Why The Army Canceled The 'Shark Attack' Tradition At Boot Camp | Boot Camp

The United States Army Infantry School announced it would no longer conduct the unofficial ritual known as the "shark attack" during basic training. The event created an environment of chaos and confusion wherein drill sergeants yelled at the new recruits for nearly an hour, ordering them to raise and lower their heavy duffel bags over their heads. The shark attack will officially be replaced by an organized event called "the first 100 yards," which will incorporate team-building exercises and physical challenges.
In February, senior video correspondent Graham Flanagan spent four days at the Army's Maneuver Center of Excellence inside the Fort Benning military base near Columbus, Georgia, where he captured what may be the last recorded footage of a shark attack taking place.
Flanagan spoke with Command Sgt. Maj. Robert K. Fortenberry of the Army Infantry school, who explained why the Army is moving on from the shark attack. Fortenberry said the event is a product of the draft-era Army, when drill sergeants used it as a tool to identify what the Army described as "undesirables."
According to Fortenberry, the shark attack does not reflect the culture of the Army’s modern, all-volunteer force.

People are going to complain about this not being hard enough, it’s not how I did it, etc. that CSM made some interesting points about outcomes and I think they are worth thinking about.

As a trainee that went through BCT with the first 100 yards, I can say with confidence that I really do think it's better than the shark attack. The way we did it, we got off the bus and instantly, we started hearing gunfire and explosions in the distance, while our drill sargeants ran out from behind us and started screaming at us that we needed to move and get all the shit to the EVAC point. They also singled out trainees that just stood there panicking. It accomplished the same goal that the shark attack did of confusing us, exposing us to the stress of the environment and simulating a combat scenario where we had to focus and listen to orders under pressure, but unlike the shark attack, we actually got valuable training out of it, because we had to strategize and make a plan and work as a team to accomplish the mission in this insanely stressful situation that we just got dumped in. And just like the video stated, the drill sergeants did NOT go easy on us.

I came from a military family and knew what to expect. I would just brace and tune them out until they got tired of getting no reaction and moved on to the next recruit. The shark attack meant nothing to me, and taught me nothing. It was just an initiation rite and a waste of time, and the hardest part was refraining from rolling my eyes. Getting smoked was different - it was an earned consequence instead of useless noise-making, and I learned something each time I got smoked. I agree that learning how to respond to good leadership is a better use of time.

Couldn’t agree more. When I got smoked, it hurt physically, and mentally my brain eventually realized the importance of “think Private, think”. The best leaders I met in service got into my head by leading by example, and showing me immediate consequences for failing to do as taught.

Watching this video, and listening to this Sergeant Major, I've concluded that "cancelling the 'Shark Attack'" is click-bait. The "Shark Attack" has changed forms and has become what the Navy might call a "training evolution." Also, from the five or so minutes of footage I've seen, it's another one of those things in Basic that represents what a Soldier might encounter in their operational career; having to rapidly move equipment, perhaps to set up a base somewhere or prepare an improvised casualty collection point. Instead of being screamed at holding a bag above their head, they're being screamed at carrying necessary equipment from point A to point B.

There is a change though. They’re not being yelled at in their face for no real reason. Or told to hold a duffel bag over their head. Or having multiple drill sergeants yelling at you for no real reason. Instead they now have team building activities with the same intensity without the yelling in the face thing and being purposefully belittled.

Standing next to me was a shorter guy, and when it came down it knocked his out of his hand and the drill sergeants surrounded him and started screaming at him. When they left he looked up at me and was like “why would you do that to me ):” I felt like shit the whole time Edit: for everyone getting all upset over it, he wasn’t upset over it when he realized it wasn’t intentional. The germans never use technics like that even in prussian Times. And to even the US-General in Afghanistan said that german soldiers are the Best men there. So it seems we are doing sometging right. That's fine on the civilian end. But from a governmental standpoint, you want your training to be as focused on making soldiers as effective as they can be. There's no evidence that many aspects of basic training effectively carry over into combat or field situations, and the shark attack is a prime example. We somehow build a culture that says we want the best and most respect for our people in uniform, yet one of the biggest elements of training is psychologically humiliating them. While humility is a great point to start from, only using negative reinforcement has actually proven to be counterintuitive to effective behavior training overall. This is an area where our armed forced are stuck in the stone age due to all the "WELL I HAD TO DO IT" veteran crowd that can't get over their own pride.

Former paratrooper here, spent 12 years in the infantry, graduated Ranger and pathfinder, multiple tours. Having said that, I agree with the 1st 100 yards training objective. What was the main point of the shark attack? To instill fear and dominance. These young men and women are scared out of their minds on day 1, I still remember it. Now, they're introduced to team work, and are given a goal to achieve. There is still plenty of yelling, intimidation and smoke sessions for all to enjoy. Plus, that demo at the end? I know anyone that's been in longer than a day may not be impressed, but for these young people, that's the first time they're seeing it first hand, an example of what they might become, and more. There's inspiration in something like that. Everything doesn't always have to be 'old school' to be effective. Times are changing. Change can be good, if you let it.

Even then, not everyone is made to be in the military. I won't call them 'losers'. It merely wasn't a match for them, it's like asking a bird to swim. It's not for everyone. Believe me, there's plenty of system shocks later on in training...as someone who's possibly shipping next year, I've done my best to read up on what I might be in for, and other changes made seem to make up for no Shark Attack.

No one cares about the yelling and screaming they knew it was coming and they all signed up for it the drill sergeants are literally 24/7 yelling and screaming anyways so the drill sergeants hated it because it’s just a waste of time and they would tell us at the end it’s hard work yelling and screaming that much they would rather teach you how to be a real soldier who you want next to you in a gun fight and operate as a member of a team because the yelling and screaming will happen the entire 10 weeks and it did when you screw up and have to get smoked. The nexts weeks will be filled with Mini-shark attacks anyway. I joined in 88, my son left for basic last Sunday. Just from watching these videos I can tell you things have changed even since 88.

The whole point of Shark Attack and basic training was to break you down as an individual and bring you back up as a unified team. You have to going in with that mindset that the drill sergeants aren't singling you out just to mess with you. They are trying to get you ready for what you might see in battle. When you're in combat, you can't just quit and walk off the battlefield. You have to fight and get your team through all their objectives.

Ending the Shark Attack is the worst thing ever. It purposely induced stress on the trainees. It broke individuals down to be able to start building a team, team that could operate under highly stressful situations. It made you look deep within yourself to see if you could carry on with the mission of basic training or if you figured out that military service wasn’t for you. Quite frankly I’m glad to have gone through the shark attack; several kids decided that they couldn’t handle it & couldn’t adapt to the military lifestyle. I would rather that happen in the training environment than when down range & because they couldn’t handle cause my other teammates to get hurt or killed because he decided he needed to quit. I disagree with the SMA & fully believe the Shark Attack to be a vital part of Zero Day & a vital part to building mental toughness.

One of my drills told us after that, this is what combat will feel like when it happens. Crazy, confusion, and you're going to have to listen for orders and for your buddies that need your help. When those moments of confusion happen, I want you to stay focused, engage with the task at hand, and give your all. That's what will give you the best chance of surviving combat. I get the CSM's point, but as a combat arms vet, I'm not sure how I feel about the value of doing a mock supply run and some exertion versus trying to follow directions in the heat of confusion and starting to acclimate to that level of discomfort. Suffering is part of doing the job if you're training for combat, doubly so if you're downrange.

Americans in general are also increasingly unfit for military service and most people who are doing the fighting aren't line troops, they're SOF. By making basic training the equivalent of wheanie hut jr, less of the nerd weak bodies will break when it was never necissary for them to have combat conditioning, and thier sole purpose is to program switches and do PME.

I went thru USN Boot Camp in Orlando in 1975. If we weren't on the Grinder marching, doing rifle drills, or the O Course, getting yelled at, and the Black Flag was issued, we were back in the barracks, with the other Company's Commanders and Battalion Staff yelling and tearing racks apart and throwing clothes around for a hour. After squaring everything away, we did PT for another hour before chow. Seems like they had a timer running so they would know when to end it so we could get the compartment back to normal and then head to the Chow Hall. After days like that, we definitely chowed down, and could go back thru the line a 2nd time, and still get finished in 15m's. Then there was the award for those who skrewed up. It was called IT, or Intensive Training. There were "Litter Boxes" of sand out by the ladders going to the Compartments. Situps, Pushups, Squats, Jacks and 100yd Swim in the Litter Box. We had 2 people go to IT and after that 1 time, they, nor anyone else in the Company went to IT. Ahhh, the good ole days! Ok, I'll shut this Word Fit down for now. Regrets for Lack of Brevity.

I remember how it weeded out 3 soldiers out of 300, they quit on the spot. However, it did place that “survivor” mentality. Every man for himself since mass punishment was coming regardless of who is at fault. I’m sure older vets can attest to the harsher punishment yet I still think BCT was a breeze. I do like how the first 100 yards establish leadership and cooperation which is more commonplace once the soldier is in their unit. “Surviving” isn’t really necessary in garrison. It’s just a fun tradition. Sad to see it go but hopefully this will improve the leadership amongst the Army ranks.

Please don't turn my Army into some soft, Boy Scout entity!! Nobody has ever died because of the Shark Attack!! Civilians need the shock and awe to break them from that goofy mentality, into a soldier's ability to follow orders under pressure. We are preparing for war not picnics!! SMH I took Basic at Ft. Benning, and it was amazing. Our Drill Sergeants were the best and prepared me to serve. War is tough and you need tough physical and mental training to survive it. If you can't take getting yelled at, you sure as hell won't be able to take getting shot at!!

War doesn’t care about your feelings, if your commander tells you to advance towards fire and death you need to be able to stay calm and control your fears. Shark-attacks are meant to teach you how to truly survive in a stressful situation, if we are to fight the Chinese or Russians we will regret changing this period!
