Why the Dathomiri Nightsisters were "Tolerated" by the Jedi Order

Ойын-сауық

The Jedi Order orthodoxy has always been militantly against any force sect that taps into or uses dark side force energy. Yet for some reason they've always looked the other way when it came to the Nightsisters of Dathomir, who use a darkside magical ichor. We take a look at why the Jedi gave the Dathomiri Witches a pass from extermination.

Well, from what I heard, the Nightsisters also got scars from their usage of the darkside, and one Nightsisters Clanleader tried to ban it, and saw those darkside scars as signs of shame, whereas Mother Talzin interpreted them as a sign of of honour, like stretchmarks. And the nightsisters had a very powerful skill, The "Bloodtrail", which allowed the nightsister to know the position of anyone who got their blood on their clothing. That among other reasons was a point, why they were highly prized as bounty hunters, and they sold themselves out to the highest bidder. They also could craft powerful totems and talismans, and harness the power of the living force, in order to gain its powers, by drawing on animals, plants, or any other living lifeform, allowing them to neutralize or fabricate poison (as long as it´s "natural", I cannot imagine Cyclone B coming from a nightsister, more like a irukandanji jellyfish´s poison), among other things, or healing illnesses by harnessing the Power of immune animals.

Keeping the Night sisters around is also an early warning system, there is no way the Sith would ever allow them to stay, Even hiding himself Sidious made moves to remove them.. and had always planned to remove them, even though he could've ignored them also. The Jedi thinking the sith would come back in force would likely wipe them out before they attacked the republic.

"Ventress, now once again on the light side of the Force,[54] died in Vos' arms. Several months later, he and Obi-Wan took her body back to Dathomir where she was laid to rest[4] alongside her sisters[55] in the waters of her village, making tendrils of green mist rise. Vos, followed shortly afterward by Kenobi, began to hear the whispers of the Nightsisters' voices, welcoming their lost sister back home. In fact, as Vos reached out in the Force to say goodbye to Ventress one last time, he thought he could make out the word "sister."[4] Her yellow lightsaber was laid to rest with her.[48]" I think we may see Asajj Ventress again because of where she was buried and how those waters are used by the witches of Dathomir to heal. A purposeful plot hole if you will.

The funny thing is that Dathomir and force witches were originally introduced in 1994 with the novel, 'The Courtship of Princess Leia.' The novel takes place in 8 ABY, or 4 years after the last of the original series. They were not wiped out in the Clone Wars; that is a more recent rewrite altogether. It's very surreal to have been deeply into the 90's expanded universe Star Wars novels, only to come back 20 years later and have everything retconned to this degree. Then again, I'm not suggesting every change is for the worse, because it isn't. It's just very weird. Imagine revisiting Harry Potter 10 years from now, and it turns out everything after the second novel is considered non-canon, and the main trio spend most of the latter novels recruiting an army in the new world.

@@Klaaism Clone Wars does imply that, but since then a lot of the Legends content has been restored to canon and thus there are other clans of witches elsewhere on Dathomir. Which is actually actually a retcon that makes complete sense, because a planet is a really f-ing big place. Predatory wildlife aside, Dathomir isn't *that* inhospitable, so it makes perfect sense that more than just one small part of the planet is inhabited. We simply only ever saw that one part of Dathomir because the Nightsisters were the only Dathomirians who had any impact on the rest of the galaxy. Neither the Jedi nor the Sith particularly cared about other isolated tribes that were hiding in the jungle doing nothing. Also, there actually *were* still survivors from Talzin's clan, though you could count them on the fingers of one hand.

Most of the Legends content about Dathomir has been retconned back into the new canon. The fallen Jedi Allya was brought back as the original founder of all the witches, and other clans including Singing Mountain are around elsewhere on Dathomir. They just weren't involved in the plot because they're all in isolated parts of Dathomir minding their own business during the Clone Wars. Light side oriented witches believe that Allya turned back to the light before her death (though she still didn't have anything good to say about Jedi), while Nightsisters believe that claim is fake news. It's entirely possible that at some point Gethzerion's clan of new Nightsisters will also be restored to canon in the future.

I think the introduction of the Nightsisters into the SW universe in The Clone Wars was fascinating and I've always felt like Lucasfilm should do a series about them or at least one of them such as Merrin. Ventress was one of my favorite characters in TCW series and while 'Dark Disciple' was a well done book, I think they wasted potential by killing her off. With Disney so crazy about strong female lead characters, Ventress would have been an excellent choice as the main character of a series, and they would have had a logical way to explore Sith, Nightsister and Jedi stories due to her history. But with her gone, I'd like to see more about Merrin. Yet in the trailers from Jedi Survivor, she'd not shown, which perhaps will get addressed in the upcoming book that takes place between Fallen Order and Survivor, but no matter what they decide, we need to see more Nightsisters!

Merrin is a very powerful force sensitive nightsister that was empowered by the matriarchs. Normal nightsisters are empowered by the few Jedi Master level Matriarchs like Talzin. The matriarchs pass their power onto the other force sensitive sisters when they die. Merrin is the last sister alive in her clan, she is very powerful.

She was definitely able to use her abilities off of Dathomir and her powers have the same green ichor as any other nightsister even while not on Dathomir. There is no explanation for this other than that maybe as the last of her kind she can remain connected to that power anywhere in the galaxy, but that is never explicitly stated.

Good points! We also must remember by this period the Jedi were fully intergraded into the political system of the Republic. This is why the Jedi also allowed the Hutts to practice slavery and did not intervene to free slaves which they felt was a necessary evil to exist in order to prevent an unnecessary war between the Republic and the Hutts. The night sisters were an isolationist society and their planet Dathomir was so remote it had no interest from the Republic nor was it a threatening power so it would have been seen as another unnecessary conflict if the Jedi were to fight the night sisters. Since the Ruusan Reformation people in the galaxy including the generations of jedi during that period did not experience large galactic conflicts and wars all until up to clone wars. As much as possible they tried to avoid it by sacrificing their own principles!

One thing to remember, is that the Nightsisters were one of many tribes on the planet and they hinestly couldnt tell the difference between them. All Dathomiri had similar customs and what not, but only the night sisters actually practiced techniques that were sith related like alchemy. Twchnically they were witches and the jedi only really go nuts when its a Dark Jedi (as in a memeber of their order fell to the dark side) or the Sith Order. There were others, like the sorcers of the Tund, who were mostly darksiders and sith renegades, but since they never went full Sith, they were tolerated and even worked with the jedi kind of. There was also a cult dedicated to revan in Legends that Still existed intil they were hunted as part of order 66 and one of them joined Lukes new jedi order Edit:Also yes the Jedi kind of forgot about them. Palpatine in both canons didnt know about them. He thought they were just darksiders on Dathomir and didnt really connect them to being a seperate school of thought. In Legends, he only met Mauls mother so he had no idea she was part of a wider network of philosophy.

Loved this video. I have a thought as well in regard to why the Jedi did not bother with the Nightsisters. We all know that the Jedi are responsible for the creation or rise of the Sith in a sense. I also feel that the Jedi may be indirectly or directly responsible for the creation of the Nightsisters. I think the difference in the two is that the Sith grew to rival the Jedi where the Nightsisters did not (as you have stated). But I also believe the Jedi do not want to acknowledge their responsibility in the creation of another dark side faction of force users. I think this would cause individuals to distrust their teachings including the people of the Republic. I believe citizens of the Republic would look at the Jedi in this manner: "If they are sworn to protect us, why are they helping create the very organizations that threaten us?" I believe ignoring the issue to a degree also keeps other Jedi away from being too curious about the organization and learning more from it. We know from lore that various Jedi left the Order to recreate the Sith. Maybe the Jedi were afraid of something similar happening if they put more focus into the Nightsisters.

There so many things that I never would have thought to do, until someone told me not to do it. Then I got curious, and things went down hill from there. The point I'm trying to make is, if you're going to forbid something, provide a detailed explanation on why such a thing is a really bad idea. I think that I read a Star Wars book, where Darth Sidious wrote (I'm paraphrasing) "Any forbidden knowledge, is usually worth knowing." I don't know if he's actually right, but I still tend to agree with the sentiment.

I've often had a similar question: Suppose a Jedi turns to the Dark side or just starts using Dark side powers and refuses to stop. However, unlike so many other fallen Jedi, this one DOES NOT join the Sith. They continue to serve the Republic but just in a more extreme way. Maybe they leave the Jedi and act as a Mercenary/Bounty Hunty or some other form of independent contractor. After all, just because someone turns to the Dark Side does not automatically mean that they switch sides and join the Sith Empire. How would the Jedi deal with such an individual since they can't justifiably kill them? It seems like the answer to this question regarding the Night Sisters sort of provides a solution in that it seems to primarily depend on the threat level, though I would like to hear if anyone else has something to add to this.
