Many cruise ships are registered to the Bahamas or Panama to get the international and labour laws loophole. There are no illegal immigrants and almost no labour laws either since it is not a registered US ship.

On MSC cruise ships, they work 9 months with no break. Madness!!! I always make sure that I am nice to them. They are incredibly hard workers.

I used to be a cruise agent, responsible for the worker on the ships and their immigration documents, communication with authorities, logistics, etc. It was a fancy position, but legit one of the worst jobs I have ever had, it was miserable. This industry is borderline modern-day slavery and gluteny, as well as extreme ecological hazard. It is quite an amazing experience to be in one of those ships, but at the same time it feels almost nightmarish.

One has to be really strong in the head to not break down doing the same job over and over again for long hours in tight spaces. Especially those in the lower decks, like the butchers, where there are no windows.

I work at a restaurant as a chef and our head chef has been on one of those during his early career years. I love to listen to his stories from the ship, it is fascinating that they produced so much in very limited spaces. And cruise ship kitchen staff work 14 hour days... not 10-12

7 day cruise, 7500 passengers, average cost of $1500(you have to factor in balconies, suites, variable pricing) is $11,250,000 in gross revenue for rooms. Now take into account royal Caribbean says customers spend roughly $100 per day as well. That’s another 5mil right there. If they’re spending 7-8mil per cruise to operate, they’re still making 5-6mil per cruise easily after any taxes and port fees easily. I’m strongly believe I’m underestimating how much net profit they’re making. I’m sure it’s much more

@@purpjones1033if we assume the math there is roughly accurate it would only be 4 years to recoup the initial cost of the ship. it’ll run for far longer than that (20+ years) based on all that, you’d profit something like $4 billion over a conservative 20 year lifespan for the ship

If you watch someone like WanderlustAlley, there's a video where she interacts with crew from other countries and they say the salary is still several times higher than working in their own country. It's not mistreatment to not pay a non-American the American minimum wage. That doesn't even make sense.

the ship itself is an engineering wonder, and the management of resources is mind blowing. But all i can think of is how they should pay their people more and give them vacation days.

Same here. Engineering marvels, sailing under flags of convenience so they can have the cheapest possible crew expense. IDK, my overall impression of these monsters is, "Wow.... (pause) YUCK!". I mean, why even build a ship? Why not just build another hotel in Vegas?

@@shaggybreeks There are many good answers to that question e.g., you cannot move a hotel or restaurant, but you can send a cruise-hotel with multiple restaurants all around the world. Cruise-ships are bigger than most hotels and restaurants on land and offer more products, services, amenities, options, and excursions than the ones on land. There are many more categories of guest-room on a large modern cruise-ship than there are in any hotel. E.g., a hotel tends to be in one category or another and every room is priced accordingly, but a cruise-ship allows luxury-classes, mid-range classes, and low-price categories all in one moving hotel-island.

I very much like that while these were made into independent videos a while back, when you compiled them, you changed the order of footage, used new stuff we hadn't seen before, and made a new voiceover, instead of just stringing the videos like most channels do. We like to see that extra effort, makes the video very entertaining.

Much respect to all the workers. I am sure they are all overworked and underpaid. Regardless, the workers are very kind and always smile while they work hard to provide to their families abroad. So many moving parts and it’s wild how massive these ships have gotten to handle so many guests.

Even though the workers are overworked, underpaid, and have low working conditions, I appreciate their hardwork that sails thousands of passengers across the sea smoothly.

i remember when i was like 12 i went into the liberty of the seas with my family , great experience and i was overwhelmed by the scale of everything. now royal caribbean cruise ships have gotten way more bigger and complex and now i'm more amazed by the whole magic going inside the ship to keep the equation running.

I had the pleasure of going on the harmony of the seas ship for a week and I have to say that they are incredible, however it becomes very clear who is what, what I mean is that the people with higher class tickets act a lot different to the more normal middle class people and I saw multiple people being very mean to the workers who clearly worked extremely hard every day. Either way it was worth the money but like one of the employees funnily enough said “money money money, it’s so funny, in a rich man’s world”

I think that the sheer size and separate sections and amenities for suites mean that you would not even see many of the guests that are paying for premium classes of guestrooms. I can also say from experience that there are badly behaved average people and some friendly and generous wealthy ones. Not least of all because most high-income households nowadays earned their way, rather than inherited it. You would not even know how wealthy many people are. Or how poor a lot of flamboyant folks are.

I used to work on one of these. I feel bad for some of the crew who work 10-14 hr shifts making as little as $600/Week with no days off 😌. These companies get away with the US Laws by registering their vessels in Bahamas, Panama, Liberia etc..

@@Sean-ds3br Yep, their pay seems abysmal by American standards but is generally quite good compared to their home countries. They also don’t spend much while on the ship, allowing them to save a lot of the money instead of spending it on things like rent and other bills. However the hours are very long and it’s very tiring.

Wow, I never want to go on a huge cruse like that, but seeing the logistics of how the ship runs is fascinating. Like a self-contained city at sea

It is a weird experience. To almost be treated as royalty by people that are skimping by on less than minimum wage. I didn't like the experience to be honest. I didn't have the right level of greed I think. I am too humble. 😕

@@fitybux4664 thats why they get tips, theres around 4000 people on these large ships and most give tips that are split between everyone plus you can always give more. I always give extra generous tips when I go and leave notes and a great review to help them out.

The amount of work the staff, chefs and crew do to keep the ship running is really admired, their work needs to be appreciated and honestly it's the true meaning of hard work

I tested positive when I went on a Royal Caribean cruise quite a few months ago. The room service was great, I got my own room, and nurses came twice a day to check up on me. They were very sweet. I got complimentary WIFI, too. We were also refunded for the 3 days I had to be in quarantine.

I've just been on Liberty of the Seas for a 4-day cruise. Despite some hiccups, it was a dream. The staff always friendly and polite. The food exceptional. And Coco Cay incredible. Looking forward for the Wonder of The Seas, as soon as we are financially recovered.

@@Tylorgng. Not at all... The only times we saw crowds were on the entrance of the night shows at the theaters. Even there, the lines were fast, no hassle. At the fancy restaurants, yes - people at the door waiting, but not crowded. At the self-service restaurants, a lot of people, but magically, always tables available, and quick lines for the food. I suspect that during all these years they figured it out how to manage 4-6 thousand people on a boat.

4 months cooking everyday all day. Man shout out to those chefs that’s the real heroes. I couldn’t imagine how stressful that job is

If you go on a cruise please consider giving a tip to those people who give you a great experience. The average worker on ship make less than 5$ an hour and we send most monies back home to family supporting not only wife and kid. but mother, father, Grandmom. It is very hard not seeing our family most of the year. But it is all worth it seeing your family make great memory for life. Thank you

My brother worked on a cruise ship and he said if a guest made a complaint about a staff they were gone. No questions asked. They get rid of you for the slightest infraction sometimes.

My first cruise when I was 19 was the Pacific Jewel that leaves from Sydney Australia. They released the ships waste coming into Lifou and so much of the filthy water washed up on the beach and smelled horrific. I felt really sorry for the inhabitants.

As a baker, watching pastry and bread being done in the space they have is not nothing new, but doing it at sea is quite extraordinairy... I'd actually like to do a year on that ship, see what I can learn and just experience how it all just functions and take those ideas back home.

Same here! I've only been at this industry for about a year, and there's many things I can and want to learn. I'm sure a year on a cruise will be very stressful but beneficial to my growth. The trolleys and food rolling away because of the rock of the ship sounds like a nightmare though. Pretty sure many get scolded for forgetting to secure their things 🤣

I've worked on one years ago, it's not too bad, I was just washing dishes and stocking. The employee rooms are a little cramped, mine got really cold from the AC. I kept getting lost the first couple of days lol...

@@richtran it was salary, $2200 a month. This was before covid, so it probably changed and probably higher pay now. I'm trying to work there again next year with carnival again 👍 just for dishwasher,. Stocking and cleaning. And a free ship cruise. Not bad lol.

I went on Disney Cruise Lines and thought seven restaurants was a lot, hearing Royal Caribbean putting twenty-three restaurants on one ship is mind-blowing.

If anyone at Royal Caribbean is reading; have you considered utilizing the bio-waste as biogas for the new ship motors that can run on gas? You could easily setup some bio gas digesters near the ports in Bahamas, Puerto Rico etc. and unload the previous days excess bio-waste (hard solid sewage included) and then pump in produced biogas (that is produced from the bio-waste deposited week or so earlier). The end result would be fertilizer that can be sold locally, free fuel and no more valuable food being burned for pollution

Except the ship is actually flagged in the Bahamas. The point is still relevant. An US registered ship is much more expensive. There is currently only one major cruise ship sailing under a US Flag, The Pride of America, owned by NCL. It cruises the Hawaiian islands and is not a cheap cruise. However, to sail inter island in Hawaii with a foreign flagged vessel would require a voyage to a foreign port on every cruise. This would take several days and thousands of miles of useless travel. So the Hawaiian market is the one place that it pays to have one, and only one, US flagged cruise ship.

What an informative video! I had no idea about half of this stuff. Nicely done crew.

They are definitely overworked. Eleven months without One day off (unless her use of "vacation day" means something else). However, even at 17-20 thousand dollars per year, it is a lot more than some of these employees would make in their countries and can send much of their earnings to their families. Package includes free room, drink and food, not a bad deal. But if they feel overworked, it can cause stress, anxiety and depression, so maybe they shouldn't stick around too long.

I love to cruise but haven’t done so since the Covid lockdown. ..one day I will cruise again just not anytime soon. Two of my favorite Christine’s in Royal Caribbean and the other is Norwegian Cruise lines... my most favorite cruise was last minute a Norwegian 14-night cruise for $1,400… most excellent! .. and I love the crew because without them my cruise would be miserable.

Big Wow! Makes me want to go now. And the underground Kitchens are insane.. it looks like a lot of work and a lot of fun to work there..

What an excellent episode! These crew members do outstanding work. It’s like watching a well-oiled championship sports team in action.

I actually went on a tour of the symphony of the seas offered by royal Caribbean where we could visit crew only areas of the ship, such as the kitchens, laundry rooms and even the bridge, and we learned how the ship operated and saw all of this, and it was amazing.

The ginormous amount of food x 6,000 passengers plus a couple hundred staff x 3 meals + snacks x 7 days cruise x the number of cruise ships globally x how many weeks per cruise season = mindblowing. Now add in the food production rates being diminished by global drought. At some point, prices are going to rise rapidly, as well as competition for food supplies.

The fact that they only 9 hours to load everything and clean is insane. I can only trust form my own experience that being that busy makes time go by super fast

I've been on over 20 cruises and it never ceases to amaze me how well organized each ship is to make it work. But we prefer smaller ships that have maybe 3000 passengers.

I've been on Anthem of the Seas and it was incredible. I really miss being on that ship, it is just so different and exotic.

I work for Carnival as a Stage Lighting Engineer. I am always busy, checking all the lights to make sure nothing is burned out, making sure the color gels on the lights were still in good condition, checking video projectors and lasers, checking Co2 tanks used to create low fog on the stage. Preping the Pyro and counting it every week to report the count to the safety officer. One of my emergency duties is to station myself need Rib 19 Port side, there is a emergency exit there that I would guide people to. I am also one a medical response team that responds to a cardic arrest. We are not paid very much, but incorporating that we have no expenses at all, it makes up for it. As busy as I am, I still love my job

Just done one of the cruise trip of royal carribean, appreciate the service, entertainment, food and all of it on the ship!

When it comes to cruise ships, we have the 만경봉 (Mangyeongbong) 92. Built in 1992 (hence 92) using funds from the Chongryon (Koreans affiliated with the DPRK in Japan), it was once used to transport cargo as well as the Chongryon themselves between Japan and the DPRK. But after it was banned from Japanese waters in 2006, it became a cruise ship for Chinese tourists from Rason to Mount Kumgang. It was last used in 2018 to carry a 140-person strong orchestra to Mukho in the south for the 2018 Winter Olympics

Cruise ships are significant contributors to environmental pollution, releasing large amounts of sewage, wastewater, and greenhouse gases into the oceans. Additionally, their massive size and high passenger capacity can lead to overtourism, straining local resources and infrastructure in port cities.

I've been on the Anthem of the Seas to Bermuda, San Juan, St Maarten, and Labadee (Haiti) from Cape Liberty in Bayonne, NJ. I enjoyed sailing out of Cape Liberty because that means you get wonderful views of surrounding harbor and skyline. Seeing the skyline disappear as well as seeing it again when you return is just magical. Respect to Mazz! I think she made a great decision. She gets a free room to herself on board, travels the world, is probably saving a lot of cash, and stars in a real show for big crowds in a state-of-the-art theater. It's also a stepping point towards possibly doing West End, Vegas, or Broadway. And most importantly, she's happy doing this. It's part of your mental wellbeing to enjoy what you do. Chase your dreams Mazz.

When you thought your 10-12hrs a day, 5 days a week hustle was a real struggle then you come across this video saying that they work at least 14hrs a day *_without_* a day off for 4-12 months at a time.. 🤯

I kept wanting to change to something else but every time something more interesting to learn came uop so I watched the whole video, great work ! I have never been on a cruise ship now I definitely would like to go on one at least once in my lifetime. I have a new appreciation for all of the efforts it takes to run one of these liners.

I went on this cruise twice, once on a trip through Europe and second on a trip through the Caribbean, this is prob the best royal Caribbean ship so far, I've been on others like navigator of the seas but non is as good as symphony

It's a load of bs. They said it costs 1 MiLlIOn Dollars to run a day, yet tell us there are only 2000 rooms. When there needs to be 10 000 rooms all sold to break even on that million a day. Not even talking about profit. They are just making up whatever sounds good.

I have been on a lot of Royal Caribbean cruises & my wife with her friends on a hell of a lot more cruises. These men & women have it down to a fine science. So do many of the other top of the line cruise ship lines. They have my complete respect for doing a very hard job and doing it excellent. PJ

Few years ago, I was introduced to a ship crew in a party. I asked him " Don't you miss the normal world? Where is your life, when your wife is alone in bed and children are growing without their dads?" His response was bold and vivid. " I love ocean. I feel totally free from your so called world being myself. I work and enjoy, don't pay any notice to your so called world of racism, political or religious hatreds. On the ocean it became a military rule and we all abide by it. At the end of my shift I thank the God that I am free from garbage I had to deal everyday on land."

I know I'm commenting on an older video but I've noticed a discrepancy between what the video says about no vacation days and what I found in idle conversation and observation onboard the Wonder of the Seas. While you can't obviously go where you want on a day off crew members do get shore leave and onboard time off (with some restrictions as you see performers have privileges) one tidbit told to me by a photographer is often new things like upcoming menu items and experiences are often given a trial run on crew before being given the go ahead for passengers so a cruise worker does get some benefits from the position. That said potentially you get better treatment if you are passenger facing and being totally below decks has you screwed.

I'm literally watching this while on a Royal Caribbean cruise right now lol

Perhaps his idea is to enjoy a 5 star meal on the balcony with the wife and simply relax seeing the waves. The common areas are overcrowded cesspool anyways.

A big big kudos 👏 to each and everyone working day and night relentlessly for the maintenance and satisfaction of the people. All hail to the staff members 🙌 behind this successful journey ♥️.

So off topic, but the way the Driscoll’s boxes lined up at 8:24 to make full strawberries was very satisfying.

If it cost $1M to maintain then I assume it will be generating $1M+ a day. Else, why would it cruise in the first place for free? The cruise ship is built for business and no businesses run to loss at any cost.

You would have to fill 2,500 of the 2700 rooms with four guests in each room each paying $100 to break even at 1 million. There are some restaurants and features that require extra fees and activities that combined with the casino and Mall must be where the cruise ship makes their profit

​@@maxmustermann-zx9yq Nobody puts a gun to their head and makes them work there. I'm betting these people likely don't have a ton of opportunities for work so the ship is a great option. I couldn't even guess how many applications they likely get from people looking to work on the ship even at the current pay. However, if they decided to up the pay, interest in those jobs would only increase and just make it harder for these people to secure the job due to even more applicants and even further out foreigner applicants.

Being also a crew member, not on this ship, have to give a HUGE RESPECT for all of the hotel staff and captain’s team. But one thing is making me LOL, when someone from entertainers says how difficult for them to do their job. GUYS DONT BE RIDICULOUS! If it’s that much difficult, here are always needs of restaurant and house keeping, galley, recycling room staff.

i am glad they are recycling, of everything, wish more ships did some more. this is a improvement.

I worked before on a cruise ship, and we worked a minimum of 12 hours a day, no off.. most of the time split shifts. feeding 6000++ guests so I decided to go in a cargo ship or a tanker.. feeding 15 to 20 crew per day. a little more salary and less work, and the most I like most about it are I'm the boss in my kitchen. and no one can give me orders except the captain. 😉

The Executive Chef generally is an Administrator that helps run the operation like a General runs the army. He converses with management and the Chef De Cuisine who does the overseeing/management of the cooking.. I doubt he samples the food on a daily basis. ( I was getting vibes from him of talking himself up for the camera, much like tv Chefs that portend to be behind the burner when media come knocking on their restaurant

I went on this cruise. Absolutely hated it. I don't understand how anyone enjoys these huge cruises. And the locations you go to are mainly blocked off from the rest of the country (besides Mexico, that place was fun)

I'm so excited about this ship. I used to be a diver and seeing that there are now cruise ships that offer positions for divers really makes me want to get back into it again so I could work on a ship like this. That or one of the divers at the newly reopened Casa Bonita lol

mind boggling and truly impressive that they have such a large operation down pat but then again the basic architecture has had over a century to perfect. if my anxiety wasn't out of control I'd be primed and ready to hit that ship

Love crusing with royal but my last cruise on this boat was pretty lackluster compared to previous trips... also the covid experience is not like this at all anymore. so many people caught it on my boat

Great video with serious insight in to the Ship's operations. I have the greatest amount of admiration & respect for the Crew, Staff & those Performers who I think all work their asses off every day! The one (minor) disappointment IMO is the Food wastage, given the current levels of Global Famine, but that's a part of the experience that's kinda difficult to control. Hope to make a trip one day just for fun....hey if they start at $1K US, that's no so bad, again IMO...😂😂

It's crazy how so much goes into operating this whole thing, I'm surprised how little the amount of people are required. And then they're planning on putting this in the sky? Crazy! I'm excited.

I worked on a cruise ship in housekeeping department. During embarkation is a nightmare. 20 cabins for 4 hours and it needs to be ready and after that you need to meet the passengers and attend all emergency drills. Some days I can’t even hear my alarm because of tiredness. 12 hours a day no day off for 9 months.
