Hello ji

I've got a GREAT idea for all these Emergency radios: one of the radio bands should be TV audio so while you're sitting there powerless, at least you can listen to your favorite TV shows. EZ to design into these radios and worth every penny while you're sitting there doing nothing IMHO.

I remember when I was a kid (in the 80s and 90s), I had a clock radio I could pick up tv audio on at night. (Which I would listen to when I was supposed to be going to sleep!) I don't remember what TV station it was. Might have been ABC or NBC. But you could get it by tuning to the very beginning of the dial. I imagine since everything has gone digital now, you can no longer do that. But I think this would be a good idea to still have the ability to do!

The Kaito Voyager 500 is the best and lowest priced emergency radio. I have around 5 of them throughout the house and work and have owned one for many years. I even bought one for my ex. Highly recommend!

I much prefer analogue radio controls and screens. There's less to go wrong. Kaito KA500 consistently comes up as recommended by people. The KA600 is digital and it has some add-on junk. A few people have commented about digital emergency radios failing more easily than the analogue versions. I've read and heard the tiny built-in solar panels are more of a novelty, because they're too small to charge the batteries in a decent time. We don't have NOAA weather in Australia, so that feature is pretty useless to us, here, unfortunately. I already have a small portable solar panel, that can charge AA and AAA batteries, so I really just want a basic radio that can take either of those battery sizes and it has hand crank. As yet, I haven't found one.

The Midland ER series has easily removable/rechargeable lithium ion batteries along with a large AA battery compartment. It's a better radio. However, I just wish they would include SW with all of these emergency radios.

The KA500 isn't a solar radio; it's battery-powered with a small solar panel to maintain a fully-charged internal battery. According to Kaito USA, the solar panel will NOT charge the battery if it's empty. The solar panel is supposed to power the radio if you have a sunny day. You must use the dynamo or an external 6V adapter for charging, then the solar panel will keep it fully-charged if you leave it in the sun every day. The redundant types of powering is best for real emergencies. You should keep different kinds of batteries or cells in your emergency kit.

Hi Russell, I stumbled upon your channel a few days ago when looking online for reviews of the ThorFire lantern. I ended up watching all of your other videos, as I also have an interest in emergency preparedness. I wanted to thank you hugely for the time and effort that you've put into making these videos. You are such a natural communicator. So many of these kinds of preparedness channels focus on irrelevant stuff. You know the kind I mean "if you wanna prepare, then you need 8000 guns, an anti-EMP device and 500 years worth of freeze-dried pasta, else the government will track you down...". Sadly that puts many everyday people off the idea of being that bit more prepared, which at a sensible level is good for individuals, families and communities. Your channel is a wonderful, and enchanting antidote to the unhealthy side of the hobby. Thank you, and best wishes to you and your family across the pond there!

Where you wrote, '...focus on irrelevant stuff. You know the kind I mean "if you wanna prepare, then you need 8000 guns"...' I would proffer to you that it only requires one gun and one bullet to take EVERYTHING you have in 'preps' etc. away from you, up to and including your life. Everything is important. You can make it 3-5 days without water, 45-75 days without food but less than a second if you have no way to defend yourself from the aforementioned. People will become animals if the worst happens.

Mine seemed to need a break-in period, but it's now very reliable.

Personally, I use a Tecsun PL-680 for most of my radio listening, and a mini emergency radio (with flash light, dynamo, and solar cell) for weather reports or for getting to my emergency kit box. After I set up things, like lanterns, heaters, and other radios, I will listen to the mini for reports or music.

I thought we had a possible break thro! I looked at the reviews of your PL-680 & 5% out of 222 reviews were pretty dreadful. Trying not to fall into confirmation bias (but I most likely am, haha), paraphrasing my previous post "I get the impression that across all the highly reviewed emergency gear that pops up on KZread, buyers can still be caught out by poor manufacturing quality & quality control. Many leading brands, all receive a worryingly large amount of bad reviews on Amazon. Bottom line is I honestly believe it's a lottery as to whether you receive one of the well made or poorly made items..... "

I just bought the smaller one to carry in my backpack or car, £27 for the KA369

I have the same one in green. Great little radio!

I have to add a log wire to the antenna got receive any weather station, so I use a different radio for that. Otherwise, analog-tuning radios are more robust, and the battery lasts longer, than digital ones, although it's not that easy to tune to a specific radio frequency (on SW.)

3-4 batteries, depending on the weather radio, mine takes 4 AA batteries

I get the impression that across all the highly reviewed emergency radios that pop up on KZread, there is poor manufacturing quality & quality control. Kaito along with several other well reviewed models I looked at, all receive a worryingly large amount of bad reviews on Amazon. Bottom line & credit to you where it's due, I honestly believe it's a lottery as to whether you receive one of the well made or poorly made Kaito radios..... I was intending to use the FM radio on Baofengs for local group emergency preps - but then I received a few that didn't have it, nor did their replacements... hence looking closely at these. Also solar chargers appear to be blighted with the same manufacturing / quality inconsistency issue :(

Mine had a blob of solder loose inside the case that just moved and rattled everywhere. Could have caused a short circuit and killed the radio. I found it easily once I opened the case but still shouldn’t have been there. I do love how easy to use it is though. Very accessible and straight forward.

For how long can it run using the AA batteries ?

PRACTICE , PRACTICE.... using your radios occasionally. You need to know how to use it in a real emergency. You won't have time to read user guides!

Too many 1 star reviews for $50 emergency radio that does not work

it has USB? if so, can I play music throught the radio?
