R6 for events, R5 product. Why? Often overlooked is the 20 mp sensor of the R6 is better for event shooters, corporate, weddings and the like because when you need to shoot a thousand or more photos, processing those photos is much faster and less processor intensive. Not to mention storage. Especially if you’re doing multiple events in a weekend! Additionally the lower pixel density means larger photons on the sensor = better in low light, as events tend to be. I’ve gotten not just usable, but clean photos at iso 12800. It’s magic. Of course your exposure needs to be spot on, at that iso, because you don’t want to be trying to push your shadows at all. Now the R5 it lives in the commercial and product category, it was built for that. When you need extreme detail and IQ, that’s your jam. But those photographers are only shooting 50-100 photos per job, usually. Of course there are exceptions like if you’re shooting an entire catalog or portfolio. Hopefully you’re also charging accordingly. My point is both cameras are fantastic.. you just have to decide what kind of shooting you’re doing most and select the model right for you. How many of us just want to get the most features, most megapixels most bells and whistles for the least amount of money, instead of giving careful consideration to what is the right camera for your needs? Then dising on the camera they chose when it doesn’t live up to their expectations. Of course, I didn’t mentioned sports and wildlife shooting but again it comes down to choosing the camera that is going to fit best within your shooting scenario. That’s where experience matters, and that’s a whole other topic.

I've owned the Rebel, 5DII and III, 1DII to 1DIV and switched to the R6. I love it ! It's the best camera I owned. Only drawback is the shorter battery life but I can still use the batteries of my 5DIII.

Nice! The R6 is great. Once you get your hands on the R5 there’s no going back though.

Great stuff here. I've been giving serious thought of adding a mirrorless to my arsenal of DSLRs, and I'm really leaning towards the R6, or possibly the R6 Mk 2. Thanks for posting!

Glad it was helpful! Save with the R6. You can also buy the R5 used for a good price.

I've shot the R6 since it came out in August 2020. I've since sold off my 1Dx2 and bought a second one. Had struggles nailing the AF in low light as the R6 lacks the ability to trigger the AF assist beam on my camera in low light, but switching over to native RF lenses solved the AF issues (was previously shooting with EF lenses with the adapter. Havent seen the need to get the mk2 for now as I shoot mainly stills.

Really informative and honest video. I’ve had my r6 for 2yrs as well. I don’t shoot much video, but for stills it’s a beast! If video is not your main focus with the old canon 30 min record crippling, then $1500 is a steal.

R6 is so good. I tried the R6ii and for photography it’s essentially the same camera. The R6 is no slouch for video too.

I was originally using the R6 but my current daily is the R5C, with the 50mm 1.2 L USM, and 24-105mm F2.8 L IS USM Z. Very much looking forward to the 35mm 1.2 L USM! I mostly shoot service industry (restaurant/bars). This body and lens takes exceptional photos with the proper settings 👌🏽

Great commentary on the R6. Good work in the examples, I love the R6! I have been using the R6 for over 2 years. I have the R6Mark 2 also but I go back to the original OG R6 bet it renders warmer colors. I shoot weddings why pay more. The specs are not important

I do not use video. I still have an older Nikon DSLR with some fast medium zooms and a few primes. However, I moved to the Canon R5 just over a year ago. I am not residing in WY and use my 100-500mm for mainly horses, wildlife and far off old buildings and windmills. I know crazy! I have a 15-35mm that I purchased used I like for shooting weather, clouds and landscapes when I feel the need plus I have the 24-105mm. The thing I don't like is if I have to change lenses in a hurry if I have the 15-35 on the R5 and then a antelope shows or a hawk or meadowlark I spot on a fence line. I was thinking of keeping the 100-500 on the R5 for the crop factor and purchasing a used R5 or R6 for the landscape and sky/storm shots. Not sure which way to go. I use the Nikons when the weather is challenging and taking street scenes in Cheyenne. I just can't sell my beloved, old Nikon set up.

If you need the high resolution, I highly recommend the R5. It’s really handy and I find myself reaching for it every time over R6. But if you are on a budget, there are older, high megapixel cameras that you can buy used and will work just as well. The 42 MP Sony A7RII is around $1000-$1200

I currently own the R6M2 and love it. If I had owned the original R6, i would not necessarily recommend upgrading to the M2 unless shooting video with no recording time limit is important. I am considering getting the R5 though 🤔 would be nice having both bodies

Yes. I have 2 R6's and an R5. When I want the best shot possible I reach for the R5 for the 45MP and uncropped 4K video. Also nice to have multiple bodies and not have to change lenses all the time.
