Unless you're the director, horror usually leads to more horror. Which she did in things like "Don't Breathe". At the time she was the biggest name in the movie since she was on cult hit "Suburgatory". It's not like she disappeared though. She just finished the run in "Zoey's Extraordinary Playlist" which was really well liked and she got some award nominations for that so she's still doing good work.

Jane Levy was terrific in this, and it was obviously a hugely physically-demanding shoot for her. The practical effects were incredible, and incredibly hard to watch. I would argue its what actually made Evil Dead unique and not just another horror shlock. When I saw this movie it was so by the books. It was just another hardcore horror film to be forgotten. I absolutely loved the remake, super bloody and gritty an overall "dirty" feel without going all Rob Zombie on it lol. Also, now that I'm a recovering alcoholic I can appreciate the addiction struggle even more now in this film. Ash or no Ash this is a great entry in Evil Dead imo.
Saw this in a packed theater with a ton of friends (some very familiar with Evil Dead, others fresh to the series) as a 16 year old. It was an utter blast, everyone had a great time
The uncut version is by far the best and was what was advertised in the red band trailers. I love these movies and this remake did a great job, now we have another story in the evil dead verse.
So the ending with Mia seemingly being posessed I read as Mia being changed in the same way Ash was. Yes she's no longer prisoner to the forces that aided in losing her friends and family, but she has been so fundamentally changed that she isn't Mia anymore, at least mot the Mia we saw in the beginning just like Ash.

"If you can, leave your thoughts below" My thoughts: I really appreciate the work you put out. Your approach and analysis are always thoughtful and often insightful in a manner that expands my understanding of a work's place in the genre. Thank you
I like where they're going with Evil Dead Rise beccause it's a pretty interesting look at how the evil, by the design of the book, can be summoned by anyone anywhere and it also breaks away from the cabin in the woods trope by bringing the evil to an urban setting. People may have liked the goofiness of the original, but I remembered being terrified of the deadites, growing up. To be honest, I would say that it was my first experience of childhood trauma and also my first peregrination into zombie fiction. The lore of the deadites and zombies aren't entirely the same, but I still thought of them as zombies, for some reason. There was something I found haunting about zombies and it took me years and dozens of zombie shows and movies to really understand it. The reason I used to find them terrifying wasn't just the fact that they're supposed to be inanimate upon death and they're not, it's that they're not necessarily human anymore. They're puppets or costumes inhabited by something else. The thing that killed zombie lore for me was when people tried to humanize zombies and add scientific explanations to legendary creatures. You never do that to creatures from folklore. If you know anything about the beings, you'll know how to fight them, which kills the horror and makes the story a horror-themed fantasy. Not only that, but everyone had they're own zombie lore that ultimately rendered the subgenre stale. If you're going to make a movie about a pandemic, why put zombies in it? It Comes At Night brilliantly subverted the expectation that there was a disease-spreading beast or some kind of zombie lurking outside of the house only for there to be no such creature. It reminded me a lot of Mask of the Red Death. There was a paranoid atmosphere and you were never sure who was going to be next. Zombie fiction, on the other hand, had become pretty predictable in regard to its plot because you already knew there was going to be a zombie.
It was an incredible reboot, and I'm to this day stunned that people don't bring it up more than people do.
Great in-theater experience. Amazing opening sequence that set the tone for the rest of the film. It just doesn't let up.
I loved this movie. Honestly, I felt like the gore did sometimes lean into its own kind of camp. It was brutal yet somehow never felt like torture porn. Also, I'm pretty sure in the original *The Evil Dead* the book was called the Naturom Demonto as well. Raimi changed it to the Necronomicon in the sequel when he found out that the name was in the public domain.
This is probably one of my all-time favorite horror movie remakes. One of the few horror movies to actually keep me up at night
I own the uncut version of this film and it is absolutely terrific. I remember watching it 3 times in theaters just mind blown, on how a remake can be so damn good. Evil Dead 2013 is a rare breed, and I loved every minute of it.
For me I like to think that, much like the Puzzel Boxes in Hellraiser, there are multiple Books bound in flesh that are connected to The Dark Ones but are each bound to different demons. We know the Necronomicon Ex Mortis is connected to the Kandarian Demon while the Naturom Demonto is connected to The Abomination.

The "infects those trying to help" statement hit a little close to home. Though in my case, it is mental illness, not drug abuse. And the statement about dementia ALSO hits close to home as me, my sister, and my mom take care of my bedridden father who suffers from dementia Also, the rename of the book is actually reverting it to what it was in the original. Evil Dead II renamed it Necronomicon Ex-Mortis

Apparently there's an animated series in the works picking up from where Season 3 left off...
I was originally pissed there was no Ash, but after finishing it I was in love. It's splattery, but uses lighting and practical makeup to make EXTREMELY creepy scenes that are deeply unsettling and uncomfortable. This is the pinnacle of the horror elements in Evil Dead, and as much as I want to give the next movie a chance I don't believe that any more entries will ever live up to The remake
When I first watched it on release I was underwhelmed, but as time went on I came to love it. The Evil “entering” her in the thorn bush was excruciatingly brilliant homage to the Banned scene of the original.
One thing I remember sticking out to me was that the scene with the girl sticking her head out of the trap door/basement and singing a twisted nursery rhyme from the trailers was cut for the final film, and for some reason that disappointed me at the time.
In fairness the book was stored in a hidden (as you said) basement. That's why none of the character had experiences with the demons in the previous years.
New thumbnail design is looking slick dude! I hope it helps grab some more folks!
Just watched Evil Dead Rise and while I did like it, I prefer the 2013 movie. I feel like "Rise" was held back by having children centered as the ones dealing with the demon. Throughout the entire movie I already knew nothing was going to happen to the youngest daughter because-of course, right? 2013 also has better scares and kills in my opinion.

Yes. Same. Plus the trailers showed her escaping with the daughter so I knew nothing would happen. I don't think it went far enough. Mia got stabbed multiple times and had to lose her hand in that final epic fight in the blood rain. The finale in Rise was fun but the music was nowhere near as epic and it didn't feel like she went through as much. The most brutal scenes happened after they were already possessed.

Unlike a lot of movies that are labeled "underrated" but are actually very popular, evil dead 2013 is actually insanely underrated, nobody talked about this movie until the new one was announced, and absolutely loved every second of it.

Saw most of this a LONG time ago when someone else happened to be watching it. Weirdly enough the way the deadites move is what got to me the most. Not the the fact that the creature was stabbing the guy over and over again in the eye, but I was more bothered by HOW she was doing it.
love your channel. this is one my first fav horror movies and i love to hear someone just talk about it for a bit. i’m trying to share it with my friends now
Just saw Evil Dead Rise last night and it made me want to rewatch the remake. Perfect timing!
The reason I've always had in my mind as the cause for Ash's return to the cabin in Dead 2: Since the Evil caught Ash at the end of 1, it possessed him and wiped his memory of the events of 1. It makes him go about his normal life, while finding new victims to bring back to the cabin again to repeat Ash's torment. Fragments of his subconscious memory of 1 start bleeding through, causing Ash's personality to slowly change from timid and cowardly to bolder and more aggressive towards the deadites. Because the demonic presence realizes at the end of 2 that Ash's subconscious will is too strong in the present (plus all the fancy modern day toys), they send him to the past where it thinks he may be more vulnerable, starting the events of AOD.
I think many of us forget that the original Evil Dead was definitely intended as a straight jorror. Many of the more humorous elements were form Evil Dead 2. So I was all in for a more horrific version. After I got over feeling bummed we didn't get more Ash. So happy I own this and curious how Rise plays out.
This movie is one of my comfort watches, ironically. Its so good, and always manages to captivate me and distract me. I was so happy to see you do a video on it, being that I also adore watching / listening to your video essays at work. Thank you Ryan, as always ♥

The Evil Dead remake is PHENOMENAL. As a standalone, or as a sequel, a reimagining, doesn't matter. That ending scene where Mia rips her hand off and then chainsaws the demons face and body in half. MY GOD that is just pure cinematic terror and bliss.

FYI there are 3 volumes to the book of the dead. One in the 1981 film, one in evil dead 2013, one in Evil Dead Rise. This is referenced in Army of Darkness.
I went into this movie without any consensus or reviews and I loved it. I remember that I then went to the forum for it on IMDb (so, yeah, this was back when they had those) and I was genuinely shocked that every post was trashing it. I sometimes don't form opinions right away about movies, but this one time when I was confident that this film was groovy. And rewatches have only assured me my initial reaction was right.
Just got back from seeing Evil Dead Rise, it was amazing! some great homages while still staying true to it's own story, alot like Evil Dead 2013. By the way, have you seen the movie "Men"? I'd love to hear you do a video essay on that. Keep up the awesome content!

Many many many people love this movie. It has eventually developed into a classic of Horror imo. To me it was the best horror film to come out in the 2010s and that says a lot cause the 2010s had a lot of great horror movies.
I disliked the remake tbh. I feel the remake, despite the creator saying it's closer to his original vision, is very much a product of the time it was made. It just feels like so many other movies that came out around the time and I don't really like many horror movies of that period.
Naturom Demonto was actually the name of the book in the original Evil Dead. It wasn't until the sequels that it got re-named to the Necronomicon Ex Mortis.
Evil Dead (2013) I would consider to be one of the best horror movies in recent years. It is legitimately terrifying and is a horror film that also tries to be a good movie while also being incredibly violent. Usually I’m not a fan of excessively violent horror films because the crew of such films don’t usually put as much effort into the rest of the movie as they do the gore. This one however I feels gives us it’s all on each and every front.
Such an underrated film. Fans should have embraced it.
I'm always surprised people liked this one so much. I could never get over the basement. The whole premise of bringing Mia to an isolated cabin to kick her drug habit was brilliant -- I was totally on board. She could scream and fret over all manner of demonic things and people would either chalk it up to her being nuts or just trying to convince them to take her back to the city so she could get high again! HOWEVER, given that this place is supposed to be a Summer Home her family used to visit... finding not only a blood stain under a rug that leads to a cellar door, but a ROOM FULL OF DEAD CATS HANGING FROM THE CEILING, I think any reasonable person would decide "Hey guys, maybe this place isn't very safe for any of us, let alone someone who should be in as comfortable a situation as possible so that she doesn't miss her drugs..." And on top of that, that nerdy guy going to all that trouble to cut the barbed wire, unwrap the garbage bag, and then mark/scribble on top of the words that the book repeatedly insists he doesn't read... There is always a bit of a logic leap with these things... you have to suspend your disbelief... but this was all several steps too far for me. On top of that, I didn't care for anyone except Mia and her brother -- it was all just "My character is here to be butchered!" in the end.

Eric clearly didn't wanna be there, he didn't give a shit about mia. He clearly resented David as well. You get the impression he was jealous of David in the past. And then he finds the book. The book entranced him, he couldn't take his eyes off it. He was happy to find something interesting to take his mind off why they were really there. He was a skeptic and logical person but this book challenged that, and his dumb ass pushed it to far and brought out the evil. His own arrogance or the evil manipulating him... either way he was an easy target. this is why he gets inflicted the most pain out of anyone else , poor guy got mangled but he did come around and try to get David to at least make it out.

Thats pretty much how I felt. Thought the premise was great and made sense, but after that just couldnt get into it. I've watched it twice thinking maybe I wasn't in the mood the first time, but no, felt the same after viewing it again. I really wanted to like it too.
Great video and maybe the best thumbnail you’ve ever had. Keep it up
one of my favorite parts of the evil dead 2013 and also the evil dead rise is how every weapon and kill has a nod that occurs to it somewhere earlier in the movie, ranging from showing the chainsaw in the shed, the electric turkey cutter being used to cut a roast, to using the nail gun to do some home repairs. very clever
this movie is so underrated. Everyone just refused to enjoy it because they were such big fans of the original
Hell yes, wildly under rated movie. I absolutely adore the original trilogy but I still can recognize how fantastic this movie was. I hope more people give it a chance now that Rise is killing it in ratings.
I remember seeing this in the theater and the reactions of everyone during the electric knife scenes!
This is one of my favorite films, full stop. As a longtime fan of the originals, I was keeping my expectations in check for this one. But Jane Levy’s performance-even in just the trailer-got under my skin in such a way that I couldn’t help but be optimistic. Caught it opening night upon release, and I truly loved it in a way I didn’t think was possible. The tonal shift worked wonders for this in my opinion, as the lack of overt humor really brought the profound spiritual terror to another level. What scared me the most were the switches in personality in the deadites, those moments of seeming clarity when you’re never quite sure if the victim is truly back in control or if it’s the demon sadistically manipulating those around it. Natalie’s “David… why are you hurting me?” cut me deeeep. And the gambit of Mia going through detox and the group agreeing to ride it out with her was brilliant, such a perfect way of establishing their doubt of the reality of the situation and refusal to get out of Dodge the moment things went sideways without requiring too much suspension of disbelief. All in all, this one turned out infinitely better than I had hoped.
I personally didnt care for this movie. It didnt have that Evil Dead vibe that we come to know and love with Bruce Campbells charm and goofiness he brings to the movies. If I wanted a hardcore horror film I'd watch something other than Evil Dead. I think the grotesque horror mixed with comedy is what MAKES Evil Dead so unique and not just another gore fest.
I really really like this remake. The ridector knew that the original have his own charm, so he put a whole new tone to the remake. And I also like how this movie is like his own genre. It fells like an epic horror. The acting, production, set pieces and, specially, the score, made this movie feels like a epic. So good.
Couldnt agree more, i saw it on the big screen and loved it. So brutal and exhausting in the best way
So stoked to see you made a video about this remake! It is the only horror film I've seen where the characters weren't idiotic. Their smart decisions failing = great writing and an infinitely more scary film.
Personally I was never all that into gore and the reason I adored Evil dead was because although it did have that, it also had great charm and of course Campbell, who held the whole thing together imo. To be frank the sequels did nothing for me except flag up how good the originals were. They were also a child of it's time and so to endlessly drag the 'corpse' of the original round, dressing it up to appeal to a 'modern' audience just seems daft to me at least, so no, I doubt If I'll be watching the newest incarnation. And yes, I bloody hated the 2013 version. lol
Honestly, the remake was not very good. The writing was awful which made the characters unlikeable in stark contrast to the original movies. The cinematography and effects were fine but the story & twist was very predictable once you realized they were just making a standard 2010s-era horror movie full of tropes and a standard issue last girl scenario. If it had better writing & characters and was made as a standalone film with an evil dead theme rather than a remake then it would have been far better. But as it stands the "mixed or average reviews" assessment is fairly accurate IMO.

I did not like the remake either... highly overrated..
Loving the new thumbnails, Ryan!
When this movie first came out, some people were bashing on it for being so different from the original*, I also had plenty of late 2000's horror remakes fresh in my mind like The Thing 2011, Nightmare on Elm Street and Friday the 13th so I simply wrote it off and didn't see it until a year or so later when the discussion surrounding this movie changed to being insanely positive. *At the time I frequented a very small circle of people with... Questionable opinions, to say the least. Even my mental health improved significantly by leaving and ignoring those people. I saw it and I never expected this movie to be so damn good! I was absolutely blown away for the minimal usage of CGI and how batshit crazy it was despite the gritty and serious tone of it. Ryan is not exaggerating by saying that he can't show a single thing from the ending, because there is a literal rain of blood. I need to rewatch this movie sometime soon, I love it!
That movie sucks
I disagree with your premise, the movie is not incredible, it is a terrible remake that captures no magic of the original.
10:49 it was always given the name Naturom Demonto in the original, it wasn't until Evil Dead 2 it was named the Necronomicon at the very start.
My favorite horror movie of all time. I am so happy to see 2013’s Evil Dead getting this much love.
A "perfect" remake? It's a worse remake AND movie than either the Friday the 13th remake or the Crazies remake. This channel has gotten so pretentious and contrarian 😮💨

Because he doesn't agree with your opinion? Now THAT is pretentious.
