depth video on the at-te model variants.
I’d like to know more about the AT-AP or AV-7 Cannon, maybe the UT-AT too! The MTT was a favorite of mine, always looked cool and I loved the way the troops were deployed.
What would be great for the MTT is if they put on an auto turret similar to the one on the Millennium Falcon in ESB on top. Or it could be a remote controlled turret by a co-pilot in the top portion in the MTT as shown in the cross-section. Duel purpose would be nice as the co-pilot could switch on the auto turret when they have to direct their attention elsewhere. It would be good for an anti-personnel role, light vehicles, and slower aircraft like the LAAT.
it's a crime we never got a lego MTT ultimate collector's series set, but there were some real bangers in playsets. If they ever make an UCS one however- I'm gonna get you one
I remember seeing that trailer in theaters too, my god how hpye little 8 year old me was
"You don't really see repulsorlifts fail." Jabiim would like to have a word with you. ;)
I am running a TTRPG using the Fantasy Flight System which is currently set during the Clone Wars. And we have laerned first hand just how utterly terrifying MTTs can be. The goal of the players whenever MTTs are involved to destroy it first (unless there is a Tactical Droid nearby, that's the exception it seems) lol
This droid unloading scene is my personal favorite moment in Star Wars. The ships look great, the soundtrack is wonderful (Battle of the Droids is my favorite part of the entire Star Wars score) and the whole moment is amazingly terrifying (my first thought was: the Gungans are toast).
Imagine mtt units crushing walls and trees and then a bunch of at te walkers and or juggernauts barging in through the opening
Something about this reminds me of the AT-AT. It’s like they combined the MTT and the republic troop transport. Also I think there is some serious psyc warfare with these.
The Droid army was some of the most brutal armies to face. It took a modified soldier clone army to defeat them. The Empire wouldn't stand a chance if it wasn't for that deathstar
I'd love to see you covering some of the Vehicles from the Clone Wars Game like the AT-XT (:
I like the large backside that I assume can deploy a few STAP units that would be able to cover a few of the flanks and being a droid army all you need is one droid to see someone on the flank and now the entire force knows something is up

The MTT is cool. I would of liked to have seen it’s troop being unloaded to the rear, as it allows it’s bulk to protect them as they dismount. I agree it needed some type of dual purpose turret on top to deal with air threats and give it more general coverage
Love Eck's Phantom Menace content
I think the reason the MTT doesn't have lots of fire power is that it is mimicking the US/Western Naval concept of having an Aircraft carrier (MTT) which allows for forward deployment but limited deployment, surrounded by smaller, high fire power destroyers (the HAG-Ms) used to protect that asset. This allows a more versatile deployment as once the droid infantry have dismounted the MTT, the MTT can be left behind without losing much weapons capabilities (as it is quite slow and large it wouldn't be useful in an urban skirmish environment).
please do the clones turbo tank if you haven't, this was a really cool video
The Trade Federation/CIS have some awesome vehicle designs. Even if the B1s are often used for comic relief, the droid army overall is pretty intimidating.
6:30 While it has a very small part in the movie, this craft actually has two lego sets! One in 2000, as literally just the MTT rack on a sled as was mentioned, and another, slightly modified one in 2007 of just a platform that droids stand on. Pretty neat what the set designers manage to find for reference material.
@EckhartsLadder Ive played Arma 3 Clone wars mod as a Zeus and I will say the MTT holds an impressive amount of troops. Using it along with some small arms alongside it made my players actually struggle against it. I would drive it up to the clones front lines, the canons would blast away at the cover and troops causing disarray as the droids are deployed.
This seems to also be influenced by old siege engines. Mainly battering rams. They also functioned to protect an attack force underneath it.
Of course! Not only does it shoot at you but the spawn in a bunch of battle droids from its face!
Big fab of these, very cool design though I agree the top could have been a tank turret. Something that rests relatively flush with the hull with snub nose barrels to avoid messing up the profile
The problem with the droid army was leadership, one the higher ups were puppets but even on the local area they were normally traders, merchants or bankers.
Now I wondering if thr MTT is really a vehicle or is actually a droid. Some of the drawings seems to show vulture-droid like photoreceptors at the top. And it wouldn't be the first time we see a vehicle that's actually a droid in the CIS army, their gunships too are both droids and transport crafts at the same time.
