This was essentially the same team from last year. Yes they were going against a different GSW team but man you think they would they would have championship mentally throughout the season to work on these things. They pretty much knew GSW was going to be in the final. Do you think they need a coaching change?

Kai Liu Very good point! Cavs are already the most expensive team ever and they are foolishly trying to get another superstar. It starts with the fundamentals and solid coaching ... hell they are still paying Mike brown 😂 They need to start within and look to recruit better to patch up the holes in their bench and get a defensive identity

Chefsteph for 3 the cavs def was not that good the whole season. thats why with durant the gsw would win the finals with ease. he is a even better def than off player and overall the best def player in an already top def team with 3p firepower galore. if u ask me they gave away game4 on purpose. i wouldnt call it rigged, i d call it professional courtesy, for the sake of future nba business. the amount of points the cavs made in game4 doesnt fit in the whole finals story at all.

As a lebron fan, I expected the cavs to be a little more competitive on defense. I don't Lebron has necessarily lost his edge on D, one bad year or series don't mean he can't train for that over the summer. I think it's just a testament to how unbelievable the warriors offense is.

  • @Andaconda4LH

    @Andaconda4LH

+Goose I believe they picked up Korver for another catch-and-shoot guy out on the perimeter that could be fed the ball by Lebron. Deron was picked up as another playmaker to come off the bench when Lebron had to take a rest. I think Lebron and Lue were confident in their strategy of primarily iso-play and having Lebron run the offense but the Warriors have possibly the best defensive player in Green who can cover all of the half-court, KD the interior, and Klay the perimeter. As competent as Lebron, GS was just better built on defense to counter them and as you said, Cleveland doesn't have enough two-way players to pressure GS on offense. That's why all this hubbub about Butler or George going to Cleveland is going on because adding 1, or hell, even both of those guys could make Cleveland more competitive on defense.

Lol I haven't payed any attention to them in the years Lebron wasn't there, but I feel like they weren't God awful on purpose they just had some of the worst lineups in basketball. They got Kyrie with the Clips pick to my knowledge, so the bum years resulted in Wiggins (doesn't play D, would not contribute to this team at all in my opinion) and Bennett.

It's mind boggling to me that people can watch this video and immediately comment nonsense after seeing you expose the cavs pathetic effort on the defensive end. The only reason for a slight rise in the cavs defensive efficiency during the finals is simply urgency. Their bad habits remained and if they don't do something they're just going to get smashed again next year. They need to set their egos aside and open their eyes to the lack of effort on the defensive end. The cavaliers truly believed they could shortcut their way to the finals by tanking for the 2nd seed to avoid a fast paced John wall led Wizards team.

Another great video/analysis coach Nick. Here is my take (I also used some of your comments in previous videos/podcasts ) I really think the CAVS don't need much more than what they have today. Maybe few minor adjustments to the roster can be useful but more important than that they need to: 1- Stop treating Lebron James like a god, and more like a player in a team i.e. a component in a system 2- Have a real system that works with/without Lebron. Currently, Lebron is the system and they get lost if he sits out for 2 minutes. The way things are today, he is bad for the team and makes the team worse. For sure many Lebron apologists try to spin this fact to demonstrate that he is the MVP while it is exactly the opposite. 3- Play better defense and be consistent throughout the regular season without coasting while using the stupid excuse "can flip the switch in the playoffs". If they were able to play better defense against GSW, the finals would've been more competitive and would not end up in a gentleman sweep. 4- The team should be the "CAVS team" and NOT "team Lebron", that does not make him less valuable, but it shows the importance of the team and empowers the rest of the players and make them more accountable. 5- All Lebron brainless lovers (Shannon, Nick, Colin, and others) should shut the f up and let the team work as a team and stop trying to minimize the value of other CLE players to maximize the value of Lebron. Now y'all found out the hard way that your "king" cannot do it alone, you are not doing him a favor, probably your stupidity, obsession, and your lack of objectivity are the main reasons the man gets so much hate, so stop this BS and shut up for your man's sake. 6- If Lebron really wants to be the best player on the planet, he needs to work on his post moves, on his mid/long-range game and free throws. He is a very dominant player and great in finishing around the rim (layups and dunks) but that is not enough to make him the best player on the planet when he cannot shoot the ball consistently. Hopefully next year we'll have a more competitive finals and let the better team wins.

  • @iyado25

Jean-Patrice: with all due respect, I disagree with you. He is amazing and impactful, but I cannot call somebody the best basketball player on the planet based on sheer force and athleticism, and that's how Lebron plays. If he does not bully himself to the basket for a layup or dunk, his team will not win a game against a good team. But I understand where you're coming from.

I think Cavs offence also is a problem, they run ISO most of the time, and rely the other team double LeBron to kick for 3s. When I watched the finals this year, GSW offence just generated open looks after open looks. While the Cavs offence just made me say, WOW that went in, Kyrie and LeBron are so great. I just wish Cavs can run a team offence, so that LeBron won't be so damn tired and giving up on D. Tristan Thompson and JR's contracts don't leave Cavs many options.

I think a lot of people missed the point. I've been saying this to myself as well, despite what everyone thinks especially cavs or Lebron stans they didn't lose solely just off of them not having a better team or golden state being too good it's the fact that they didn't do the little things like getting back in defense hustle stop transition play better defense not turn the ball over and execute better offensively and not go ISO all the time was the difference. So I don't wanna hear how unfair it was how "stacked" golden state was and how Lebron didn't have any help...that's bs just saying. They were able to get away with it when they played through the rounds of the eastern conference but once they played REAL competition in the Warriors it was a whole different story...

Accurate and insightful. I've said it twice and I'll say it again, the best player in the world can't be lazy on defense. LeBron is great but I can't get behind anyone who turns it on and off, especially on defense. He didn't seem as engaged as he was last year in the finals. He was a beast last year and deserved all the accolades received. I heard you talk about rumors of him possibly leaving the Cavs. That would be very disappointing. Sad really. He was basically general manger of the team, he got the players he wanted, he got the coach he wanted, yet his effort was still piss poor at times and he really didn't take advantage of all he had. Now if he leaves he will appear ungrateful... To me at least. He was given all that power plus claimed he came back because if his love for north east Ohio. It wouldn't make him look good. So I hope he stays this time

In every playoff game the Warriors scored a phenomenal amount of points - much of them off transition play. All the teams including the Cavs were unable to stop the Warrior transition points so Warrior scoring was seldom under 120 points. Their only loss out of 17 playoff games (16-1) was when the Cavs scored 140 points (a fluke).

The Blazers lost to the Warriors because they had no real rim protection & the Warriors defense shut down Lillard & McCollum. It wasn't their transition offense. GS scored mostly in the half court that series. The Jazz lost because they couldn't score when they were able to get consistent stops. Same thing that killed them against the Rockets last year. They also had no answer for a rested KD. The Spurs were actually dominanting the Warriors & keeping their fast paced offense in check. Once Kawhi went down, the couldn't make up for his 26 ppg & elite defense. The Cavs had two elite offensive players & three point shooters surrounding them & two elite rebounders yet they got killed in transition. Mainly, because they never properly practiced the entire year. They had horrible habits like always complaining about calls, jogging & leaving JR & TT vulnerable in transition, committing dumb fouls because they can't defend when outnumbered, & ball watching Steph to the point of giving up multiple dunks because they were completely focused on Steph. If you gave the Blazers, Jazz, & Spurs one of LeBron or Kyrie, they would've taken at least a game if not two over the Warriors. Especially the Jazz & Spurs. They had top five defenses that year.

Yea one thing I never understood is when people defend the fact the east is weak. Was the Warriors path easy? Sure it wasn't as difficult as it could've been, but they earned it by winning 67 games in the regular season. The Spurs had to fight because they had the 2nd seed. The Cavs would've made it to the finals no matter what and not having the 8th seed meant they would avoid even a remotely competitive series. They essentially took a step back so they could have an easier path to the finals and honestly I think were unprepared for how much firepower the warriors truest possessed. The Warriors fought for the one seed, then took a step back once they got into the playoffs when they simply overpowered some teams.

fundamentally it's because of curry's insanely cheap contract, that's why warriors can have 4 all stars and at least two of them are future hall of famers, when any other team in the NBA can only fit 3 all stars in their salary cap with one HoF level player, so you lose the starpower that means team wise you need to be so much better, but that's not possible since almost all 29 teams are copying the dubs and they are doing it without a "genre defining" Steph Curry

Salary cap keeps going up, plus there is the luxury tax, plus there is attachment to the team. Remember how Wade accepted paycuts ? Not to mention, many people are ready to join the champion team for cheap. Curry and KD already are filthy rich, they probably won't mind taking a paycuts if it means building a dinasty or going for a 3 peat.

Kyrie, JR Smith, Kyle korver, and Kevin love were never good defenders everyone of them have always been trash on that end. Lebron wasn't a great defender all playoffs but, especially in this final. Look at warriors shot against him with him as a primary defender on someone. I mean Stephen Curry shot 100% on lebron and KD shot over 65% with him as a primary defender.

The entire team was terrible on defense. They didn't practice properly all season & Lue openly joked about their defense & never made any adjustments. They let DeAndre Liggins go to bring in Deron Williams & he provided them nothing in the Finals. Liggins defended Curry & Thompson very well during the Christmas day game & they let him go. Kyrie, Love, & LeBron were all slow in transition. They always jogged back. JR got abused on switches & committed dumb fouls. Thompson couldn't out rebound Curry. And, worst of all, they allowed the Warriors to score easy layups & dunks because someone stayed back to complain instead of getting back. They had embarrassing bad habits that could've been easily fixed by simply practicing. They would've beaten Golden State had they simply had a slightly above average defense. They didn't even need a great one.

MD Twomp I'm not taking away from his credibility. Just simply stating the obvious. These are things a pre teen would notice when you slow down the film. He's basically pointing out what the Cavs did wrong while slow motion allows him to explain what he analyzes. Can you do that on the fly? In game? Crunch time? Make adjustments during timeouts to counteract whatever the opposing coach is going to do? THAT is the pressure process that molds a great coach. Sure, it's easy to fix these things from a game that's already been played; but what if the next game KD is starting at PF? What if they start passing instead of driving? What if theIr game plan changes before you can act with yours? Don't ever question me again. Basketball is chess. Not checkers.

It's similar to Lebron's play to get Draymond Green suspended in the 2016 Finals, and Lebron choosing teams "built" to dominate the Eastern Conference. Even his selfish play for personal stats despite the loss for his team. Legacy?...spare me.

He's not a great or even good defender. He doesn't even try. His defense peaked in the 2011 season & he hasn't been a good defender since the 2013 season. He's been coasting on that end to fluff up his offensive numbers ever since he won his second title. The Cavs weren't even practicing after they won that 2016 title.

GS is indeed a super team, however, they are built by GS awesome team management and coaching staff throughout the years, Klay, Steph and Dramon have always been with GS. Unlike GS Warriors. Cavs is currently exceeding the salary cap, has no draft picks. Most importantly, Lebron is a great player, but he can't make his teammates better.

Marv That's a lie. In 2015's Finals LeBron played like trash. Averaging 39% shooting, and playing lackluster defense. In fact, while LeBron was on the floor the Cavs actually played WORSE than when Mozgov was on the floor. At the same time Curry's true shooting percentage was 59% (efficient) and he allowed less points per possession while he was on the floor than LeBron. I'll give you 2016, since Stephen Curry was hurt LeBron outplayed him. But this year it was a wash, they both played great. However the most important thing is who won, and so far Curry is 2-1 vs. LeBron. When it's all said and done Curry and Durant might end up with more rings also.

This video nailed it. Another concern I had was how little Cavs tried to slow down entry passes. After the Cavs scored, Warriors inbounded the ball so quickly every time and they passed ahead, creating a transition out of nothing. These type of plays can destroy momentum and lower your confidence (just after you score, they score because you were too slow). Cavs need a transition defense overhaul this summer. I think it was back in the 2014/15 season, teams had a man slowing down the Warriors entry passes. It worked to slow down Warriors pace and limit transitions.

Great video coach! Not just in transition, the Cavs defense was a mess, and the offense seemed to rely on superhero shots, which they got, but the half court "help" assignments were awfully mis-positioned and understood in games 1 and 2. Then when it became clear that they needed to "trap" PNRs to get the ball out of the hands of Curry and Durant, the non-trap players failed to triangle up, and the trappers failed to Hustle back into the play once the ball was passed out the trap. It hurts to say it, because I like Lue, but the Cavs are poorly drilled and that's the meat of the job. He should NOT be safe.

LeBron's ball dominance is what lost the Cavs these finals. They were good enough to compete and win against GSW. Too much of LeBron thinking he was Kyrie.

I suggest do a video on the Cavs offense. My personal take of the Cavs lost is because of James. He is like the 2 edge sword. Simply put it, he is too good for his own good. Because he is playing point guard, shooting guard, small forward and center at the same time (and coaching on top of that), and his role is not define. At the last game of the final, we saw how he just go one on one and force to the basket. The Warriors had way better team work and get easier bucket (as shown in your video). Look at the golden era of Lakers with Magic, Bulls, and Lakes with Kobe and Spurs, each players is more well define. Like Kobe is the guy and D Fish is the spot up shooter. I think the coaching team needs to define James a better role. He is his worst enemy.

ppl gotta realize that 1 great defender won't do much difference, Korver, Frye,Kyrie,JrSmith,Love, and the rest of the cavs are defensive liabilitys while on the court.

I really think Bogut wouldve helped them. Its a shame he snapped his leg 50 sec wearing a cavs jersey. What the fuck was David Griffin/LeBron thinking going into the playoffs with no 7 footer in the rotation? Tristian and Love try and play hard but they seriously thought they were gonna win with them protecting the rim?

lebron>kd Irving>curry(according to cavs fans) k love=draymond green TT>>>zaza klay>jr how is this series not competitive?Game 2 to 5 are all within reach of the cavs. u guys need to separate player's performances and the level they belong. if they did performed poorly, theres nothing u could say about it

arlongan nobody says Kyrie is better than curry, only trolls, Kyrie will eventually be better imo but not now, warriors have the best PG, best sg, second best sf, and top 5 pf. U can't say the talent was equal unless u said the Cavs had way more talent last year, gs was 73-9 and added kd. Gs also has Iggy who is a starter on most teams.

Another very expected thing that might have screwed the Cavs over is the fact that Tristan Thompson didn't do what he was supposed to do. I remembered the 2015 Finals where he was basically wrecking everyone on the board ... didn't see that this year.

I think its a debate now between KD and Lebron. KD surpassed Lebron on the defensive end, and the only real advantage he has on KD is passing, but thats a much better and closer debate than the Lebron and MJ one.

They were doomed because Kevin Durant joined a team that was 73-9. It's not fun or competitive to have a team in the league like that. I can't stand the Warriors, specifically Durant. SMH.

Shawn John Oh REALLY? Does this mean that you've complained about LeBron and whatever team he's on, to where no other team in the Eastern Conference has been able to get by him for the past seven years when it comes to the ECF because he's too good? Or is this just your bias talking because there's finally a team that rivals him, or better yet is better than him? GSW has been building this team for over several years, and deserve every credit they get to making what they have. They didn't buy star talent like Cleveland did; they slowly molded and created the superstar team team they are now over a number of seasons. Personally, I'd like to think their work started to pay off at the end of 2013, where the next two seasons you could see them visibly and substantially improving. And as for Kevin Durant, I'm really sick and tired of people like you bitching and getting after him for signing with the Warriors. If you are given the opportunity to be on the best team of any sport, of course you'd fucking take it without a second thought; who the hell wouldn't? Considering he was getting nowhere with the Oklahoma City Thunder as well, with constant playoff failures. -Sincerely, a Sacramento Kings fan.
