Mike Beltrandi last week I had to ship a Les Paul with DHL through the whole country.. It were a few sleepless nights since it was only wrapped in lots and lots of bubble foil and put in a box. No case since the buyer did not want to pay for it. It survived, but I was very anxious until it arrived. I got a nice Strat out of the trade so in the end it was worth it!

I grew up on strats and absolutely hated teles. I hated the way they looked and I hated the way they sounded. Now that I'm older I've become enlightened to how cool and versatile a tele actually is. And without trying, tele has become my favorite. I still love strats, but I find I rarely play mine anymore as the feel and sound of the tele is just a better fit for me. Completely unintended and strange, but there it is.

Similar here... I bought a Fender MiM Tele and I can't put it down. My current #1 was an Ibanez Jem and I was a low-rent Vai/Satriani wannabe. But the Tele on clean or crunch is so fun that it has transformed me entirely as a player. (Though for a desert-island guitar I don't think I can choose between a Tele and a Strat... a brutal dilemma)

Same here, but i went a little out of the ordinary with my Strat, got a Tele bridge pickup installed (with a custom pickguard ), a clapton-style midboost circuit and some switching magic that allows me to get something quite similar to a Tele middle position as well as all three pickups at once. Had to drop the tone pots though, so i have a master volume, a mid boost volume and a blend for the brigde pickup. The amount of dynamics i get out of that guitar is insane.

If that’s the case I’m an outlier too, even though i don’t know what one is! I find the middle great for rhythm sitting nicely in the mix but still clear. With gain it can yield the full spectrum if you pick near the neck or near the bridge - totally different sounds!

The answer to it is to buy both. I had a Strat that I've been playing over a decade. I started to feel like I was a Tele-man and resented the Strat. I looked for the perfect Tele for years and when I finally got it, the Strat became so much better. I was no longer wishing it was a Tele because I had a Tele. The Strat could be a Strat. Turns out I'm not a Tele-man. I play both equally now and they both do different things well.

Great clean for funk and soul, reggae, etc. and with dirt, not as dark as the neck, not overly bright like the bridge and sits well in the mix. Didn't realize I needed a tele until I got one! Been playing Strats since the late 70's and always found them to be the most versatile for gigging. Alternated between a Les Paul and Strat for years, but found a sweet seafoam green tele last year and can't believe how much I love it. Really love the simplicity and feel that the pickup selector is superior in that I often hit the strat pickup selector when I get too crazy playing rhythm. The neck and bridge pickups on the tele are superior to the strat pickup sounds, but nothing beats the in between positions on a strat!

But if you are like John Mayer and can crank it, you can get freaking awesome tones. I’m just rarely if ever in those kind of positions where I can really crank it.

Fantastic video. Thanks My entry: After decades of gigging I found (and used it to my benefit) ; That if you play a strat and you have another player equal in tallent to you, compete with a humbucker or good P90 based guitar, the strat tends to be relegated and disappears somewhat. With a Tele not so. A telecaster can hold its own against any humbucker based guitar. Strats really shine if they are used with other strats or teles.

OK, in my opinion , the tele is like the polygraph test for guitar players. It reflects what you bring to the table. The strat is where I have mostly ended up and, in my opinion, the key to the strat is to not be gentle or shy about hitting it hard. Single coil pickups allow you a type of depth that you can really explore. One of the beauties of both is the pickups you choose and the in-the-room sound and feel you get.

  • @sigiligus

For me it's all about the sounds of the players I love and most of them are strat guys - Hendrix, Robin Trower, Gilmore, Joe Walsh, Blackmore, Audley Freed (cry of love). Plus the strat is the most comfortable guitar to play by far.

This was a great video to watch and hear the POV’s for each guitar. Being an owner of each, including a Thinline, the Tele has an edge over the Strat. Not to say the Strat isn’t a great sounding guitar, but you can’t get the warm tones and bite from a Tele on a Strat.

I played Strats exclusively for 10 years then switched to Teles exclusively for the next 15 years. I prefer Teles because the controls are out of the way and the two pickup configuration. BUT, after saying all this, I must confess I am now a PRS Custom 24 owner and finally completely satisfied. Great video and fire 🔥 ass playing! 🇺🇸🗽🦅🇺🇸

Both wonderful sounding guitars...great tone from both of you also. Pro tip: get a Wishbone mic placement thingamajig so you don't mess up your XLR cables and you get the best positioning with the mics. It doesn't take up the space of a regular mic stand and is easy to move/adjust

I love both, but should point out the Strat was initially supposed to be the new version of the Tele. The Tele we all love is actually a newer version of the Esquire (which had no rhythm pickup or truss rod). Leo Fender was always tinkering. He had the Tele in the hands of some local players, and was getting a lot of feedback about what they wanted to see in the next version. Leo added the tremolo (to compete with Bigsby), he contoured it, added another pickup, added deeper cutouts for higher fret access and realized he had a whole new model. The Stratocaster was a big hit, and it was the flagship Fender instrument. But, as I said, I like both since they are both amazing guitars.

I've got a G&L ASAT Classic S with alnico pickups. It's similar to a Nashville Tele. You get close approximations of the Tele neck and bridge pickups, the middle pickup of a Strat, and in-between sounds as well. (I also have a G&L Legacy.) I used to have a Strat, but sold it. My biggest gripe with the Legacy (and the Strat before it) is that the floating bridge moves when you bend strings, making an annoying clicking sound.

I used the last tone knob as a blend knob of the bridge and neck pick up to get that tele middle position-ish type of sound and somewhat humbucker-ish type of sound on overdrives. I've modded my strat with a 3 way switch instead coz I usually don't use the in between position in my playing.

I have a made in Japan thin line Tele and it is just amazing, H-S-S spec with wiring as below 1/neck in humbucker 2/middle in lipstick single coil 3/ neck and bridge 4/ middle and bridge 5/ beige I think it has both Tele and strat sound in one 😆😆

I have a MIM Nashville Deluxe Tele with the strat pickup in the middle, no volume pot mod though. I have a filtertron-style pickup at the neck however, so the guitar as a whole has white a lot of dynamic range now.
