As a Jamaican still living in Jamaica. Idk what that DJ going on about. In JA we eat beef patty, cheese patty, curry chicken patty, breakfast patty (egg, bacon, cheese and veggies), soy patty, lobster patty, shrimp patty, curry goat patty, Ackee patty. We eat almost everything in our patties and we ain’t lose an ounce of heritage lol. One thing though that we as Jamaicans do love is food that is plentiful, full of meat and fresh

Hey clarke, I just had a beef patty with pepperoni, mustard, and olives on it. It was delicious. The Caribbean lady who made it for me by hand thanked me for my business.

I lived in the Caribbean for a year and a half. Little island called Anguilla. They had one real bakery that would open at 5am and close a little past noon. They easily sold hundreds of beef pattys a day. You had to race to get them before they were gone. My god were they heavenly. I'm back in NY now, and some of these pattys around here are great, but never as fresh as that little bakery.

I literally just watched a chef on the Munchies channel make Jamaican style beef patties from start to finish with beef fat in the crust and what did he do, added cheese to one of them. That's because the pasty was originated by the English. Remember, settlers brought over their foods from different parts of the world and imported/exported spices, fruit, food, etc. to and from different countries. This is why I argue with people about the term "soul food" which is southern cooking that's a combination of different cultures/settlers which was shared among each other. African female slaves were taught to make those meals. Just like the Jamaicans.

We got beef patties in school too...elementary school, middle and high school...I always looked forward to having them

Many cultures have versions of this. Italians have the calzone and stromboli, Brazil has the pastel, Indians have Samosas, college kids have hot pockets. It just seems to me that it's a convenient way of getting nutrition on the go, so many cultures have adapted their own.

If you never had a beef patty with mozzarella cheese you’re missing out the cheese keeps all the meat from falling out. Also if you never had a beef patty made fresh at a Jamaican spot you’re definitely missing out

Resell Cartel well it’s my opinion and many people agree that the patties form that chain are top notch.

I'm from Toronto and I was basically raised on beef patties. $1 would get you a pop n patty at the variety store by my school. I moved to Edmonton and was over the moon to find a little West Indian grocery store that sells patties. The brand I LOVE too. If it's not Tinnel's I promise you, I don't fuck with it. Tinnel's patties make me not miss my city so much.

Im from portugal, went to toronto summer of 2018 to visit my dad. Loved the city, had an amazing trip. The one thing i absolutely miss the most are the jamaican beef patties from randy's on eglinton. My gosh those were good... before i knew it i was gettin them by the dozen. Trully miss that place and its food

Man I miss NYC, such an amazing culture and way of life.

All this chatter about patties in America (NY). Go to Jamaica if you want to have a real patty. I'm a Jamaican who currently lives in America and Golden crust and whoever else does not compare to Tastee, Juicy Beef or Mother's (Real Jamaican Patty companies).

It's Authentic tho, its a Jamaican family, following a Jamaican recipe. i assume their spices and preparation style is what causes the difference. Despite that, Golden Crust is way more successful than any other Patty franchise.

Tastee is a Jamaican company? I didn't know that. They're good, but I found them nowhere near as good as from little Jamaican bakeries that I've been to in the Toronto area.

The Golden Crust CEO and that girl from the pizzeria has the right idea while most people are complaining cultural appropriation this gentrification they are thinking about expanding the authentic Jamaican experience to other people who have never ate before.

I love seeing people so passionate about food

Judnick is really smart, the point about wanting food Americanized rather than having it feel exotic is really good

Damn that food looks pretty good. Like a a great empanada. Having said that Clark Kent is elitist a all hell. Gatekeeping, calling people trash buyers. Man it's food and something to be enjoyed, no reason to look down on someone for preferring or buying a certain style.

I agree. To me, best way to have 100% authentic 24/7 is to be in the native country. At the end of the day, we are still making International food in the U.S. Not the same as having a Jamaican beef patty in Jamaica.

Started eating patties in The Bronx when I was a kid in the pizza shops. I’m an Irish kid that knows good food when I see it. I’ve had the mom and pop shop patties, I’ve had the Golden Krust and I’ve had em in the bodegas. It’s good food. I like mine with mozzarella, pepperoni and hot sauce.

I was born in NYC, and I had my fair share of beef patties. So did my dad who was born in India but lived in the city for many years. It truly does bring people together.

Im from Canada and I grew up eating spicy Jamaican patties everyday. One of the best to-go food for sure.

Man...when Upscale Vandal mentioned his relationship with the bodega and how you feel comfort there...I couldn't help but to think about Junior Guzman-Feliz. Rest in paradise young king. That shyt still hurts. I can't imagine how his family and friends feel. My bad...didn't mean to dampen the mood. I have 5 kids...2 of them are boys so it just hits close to home.

I've only had both the Golden Krust patties from the store, and then ones from school which (plot twist) were Golden Krust patties anyway the whole time. Let me say this - a true, unbiased opinion from someone who thought this for a long time before seeing the video - Golden Krust beef patties suck fucking dick I'm gonna try the real thing

And to the Jamaican patty purest, I understand his point of view. But the girl is correct, most Jamaicans probably don't know much about any other island outside of their own island. America is everyone. There are people from every single country here in the USA. It's a beautiful thing. Food brings people together. One Love. Jah Love 🤘🏼

As a born and raised Jamaican i can asure you that we learn about our neighboring islands and their history in school. But through highschool and now in college here in the states, no class has taught me anything about the islands. Not even Jamaica

I can say with zero uncertainty that Jamaicans are well aware of all of the isles and countries that surround them. They are fantastic exporters of West Indian and Caribbean cultures - a true melting pot.

I actually like it with the mozzarella cheese and coco bread!! ... PURE HEAVEN!! Curry chicken patties are damn good too!

This is a very good video about a street snack that I've enjoyed since the 1970's. The video doesn't just give the history of the beef patty in NY. It also explores the many ways that different people feel about the patty, and their various relationships to the beef patty and caribbean culture in general. It explores the dialectic between the caribbean community which has profoundly influenced NY culture for the past several decades, and the ways in which caribbean people have assimilated bits of the culture of their new home. The video shows that even something so commonplace and trivial as food can be used to ask some very important questions and maybe even to learn some very important truths. Finally, this video makes us ask if something so commonplace and trivial as street food can reveal so much cultural, sociological and political information, what other commonplace bits of popular culture are worth exploring with the same intelligence, and what nuggets of wisdom might those inquiries yield? As for my own opinion on one of the central questions explored in this video: There is no such thing as a bad beef patty, for the same reason as there is no such thing as bad sex. Even bad sex is still sex, so would you rather have bad sex or no sex? Nobody wants no sex! Even a bad beef patty is still a beef patty. Would you rather have a bad beef patty or no beef patty? Who would ever choose to not eat a beef patty if they had the opportunity? That's what I think about that!

Been eating oxtail and beef patties and doubles for the longest. Who doesn't know about this? Caribbean food is awesome. Wish I could go to the Pork Pit right now.
