Why the cruise industry is the fastest growing tourism sector | Transforming Business

The cruise industry is the fastest growing tourism sector, expected to generate over 30 billion dollars in revenue this year. With close to 36 million passengers taking a cruise holiday in 2024, we showcase the world’s largest cruise ship Icon of the Seas and speak to the world’s leading cruise company. And we question what, literally, powers all this razzmatazz.

I feel like so many people are wholly uneducated when it comes to regulations around shipping. The shipping industry has incredibly stringent rules and practices to follow through SOLAS, MARPOL and now the IMO is starting to come down hard on emissions. Just like all other sectors, we are trying to reduce our emissions through various environmental systems installed onboard. EGRs, SCRs, EGS- cruise ships are an easy target, but they are not the whole problem.

Hard to take DW News seriously when it doesn't have an accurate map(2:22). Port Everglade is in Fort Lauderdale not Fort Myer. The result would show that 8.6M passengers sail out of Greater Miami . I don't trust their results if they don't do the most basic fact checks. Other issue is they did not provide citation for the data, was that before Marine Fuel standard being updated 2020. The comparison is not valid if it use pre-2020 data...the article also missed the importance of converting ports to using shore power. This is an editorial piece long on green morality, light on actual cited facts.

I don't get it, if you're paying to visit an entertainment city that swims.....why not just fly to an actual entertainment city on land like lets say Las Vegas etc and probably spend less. I mean with ships that massive there's no point in being on a ship anymore.

You unpack once & most things are included at differing price points. Your food costs for three meals at restaurants will cover the cost of the cruise, especially if you eat in the full-service dining rooms. The accommodation & activities are effectively free; the growth of the industry supports the economics of the business model.

The formula changes significantly when you have a concentration of people/emissions. Also consider that 97% of the passengers would have flown to the departure point creating much more CO2 emissions. Aside from that, not sure why anyone would want to holiday in a Petrie dish of 7000 people - a 2000 pax ship would be the sweet spot for me if I ever wanted to cruise again

Also don't forget to include that every country tries citizens are responsible for what they consume from another countries exports to them. Easy to say that China or India pollute the most but we all buy their goods. Even just part of their goods on the production line of a finished product. We should always take that on board. The average mainland Chinese use a fraction of what the West does in terms of emissions. Well literally every country does besides the West. I'm from Australia. We are shocking as well.

The cruise ship is just a microcosm of a portion of greater society. It's concentrated consumption with an exaggerated carbon footprint. It's no worse than owning a yacht, private jet, space tourism. It's appealing because you travel mostly at night while you sleep, wake up in a new port almost everyday, unpack once, food & accommodation are included & are more than adequate, & you can be as busy or relaxed as you choose.

I actually cruise quite often. And I am vegan and it is very frustrating. Because they talk about sustainability. But yet almost every food they serve has dairy in it. Which is one of the worst contributors to greenhouse gas emissions.... I even have trouble finding almond milk for my coffee in the morning. They keep it under-the-counter. If they were serious about sustainability they would put it out and promote it.... Also, the health consequences of ridiculous amounts of butter and cheese they put in all their food they are literally killing their passengers.....

right, everything that is for the masses of people is friendly to the environment. Private yachts, private planes...it's more harmful (like comparing a car with a bus). Did Barcelona ban yachts - no. The point is to deprive the little man of every pleasure in life.
