    The thing is, with Crosby, Malkin and Letang all having NMCs - its not really even up to management to rebuild at this point. And with them all still playing at a high level, the trade makes sense. The rebuild was going to be brutal whether they traded for EK or not. Let's have some fun

    It's up to ownership and FSG doesn't want to rebuild so case closed. If Dubas started putting them into a rebuild, they would fire him and hire someone that won't.

    @astrobot3038 agreed - maybe not the full cost but theyd get something. I have no issues with trade at all. The Pens will most likely never have a core like Crosby/Malkin/Letang again - try to capitalize on their final years as much as possible. The rebuild was going to suck no matter what - keeping a 1st and 2nd wouldn't of changed that. Sure it might add a year or two - but that's worth it to be competitive now imo

    It’s pretty ironic that EK wanted to be traded to a cup contending team, and gets traded to the same exact team situation that the sharks were in when EK first arrived in SJ, long contacts, plenty of NMCs, cap trouble, aging players, etc. Although, SJ didn’t have players on the caliber of Crosby and Malkin. Gonna be an interesting couple seasons for Pittsburgh.

Had Letang not had a freaking mini-stroke and a regular injury and Jarry stayed in shape not giving DeSmith so many games, they likely would have made playoffs, they only didn't because FLA started playing playoffs mode in late February until the rest of the season after Keith Tkachuk openly criticized the team. I think sometimes Lemieux should inject some commentary to fan the flames of victory for his group of birds.

    Dubas is doing it right. Roll the dice by getting Karlsson and see what happens the next 2 years. After that, it's not hard to picture Pittsburg in a long, slow, irreversible decline as they attempt to rebuild, or at least retool. In 2016, San Jose was in the SC final. In 2024, they likely will be the worst team in the league. Chicago won 3 cups between 2010 and 2015. Since then they have yet to get out of the 1st round and in '23 were an abysmal 26-49-7. At least some decline seems inevitable even for the best of teams.

    I have to dispute that notion because while I certainly understand the desire, you got to have younger talent (and I mean all star talent) to help deliver it at this point and I don't see who they have who's that good. Back in the 00's and early 10's Detroit remained contenders despite the retirements of Yzerman and many of the guys who won them their late 90's early 00's Cups because there were both veteran leaders available to fill those roles and younger skaters who were also great coming up. Karlsson potentially can be Pittsburgh's Lidstrom, but who is their Datsyuk and Zetterberg? That said getting him is a move that I like, one that says both that they're looking at regaining relevance now and looking a bit to the future, but they really need to find those younger players and I think tying up that much salary to the old core is much more of a nostalgia/loyalty move than one that will make them contend.

    There is this cycle of- get lucky at the right time to get the right high picks to build your future core; core develops while the team still gets good talent in their talent pool; the team breaks out and wins a cup or two; keeping the window open would mean giving up some of the potential talents to get wins now; by the end of the window, almost all of the top-end talent was traded away so the rebuild needs to start at the bottom; Chicago did it (drafted the core between 2002 and 2007; won 3 cups; and from 2017 onwards gave up talent to get Kane and Toews a chance to win another cup and only last year Chicago started to hoard picks and prospects), Pens are on this track (near the end, but not in the actual end), Lightning is on this track (probably somewhere in the middle).

    This could be a "Make or Break" team. Not hockey sportwise, but highly relatble to the context - I get into my mind a highly similar case from the NBA back in 1997. Charles Barkley, a MVP league player and fan favourite signed on with Houston Rockets, lead by its back-to-back champions Hakeem Olajuwon & Clyde Drexler in hope he could spurr extra life to win his sought after championship he sought and re-igniting the win fire in Olajuwon & Drexler. Now, that never worked out as all hoped as we now know. Erik Karlson here is Barkley (the seeker) and Sidney Crosbey & Evgeni Malkin are Olajuwon and Drexler (the team's champions who wants a last run at a championship). Erik Karlsson at age 33 is still in his best years and have all the chanses better to win a Cup with the Penguins then the Sharks, but I'm sceptible how much hunger Crosby & Malkin still has in there tanks to go those extra miles to battle for another Cup. They have done it 3 out of 4 times and those battles took there tolles.

  • @gabrielrockman
    @gabrielrockman Жыл бұрын

    As a Capitals fan, we saw last season how injuries can really hit an older team hard. It definitely can happen to the Penguins, too. It's easy to blame injuries for the Capitals missing the playoffs last year, and it is correct to do that. But when you load up your team with guys in their 30s, you're setting your team up to be much more likely to be hit by the injury bug. It's not like injuries are just completely random and if you get hit by injuries like the Capitals did last year, that it's just bad luck. It's kind of like pulling your goaltender in the last minute of the game and then being surprised when the other team scores. Sometimes you're put in a situation where loading up on guys in their 30s and hoping to dodge the injury bug is the path that makes sense. That's what has happened to both the Capitals and the Penguins because of the career paths of Crosby and Ovechkin. The Letang and Karlsson contracts are going to be a pain for Pittsburgh when they look to rebuild in a few years, but at least they didn't give 6.5 million a year for 7 years to Tom Wilson.

Wilson and Lucic are both dirty physical players, and that type of player tends to not do as well in their 30s. The Lucic contract wasn't a good one, especially near the end of the seven years, and since Wilson will be two years older than Lucic was when his 7 years started, I'm sure that Wilson's decline will start earlier in the 7 years than Lucic's did. The Pens transition game and power play should be greatly improved. Not only the addition of Karlsson, but the removal of some extremely poor puck-possession defensemen really helps this team. I don't see the secondary scoring in the bottom six the Pens were badly lacking last year, nor do I see the Pens repeating their largely healthy year from the core, especially Malkin. I also don't see Jeff Carter coming back from the cliff he fell off and question why he wasn't a buyout target with only a single year left. If this team stays healthy, I think it is a playoff team, but they're going to have to have a lot of things break their way to be serious contenders. This is a team that badly faded down the stretch last year, and it doesn't bode well being a year older.

    I'm really surprised (as far as I've seen) you haven't.mentioned the passing of ex-Bruin Gilles Gilbert.

    With a full summer of rest and recuperation for the old guard I'm quietly confident that we should at least make a good run into the playoffs. The decision to go all in with EK is undoubtedly the correct one. Unfortunately this gambit will live and die on whether the risk to stick with Jarry pays off or not. Hoping against hope that he comes good but it'll be really sad if a goalie implosion is what costs our core plus EK a final tilt at the Cup.

    Been the story all along for the Pens under Crosby if you think about it. Really the story of any winner. Fleury/Murray/Jarry have all been nothing but inconsistent through their careers (Flower much less so, Murray much more so, but I digress), and it's easy to see years where the Pens win it all with better goaltending, or possibly lose a cup with the opposite. I think Jarry can be that guy, but he's got to stay healthy for the Pens to make a run.

    I’ve been a penguin fan for a long time. They did not do anything to solidify their goaltending. If and when Jarry gets hurt, they do not have a solid back up to fill that hole. I love the depth on defense and I think the office will be OK but their goaltending is scary.
