Why THE IDOL Is SO Controversial

Ойын-сауық

I review, breakdown and explain The Idol Episode 1. I discuss the controversy behind the show which stars The Weeknd and Lily Rose Depp and react to everything that is wrong with it. I react to Sam Levison re-writing the show, the behind the scenes drama, the public response to the first episode and what can be expected for the rest of the season. I also give my theories and predictions for episode 2.

Once a show gets a cult following of hate watchers it never loses the controversy. The truth is I agree it came off as pointless and not much going on in a sense but there is something about it that made it feel like that's the point. It's hard to judge a show like that with 1 episode because we lack the context of the whole story.

I don't get why this show that calls out Hollywood and their exploitation of women gets so much hate when You have Euphoria, Elite, Sex Education, etc. that is set is in Schools with "minors". Like Jocelyn was old and mature enough, this has never been marketed towards minors. Also, Jocelyn was "exploited" not just for the sake of seeing her nude, but it adds to the plot, I don't get why people are pressed when there are tamed series like Suits(that sexualized Megan Markle for no reason). Even GOT had nude scenes that were unessesary to the plot. This show has never been marketed towards minors, and viewers' discretion was advised, but I don't get why people act like minors who can't distinguish between right and wrong, and what to copy or not. The fact that they made Abel ugly, creepy, rapey, and not handsome and charismatic says a lot. He was not the most dashing but he wasn't that ugly, they gave him a rat tail, his smile was creepy, he was dressed weirdly, and he was into some sketchy bar. Everyone can see that but the mentally unstable Jocelyn. The show itself wanted viewers to know that these kinds of men are preying on and exploiting mentally unstable women in Hollywood, so which part is the glorification?

I literally only checked it out for Jennie and you know the marketing team know that with how much they’re pushing her in the promos. Fuck, she barely has lines in it! 😭 Personally, hearing that they decided to reshoot it because it was veering into ‘the feminine perspective’ is just peak out of touch main character energy. Like god forbid a show called “The Idol” be about the actual female idol aka the lead. The things that they portray in the show are things that actually do happen in Hollywood and the industry, that's true. But they sexualize the characters so much to the point where it becomes uncomfortable and loses its value. Most of the time, during the first episode, they are talking about sex, saying/doing things with sexual connotations, walking around almost naked, or just straight-up having sex. And this is nothing new with Sam Levinsons' work, which is why everyone is so upset over it. His portrayals of nudity in the media are useless. They don't add anything to the story, and it doesn't actually play into portraying who a character is. It's fine if Lily's character is confident in her body and her sexuality, but Sam, using every chance he gets to just shoot scenes of her nips and genitalia just makes it come off as his own rap*y, t0rture p*rn fantasies with no real meaning.

Personally, I really enjoyed the first episode. I think the lack of drama or big events in it establishes an understanding for the main character's "normal". I don't know how the original director intended for the show to look but I like that Sam Levinson displays the reality of what's happening in a situation like this (the life a Hollywood star) instead of possibly imposing pointed views on it which would be confusing to watch since there is so many side characters to account for by nature of the main character's job. The reality of a woman in her position is that (however anti-feminist it appears) the idea of agency is very complex when there's so much money, pressure, trauma and ulterior motives surrounding your livelihood. I could be reading too much into it but I think that's portrayed pretty well when her personality and expressions make it seem like she's enjoying her choices but her coping mechanisms and constant second guessing of the people she keeps around her shows otherwise.

The show lacks writing that permits us to connect and care for the characters, sure it’s very entertaining and pleasing to the eye, but if we can’t connect or even relate emotionally to the character then it is simply eye candy, mindless entertainment, maybe that is the point, maybe the very people and industry this whole show is based on is a true to life representation of fucked up people who you can’t even feel sorry for. I honestly appreciate the neutral breakdown of the controversy. It really will depend on if they can pull a rabbit out of a hat and make this worth checking out. And while I will say pilots are usually the "weakest" episodes, they are supposed to be the thing that at least gets your attention and sets the tone. The fact that this is just good visuals and no actual story is really telling.

Ironic. The "Idol" that didn't get enough attention forced his way into the spotlight costing them million and causing some of their best creatives to leave the project. I never cared for the premise of this show. Will Sam be able to recover before the third season of Euphoria? I guess we'll find out. Truth of the matter is, he needs to give his characters a redemptive arch eventually. They can't wallow in sex, drugs, and mental illness forever. Like the Labrinth song suggests, his audience is getting tired.

The essence of the show really shows in those scenes with Jocelynn. The casting of Tetros feels very off while the rest of the show really exists flawlessly without him. The graphic scenes didn't shock me but felt extremely out of touch with actual sex. The way Tetros walked back in the room after they supposedly had sex, his skin, hair and clothes are almost intact. Perhaps because she only performed oral sex on him but the dirty talk was very porno like and sounded like a teenager trying to act grown. I don't follow the controversy but only give the show a chance. I think certain scenes (just like in Euphoria) are very powerful, like the one where Jocelyn breaks down midset.

Pushed its boundaries or… showing you a ‘close to reality’ to what life is like in Hollywood. 1.) Dodgy management surrounding the “superstar” who “handles” the artist and gaslights them to push their own agenda 2.) Selling sex - showing how directors/management push “stars” to cater to the male gaze because it “sells” and ultimately, gives them more money 3.) How unglamorous being a “star” is despite what we, viewing, are shown. 4.) pushing Hyper-sexuality 5.) what happens in an actual Ritual and initiation (Refrence: episode 1) Red dress, and weekend in black cape. Too much too soon.

Devil advocate here I don't think the show's take is bad. If this were a book it would be fine. I've read really weird and off putting books. If you find this show sick then avoid japanese literature. Even when a woman writes it, it can be rough. The point is we can't put our own sensibilities on a fictional story. We also can't call women victims when they don't see it as such. Lily is aware of what she signed up for. She stayed and if she didn't like it, she'd leave or not renew the contract. Also, stop watching and commenting on the show if it's that bad. When you complain you give it life. You keep it relevant.

Don’t judge her for being a good actress and taking the role… it’s what the great ones do and do it well.. So while it’s hard to watch at times especially if you have a daughter like myself, I have to respect her craft.. Now will I keep my daughter far away from the show yes, of course, it’s an adult show.. This first show was cheesy in a few ways but the narrator is correct, it’s what made folks jump on her and how could she play a role like this and all of its graphic nature..but the story is now growing to many layers.. I think it’s written and done very well at this point.. If you done drugs are had glimpses of fame in your history you can understand the scenes and their realities

I completely disagree with the negative reviews and criticisms of the show. I think Levinson is a genius and the show was a masterpiece. While I understand the criticisms that the show was too sexist, too homophobic, had too much sex, was too much like a music video, too Hollywood, I agree, it was all those things. But it was still a great show and definitely had SUBSTANCE. Watching the main character (Jocelyn) navigate past trauma, a career block, manipulative friends, and an abusive relationship are all universal themes I could relate to even though I don't live in a 10,000 sq ft Hollywood mansion. Not to mention the performance by the Weeknd (Tedros) was incredible. He was an extremely complicated interesting character that both the hero and the villain of the show. I think TV shows are supposed to push the boundaries and break the rules to be entertaining. If anything, being "controversial" is what makes it interesting. To negatively criticize or discredit a show because it's not politically correct or offends people is completely erroneous.

its hard to imagine a beautiful, talented artist like Jocelyn would even look at the unattractive, boring & creepy Tedros. As usual we are encouraged to salaciously watch Jocelyn dress scantily, act provocatively and perform for a man. Why is he covered up? it further compounds that its up to females to stay slim/be beautiful/sexy etc. There's way too much pressure on women and the obsession with appearance and pleasing men, to add this t*rture p*rn with so little substsnce is unnecessary. whilst Abel makes brilliant music & the soundtrack good, the acting aint great but that is the dialogue also. Lily Rose is stunning and hard to take your eyes off. She is talented and i believe she will continue in an upward trajectory if she picks good projects.

It’s not is the easy answer. People are lazy and thirsty for cancel culture and we don’t have anything to whine about. I mean I just watched a British show that had pretty much the same premise as the beginning of that first episode. I hate suzie I would argue from a disaster pov is worse. People don’t look beyond easy stuff anymore tbh. I’m not sure this is a good show but neither are you. You have no idea where any of this is going, what the point of it is, what the goals are. I’d argue it did a very good job of depicting Hollywood crisis mode, of examining mental illness and image, and even body autonomy in a clever, expose hypocrisy way. I’d argue the aesthetics are very selective and purposeful. I’d argue the weekend dynamic is set up by a spiraling girl desperate for attention and to be told she’s good. I’d argue flawed people make flawed choices. And I’d argue the show very directly tells you everything it wants to be. It’s going for a Britney/x Tina doc mixed with basic instinct mixed with a dash of some of the a24 stuff. If you don’t aren’t intrigued by that you shouldn’t watch. And you shouldn’t comment. But to everyone whining about male gaze and what not. Those are conscious choices made by artists and collaborators. That will be revealed to house a mostly toxic environment and story I imagine. It’s ok to paint ugliness and push exploration of darkness. We don’t need everything to fit some puritanical homogenous structure. And we shouldn’t want that.
