Why The Cheapest Ammo To Stockpile Isn't Always The Best

Why The Cheapest Ammo To Stockpile Isn't Always The Best
When stockpiling ammunition, finding the lowest price means more ammo in your stash. But you better test that ammo out before you invest heavily...
I was recently shooting some 300 Blackout I acquired from AAC Ammunition which was just 150gr FMJ range ammo. I don't stock a ton of 300BLK but I want to have some extra on hand just in case and AAC generally has a lot of value. However, for this particular lot or loading, I was faced with many primer related issues. Now, I have had an overall good experience with AAC in general but this particular instance gave me something to consider when it comes to stockpiling ammo for SHTF scenarios. If you don't test that cheap ammo you found for a great deal, you might not realize it wasn't worth getting to begin with.

Blazer brass has been my 9mm baseline since I've shot thousands of rounds of it without a single hiccup. Hornady Critical Defense and Underwood Xtreme Defender for defensive ammo. It seems to be PMC for 223/5.56 and and Russian made ammo before the ban for my 7.62x39. Winchester for my two hunting rifles... I might be here a while.

I reload and avoid these problems. I only buy cheap ammo for certain drills where total accuracy isn’t really needed and a failure is a plus to add to your drill. Depending on the caliber can depend on ammo manufacturer which is way too much to list here 😂 Also CCI makes good 22lr ammo, much better than federal or Remington, that SKS ammo is good for the 22lr. Their match 22lr is pretty good.

I'd had similar issues with an AR-10 and Winchester M80. It would work, without flaw, for a few rounds and then I'd start having light strikes. After much troubleshooting, I decided to swap the Bravo Company BCG from my other AR-10 with the Odin Works BCG in this one and that, for some reason, fixed the issue. And, I'm not having issues with my other AR-10 which now has the Odin Works BCG in it.

This is a well known issue with AAC .300BLK ammo. Usually with the brass that has 'JAG' head stamps. The ammo that is literally one dollar more per box usually doesn't have this same issue.

Great video. Coincidence in problems yesterday. I bought 525 rounds of new Federal..22 long rifle. Went out with several guns which are clean and Fire everything, as of yesterday. In every 10 rounds, it failed. To fire and eject completely with the semiautomatic. In all the guns I fired yesterday. I had older ammunition, no malfunction with it. Not knocking Federal. It made for fun weapon malfunction drills. Magazine change outs. But identical to your video. Keep up the good work.

The Federal bulk 525 qty .22 LR ammo has been video documented on U tube as having about the greatest velocity variance of any .22 LR ammo made , I recall from about 700 -1150 fps. Don't ever rely on it for self defense or hunting use in a semi auto firearm.

One thing that can cause issues with light strikes, is if the shoulder is pushed back too far and the round is going too deep into the chamber. Honestly, I highly recommend having a decent cartridge gauge. Lyman makes a good one. Also, I've found the sig MCX to be more finicky than straight AR type rifles. Honestly, I always recommend trying ammo before you buy a whole bunch of it, as usually the only people you can return it to if it doesn't work is the manufacturer.

Hey Magic P, here's what I have found from using the 300... The rounds work on very tight tolerances. Before ammo was available, I used to load my own 300. What I found was it was very easy to over or under charge these loads. This is due to a couple of reasons- the propellant has to be hotter for the ammunition to function properly, that being said, using the hotter pistol powder in the cartridges would often blow primers when overcharged even a little. The other issue is you are using a pistol length gas tube, so, it is not as forgiving as a 556 round through a mid length or full length gas tube would be. My powder measures are a little archaic, so if I'm loading 25 grains of H335 in a 556 round, and accidentally get 23 or 27 grains dumped into a case, it's barely noticeable, if noticeable at all when shooting, and the rifle still functions. Not so with the 300. The round that did not ignite looks to have the primer sunk in to the case too deep- IDK maybe the cases are a little out of spec. At any rate, if you don't reload your own, make sure you have various manufacturers in your stockpile, so if you identify what does not work, you can isolate it. Bad ammunition can be separated, and reloaded by someone who knows reloading, so don't throw the baby out with the bath water.

  • @MC-.-
    @MC-.-Ай бұрын

The primer is pressed. Over pressing into the casing will not allow the firing to reach it. Under pressing the primer will cause the firing pin to over extend into the primer causing it to rupture when ignited.

On top of manufacturing defects, some ammo does not work well with certain firearms. Whether it is primer related, projectile, bad fouling or corrosion from the power. An example, .22LR Federal bulk seems to like strong firing pin strikes from rifles, it does not seem to like pistols.

You cannot determine a bullet's OAL by viewing the cannelure grooves. Different manufacturers could have different length grooves, or simply not in the same place. Viewing the cannelure isn't an appropriate estimation method; unless you are only comparing one manufacturer and one bullet. Just the same, should always be measured. But that wasn't your problem anyway. Doing a quick review shows that you're not the only one that has had problems with AAC and light primer strikes. Good info you have shared. Thx.

Bought another lot 6 mo ago, an it jammed up my AR with FTE, stuck case, that mortality wouldn't even budge. Now its relegated to the SKS. What we found out with the newer ammo was the shoulders weren't as sharp, an seemed to be at a different angle than the older fodder. I agree but I will admit PSAa QC has been garbage lately. I used to be a huge PSA fan but now, Im not even sure I want to do business with them anymore. Wayyy too many issues with their products. Ill give em the benefit of the doubt on the ammo for now but I know for a fact those new daggers are garbage and theyre just pumping em out without inspecting. Some of the flaws/issues are so obvious and youtubers are exposing them left and right. They need to get their stuff together, its getting pathetic. Take some damn pride in your work and dont just pump out inferior products to make a quick buck, PSA!..

300 Blackout, KeyMod handguard, an IR laser that color clashes with the rest of the firearm, I think I see the issue. You've gone back to 2012... *Cue the song Back in Time* AAC (according to my overplus of time spent on KZread) has had some issues with other calibers as well, particularly 5.7 that doesn't fit in some chambers. I made my mistakes with Freedom Munitions back in their pre-bankruptcy days and haven't been in a hurry to go through that again with another newer ammo maker, especially when combined with some of my non-premium PSA products... which oddly also have the name freedom in them.

2k rounds thru that platform would be a test. 300 blk out is rediculous. Get an AK if you wanna shorty. You can get an Aero 11.9 and be dead on with 223 and 5.56 if you want a truckgun. The gas system is key on AR style platforms. A reliable SHTF firearm should be able to chew thru anything. No one is going cqb. A 20" AR is most effective and reliable, and the least amount of wear with rifle length gas block. Both my Aeros have never failed once. No matter the ammo. And as preppers, thats what we need. Not some boutique crap that you will never utilize because of training, nor the ability to go to an ER for emergency gun shot treatment when you try to enter a building with your suppressed 300. That being said, buy away my fellow Americans. We can own what we like!

@MagicPrepper the 308 cases on the bottom show deep extractor marks flattened primers, which are all excessive pressure, even missing brass off the bases.
