Why The $340 Million C-17 Globemaster III Became The Center Of Evacuation Efforts | Boot Camp

With a price tag of about $340 million, the C-17 Globemaster III is one of the most in-demand cargo planes in the world. It can transport troops and cargo as well as aid in the evacuation of people in weather-ravaged or war-torn areas. In August 2021, the C-17 was used to evacuate thousands of people from Afghanistan during the Taliban occupation. Insider got an exclusive look at the plane to find out how this giant aircraft is able to perform its unique missions.

Look up a C5 Galaxy. Those are some of the largest military cargo planes in the world. You can stuff all the cargo from three C17's in a C5 and sprinkle a couple C130's and a couple school buses to take up the empty space. I think it can handle something obnoxious like 60 more tons over a C17.

Yes, I don't think it's really correct. I have heard a KC-135 pilot talking about flying with winglets, and he said takeoffs and landings were easier. He said it's because the wings produce slightly more lift with the winglets since you don't have wingtip vortices. That allows for slightly lower stall speed (change of less than 5 knots), but also noticeably improves low speed handling (maybe because of cleaner airflow over ailerons but I'm not sure)

I couldn't tell if these replies here were addressing your question. If you were referring to that upturned fin-like winglet at the end of the wing, I heard that it was a recent (relatively) addition to modern aircraft's wings which extend range and performance and maneuverability. The wingtip vortices, or swirling air (drag), is greatly reduced.

Never liked flying on the C17. Always preferred the C5 Galaxy. Now that was a HUMONGOUS and comfy riding plane with good pilots. Hated the side wall jump seats on those. That's where the 17 beat the 5. Much better seats in the cargo hold. However, both were leaps and bounds better than the C-130. Always found myself in and jumping from those mostly. Bleh. So a 17 or the 5 were like tour buses versus the 130 which is like riding the over packed buses in rural India.
