The bike has more than enough power and I salute Honda for not engaging in the power stakes like other manufacturers do. It’s not about how many HP you have on tap if what you’ve got is already more than enough for the needs at hand, it’s more about the package as a whole. Because it’s less power now everyone else has upped there’s, doesn’t make it a lesser bike. As a 2023 ATAS manual owner without electronic suspension, my bike is a keeper, simply because I ride it mostly two up, and the ES can’t cope with as much weight as an Ohlins equipped bike like mine can.

I agree and why I have a 2021 ATAS. However, power is important to many many riders. It needs to be part of the discussion when the AT is compared so often to other brands flagship models or if a rider might be considering upgrading from their 2020-2023 AT to a 2024. It sounds like you will be keeping your 2023 and not getting a 2024 because of the updates covered here.

Yes I agree, it has like 102-104 HP. More than enough. My Tenere makes about 74 hp. I am happy with it. Oftentimes is not so much the horsepower, but how you use that power. It’s similar to trqcrion control, electronic suspension, and all the electronic junk, other than fuel injection and antilock brakes. If people think that they need all that junk to be safe, then they need to reevaluate their skills, not your bike. I’ve been riding for 37 years and none of my bikes have had any of that junk. I rode 5-6 days per week, rain or shine, day or night. And in those 37 years I have never crashed or fallen. I must be doing something good. My debate about large bikes is that all are loaded with electronics. All that junk come at a price. There is no such thing as a free lunch. And according to surveys the number one source of problems in modern bikes is… dha dha…. You know it, electronics/electrical.not only do all the junk increases the price of the bike by a few thousands, but repairs are also super expensive. So do I spend the money to get me a bike adventure bike, or get me another bike with the least amount of junk in it?

@@GreatEgret Since you want to make it part of the discussion you also need to discuss fuel. The AT makes that power on standard fuel, no need for premium, unlike the competitors. Good luck finding premium in remote areas, use standard in those competitors and you won’t be making that peak power

“…for those that want more power”. Seriously? For what, exactly? Extra power will always cost in terms of reliability/longevity. The 1100 will last 3x longer than a KTM 890. Love my 2023 AT DCT. Best all purpose Swiss army-knife motorcycle on the planet.

"slow and steady wins the race" - the current AT engine is a big ol' 1084cc putting out only 100bhp with a 10.1:1 compression ratio. So it works a lot less hard, and on cheaper regular gas, than its hotter competitors. A big engine loafing will usually last longer and have less problems than a more suped up one, and cheaper to operate because it doesn't require high octane gas. I have a (used) 2021 AT DCT base model, which I love. But I'd probably still trade it in on a 2024 ATAS DCT for tubeless tires alone, not to mention the slightly lower seat height and better suitability for the road (I'm mostly on the street).

For a long time the AT was my dream bike, in many ways it still is. I had the chance to buy a used 2021 earlier this year and actually opted not to. I just couldn't justify buying a bike that I would not ride all that much. I am fortunate enough to be able to ride just about every day, however the majority of that riding is done in Bangkok traffic, and the AT just wouldn't be the right right bike for that. Even on the weekends most of my rides are around the city. I feel like if I own a bike I should be riding it on a regular basis as it would be ashame not to. But god is that a sexy bike. someday.

@@hillkiran Right now my daily rider is my Yamaha Exciter 155, it's small, has a 6 speed manual, and more than enough power to get me around in the city, and even on short jaunts out of Bangkok. I have a Grom as well that has become something of a project bike. If I were to go bigger for a city bike I would probably go with the Honda CB300R that is about as large as I would want to go with a bike for my daily riding in and around BKK. If I lived in any other part of Thailand I likely would have pulled the trigger on the AT when I had the chance. There are some amazing mountain and jungle trails here that it would really be suited for. But if I owned it I would be lucky to get it out once a month because in the city I would just be sitting in traffic.

@@TokyotimTech The transmission isn't why I would not want the AT in Bangkok. all my bikes are manual, its about the size. I would be stuck in traffic with cars trying to get up and down Sukumvit. on a smaller bike you can cut in and out and lane split. the AT is too large for a daily Bangkok bike IMO. probably any other city in Thailand it would be fine, Bangkok is just too dense. Japan has pretty strict traffic laws... not so much in Bangkok. ;-) that probably levels the playing field for a big bike in the city.

Sadly it doesn’t look like it’s coming to the US, especially since they just brought over the Trans Alp. The Trans Alp is a nice bike but it’s not as good looking as the AT and is missing the TFT, cruise control and ES option. It would feel like a compromise to me.

Having AT 2017 Standard model with about 25km ridden, I could not be happier with it. Reliable, comfortable, nibble, great looking, checks all the boxes. Also heavy, tall (I am 5'9" 155lbs), smaller tank than desired...sure it is not perfect. BUT, what bike is. In my view I find it the perfect all around bike, it has plenty of power, can go anywhere, can carry passengers, can do long trips but take you to the coffee shop, low maintenance, long intervals for service, to me and many one of the best looking bikes ever built, and probably two things that matter the most - Reliable as Honda and best dealer network for any bike manufacturer. As for 24 model, the lower seat, 19" front wheel, little more torque...it is not much. I also hoped to see the turbo on it, as rumors where circulating the web, but maybe next year. Are there more powerful bikes with more tech and gizmos...yes. But, the amount of people that can ride AT to its full potential and utilize all it has are very few, and these are probably the KTM owners. For what it is, a bike that lives between mid and high displacement Adv/Touring bike, I think it has proven itself as a real gem, and anyone who has ridden it will agree. Honda is traditionally slow and very secretive to make any changes, which is exactly why they have been so successful in all of their domains. 23 vs 24 model, unless one can't find older for a good price and is not a crazy off-road rider, I don't think 24 is a bad proposition. Still, 24 is still less money than pretty much anything else in higher class and most in lower 900cc class. The power was never an issue and the parallel twin is a so well built, with power and sound that are intoxicating every time you twist the wrist. I won't be changing or replacing mine until a very very very very ...very long time. It is that good.

Anything over 100hp is just crazy. 65-70hp is plenty. They need to get the seat height down, get rid of ALL the electronics, and keep the tubeless tires. The older carbureted Kawasaki KLR650 is an ideal adventure bike except for its tube type tires. I wish someone would make tubeless wheels for it (NOT a tubeless conversion that WILL fail) and I'd buy one right now. An adventure bike need to be something that can be worked on in the middle of nowhere (hence no electronics) and you need to be able to get both feet on the ground because you will almost certainly be riding over stuff that will require you to help hold the bike up. It also needs to be able to run on whatever swill passes for gasoline in third world countries. Itchy Boots is doing just fine on a Honda CRF300.

I think honda will sell a bunch more ADV/ES versions with the lower seat and 19 front wheel thats better suited for road based touring.and matches the GS. if they arrive in the US in 24 ill go to the dealership with the checkbook and probably leave with one if it fits me better than the previous versions.

How much HP and torque do you need on a touring bike??? The 2024 ADV S has got 1nm of torque more than the Kawi1000SX, a road touring bike. Big torque and HP is the reason they have to build in electronic controls because they know it's dangerous and not practical off road. HP and Torque is what the manufactures knows sell their bikes. Not common sense, reliability, comfort and style. The African twin, just like the Yami Tenere 700 is totally overprized in NZ. For those who think the KTM's, Aprilia, BMW 850/900 or Ducati engines will last as long as this low compression engine, do your homework and talk to very experienced riders. I know I can go to AUS or Africa and will be able to get low octane fuel anywhere. I never bought the AT because of the seat height and 21" front wheel. Now I can.. .BUT!! The price might stop me from doing so. Have to wait till Sept 2024 and see as Honda NZ are SILENT about the price. The Triumph Tiger 900 GT Pro might be my other option. My take on it: if you are concern about HP and torque, buy a naked or sports bike. 100hp and 112nm of torque off road is way tooo much. Read what @Istavenhagen said below. These big HP/torque bikes all suffers from heat problems. Ask Triumph, KTM, Aprilia, BMW and Ducati riders.

It seems like Honda is backing away from the AT. The mid-size ADV bike is the hottest market, with the 400-500cc lightweight Dual-Sport bikes coming on strong. Honda has those covered now with the Transalp and the CRF450-RL. When I had the Pan America that was the message I kept telling the MOCO, get a mnidweight out there and a capable scrambler. Honda will sometimes make a misstep, but rarely. Personally, I'd like to see Honda take the AT to the aggressive mid-size market, 800cc, with great user (not electronic) adjustable suspension... Something to compete with the Ducati Desert X. Something lightweight and aggressive.

The 890 is a bear to pick up in the mud riding solo (almost a no-go with the larger bikes like the ATAS) and that's really where those light weight Dual-Sport bikes shine. Unfortunately the lightweight D-S bikes do not shine when you have to ride 300-500 miles to get to the off-road destination. But why would a manufacture do that? I suppose that the bike must not be selling well. If it was then why skip a market? It would make no sense. At the same time Honda is not the only manufacture that keeps giving us the middle finger and we keep kissing their rear end by accepting whatever washed down version they want to send us, while the Europeans get all the premium features. A great example of that is the Tenere 700. I have a 2021 that I bought new, and I’ve been waiting for the WR version since it was introduced in Europe. I doubt that we will ever get it. Unless your a track or drag bike 76000rpm is high in the rev range for an adventure bike. Torque is far more important in an adventure bike to get you out of trouble. AT touque comes in 750rpm sooner at 5500rpm in lieu of 6250. How often is an average adventure bike doing dakar racing at 120km/hr (80mph) in the desert. Lets get some realism in here. Not everyone is toby price or skylar howes on the weekends. Theres a lot of grasping at straws in the assessment. With the adaptive cruise all it does is put in a price competition with bmw. Why would you do that considering its nearly 300cc lower in capacity. Their decision to do that really pissed me off, particularly since they made it available to the rest of the major world markets. There were a few remaining 2022 models at the time I was looking, but none were available in my state. None. Now that the 2024 models have been announced and no mention of it from American Honda, I'm done. So, I now have a deposit and my name on a 2024 BMW R1250RT! I am beyond excited and its really hard waiting, haha. But unfortunately for some buyers, including me, Honda is a very conservative company, and doesn't really lead the market any more. At least not like they used to. With all that said, I'm not really sure it needs to have a lot more horsepower to be "competitive", but it does fit into an unusual niche. It's bigger than a middle-weight, but too small for the big boys. I'll be looking to sell mine as soon as my RT comes in. @@GreatEgret

What you just stated is your opinion. Just because it differs than mine does not make a title and thumbnail clickbait. I’m happy to discuss more why you feel I’m wrong about that. I’d even love for you to change my mind. But I work really hard on this content and for you to minimize it by calling it clickbait because you disagree with is misinformed at best. Clickbait means a title and thumbnail are a misrepresentation of what is in the video. This is not the case here. I feel it’s not worth your time and after I cover all the updates for 2024, I state all the reasons it’s not worth your time. Now please convince me that it’s worth my time instead of confusing your opposite opinion with clickbait.

Don't think it's a clickbait. I like the fact he mentioned that people are actually using the ATAS as a sports tourer instead of an actual off road bike. That's a very accurate point in Singapore, Malaysia and Thailand.

It's really a shame about the AT. It's just a weird bike. It's not very luxurious compared to a GS. It costs more but has less performance than a KTM 890. And to top it all off they are unobtainable. The one thing they do have going for them is it's probably the least likely to not start up and leave you stranded. I was looking for a used ATAS post-refresh with manual trans a couple months back. And not only was it going to be way too much spend based on what the DCT version was going for, there were literally 0 new or pre-owned post-refresh ATAS manual trans bikes for sale in the United States while I was searching. I ended up going the R1250GS route and it was the right choice. For all tasks except ones where the 21 inch front and extra ground clearance have an advantage, the GS is the better bike. AND if you are comparing with a post-refresh ATAS, because of how rare they are, the GS is cheaper and easier to get. Go figure. Plus the boxer torque is real. That 1250 engine is just fabulous.

It is so frustrating how difficult it is to get an Africa Twin in the US and I’m guessing they are going skip the US market in 2024 again. Every year until 2023, the Honda Powersports US website was updated with the new year AT by October and dealerships knew their allotment. Not this year. I’m spending a week in Arizona between Christmas and New Years Day. I’m renting a R1250GS. I’m looking forward to comparing it to the AT.

Sorry, it should be "are talkig about". I own 2024 ATAS and I can't say that it has not enough power. For ADV riding you don't need more power. Thanks to smaller front wheel it has better handling on road. It isn't my first bike. I am rider since 1980. I was riding GS 1250 ADV, Multistrada V4s, Tiger 900, BMW F1000, F900, MT 09, Tracer 9 GT and more. As you can see some of them are more power full. I was riding also ATAS in 2022, but i was too short and i felt myself uncorfotable. Now it is perfect machine for a long distance touring for me.
