Why survival based eating might be keeping you dysregulated, sleepless, & irritable w/Jessica Ash

Meet Jessica Ash. She’s a Functional Nutritionist and self-proclaimed “hormone nerd” who’s here to teach you how to use food to become FULLY NOURISHED.
In this conversation, Jessica and I get into the many pitfalls of survival-based eating, why this fear-filled, restriction-based approach to food is now the norm in our Western culture, and how to shift toward fueling your body in a way that honours our human biology and supports the nervous system.
I cannot stress this enough-no matter how much information you’ve ingested on this topic or how many diets you’ve tried, please give this interview a watch.

I think a whole foods, local and seasonal, nutrient dense (ie. significant amounts of animal protein and fat), organic diet with some carbohydrates AND fat is best for the vast majority of people. I think increasing fat intakes by around 20% and potentially being in ketosis for parts of the winter makes sense for people living in the northern hemisphere, as this mimics how we've eaten for eons due to less food availability. I think grains, nuts, seeds and foods that are produced from these foods are probably the most harmful for the most people, due to how significantly these have to be broken down by our digestive systems and utilised by our bodies to a) extract nutrients and b) deal with potentially inflammatory/allergenic components. Ultimately, if people want to figure out what food works for them, an elimination diet is the way to go. This type of diet can be extremely limited (I mean 3-5 foods) for a couple weeks/a month and then people can start adding foods in from there. Reintroduction should be assessed against biomarkers ie. Lethargy, skin health, digestion, anxiety/stress/irritation levels, sleep quality, etc. I am a dietitian - not that everyone in this community cares about credentials as a lot of what's promoted is completely unconventional. Personally, holistic/lifestyle/alternative health has done much more for me than allopathy!

I know for me eating gluten, dairy and processed foods are very disregulating. I’m excited to hear this episode. Healing is a multipronged approach. It’s not just one thing and food is more of a critical piece for everyone, than many realize. Dr. Kelly Brogan and her mentor Dr. Gonzalez have great work around this. He wrote a book over 30 years ago called Nutrition and the Autonomic Nervous System. Way before his time. Like you said, even if the trauma is processed, still must eat well (and exercise). Our body is far too complex for it to just be one thing. It’s a symphony of several things for healing and health. ❤

"fear of emotional regulation," after feeling full and nourished can be terrifying because, then, there is nowhere else to go but address one's emotional fears. I intuitively discerned this analysis after experiencing post-priandal panic during one of the most existentially traumatizing months of my life. It was the last time I took a carb/pasta based lunch in the day, when I'm conscious. But my developing orthorexia during a vegetarian year scapegoated the panic to gluten sensitivity. Sighhhh it's so validating to hear a professional in the medical field articulate what I've felt. THANK YOU. I'm definitely one of those diet experimenters, but now wondering if mainstream dieticians and doctors have a point by appreciating the power of the body

Yes, ancestral nutrition is key. I'm a dietitian and was fully vegan for 3-4 years but ultimately had to add back in animal protein and fat. I now believe that animal products provide the bulk of our nutrition. Starches, fruits, honey and select vegetables are great for carbohydrate intake and ensuring a variety of fibre types are consumed but the nutrient content just isn't there. Too many concerns with a lot of other types of plant foods, for me.

What an absolutely amazing episode. I am so glad you had this guest on your show/podcast. You've gone through the very essential topics and she explained it so well. This was very interesting, informative, helpful and most of all eye opening. Just the nudge I needed. I've been in a severe burnout/adrenal fatigue state for almost 6 years, my NS dysregulated, stuck in fight/flight, lost so much hair and muscles which turned into excess fat, my sleep is dysregulated, tired/exhausted most of the time, very little physical strength, unable to do too much activity during the day (a walk in the park is 1 activity) & week, unable to process too much stimuli (including people), meanwhile processing the traumas/programming that is coming to the surface which is also very exhausting. I struggled with my weight, body, appearance, health issues and didn't know what to do and eat to get my physique and health back (or better). I've been doing (trying) the ketogenic, various intermittent fasting diet on and off the past few years including having a chocolate addiction. It's good to know that the body is not meant to follow such diets for a long period and it can cause (more) stress to the body. At this moment I have no idea what my body needs, when and how much to heal it and how to stop/resist the chocolate. Listening to my body is very important yet challenging, since there is so much unlearning of misinformation, programming and relearning what is right for me. I hope you will have her on your podcast again and would consider working together doing more podcasts. I also hope you will some day have a guest that reflects the (ancient) spiritual (not religious) aspect of our healing process/journey.

Personally, holistic/lifestyle/alternative health has done much more for me than allopathy! It sounds like your body needs a lot of rest. Doing bodywork over the last year, informed by Irene's videos, has been HUGE for me. Really just anything that takes your out your head and into your body/aware of your senses in any safe context. You can practice it whenever, assuming you're not in an unpredictable/potentially harmful environment. Getting my circadian health/sleep in check in the last 6 months has also been huge. This is as simple as morning sunlight in eyes and then every few hours throughout the day + wearing yellow tinted glasses during day and red ones at night. Removing all harmful chemicals (cosmetics, cleaning, shower products, etc), which can look like all chemicals, was also fundamental but I did that years ago. You don't need replacements for 95% of it. I've had severe health problems in my life and these have been the fundamentals that truly changed things at the root. I'm very healthy now, more so than most people I know. Bottom line is you MUST listen to your body. Don't exercise if you're exhausted, if you are sleeping for 10+ hours then sleep duration isn't the issue, don't eat anything "healthy" if it's throwing your digestion off or bloating you. Lol, I really rambled on. I hope any of this is of use!

Very interesting! Whole 30 was not good for me. Now I eat every 3 hours, carbs and protein together. When we do restrictive diets the body thinks we are on famine and will go into survival mode. Intuitive eating and eating unprocessed foods is better than restrictive diets. Also, feelings of anger will affect digestion and gut health according to German New Medicine. A situation that cannot be digested or a injustice done. It is so important to look at emotions and perceptions. Perception changes biology, so either we have to change the things in our lives we are angry and frustrated about or change our perception about them. Otherwise, the body will be affected.

ive been through something similar. i did paleo, low carb, keto for years. low carb and keto were very stressful and did lead to all the symptoms of mineral loss, poor digestion, high liver enzymes, insomnia. i never adjusted even with extra enzymes, minerals, etc. all my labs got waay better on a high carb diet--liver, organic acids, gut infections, nutrient, hair minerals all better. i think where nutrition and regulation overlap is that the more regulated you are the more aware you are of what you need and how things affect you. it helps with instinctive eating which is the ultimate way of eating. regulation helps us relearn to be an animal and follow impulse, and for the impulses to be cohesive rather than craving something that makes you sick. regulation raises your vibration so you crave healthier foods and feel energized to make them, but also makes you more resilient to imperfect foods. It doesn't always make you immune. comfort food does have a place in the person stuck in survival state. for me it's often just the thing to eat some junk like McDonald's when i get so sick with stress i lose my appetite and get into the adrenaline nausea low appetite cycle. something high calorie and high taste and low effort can kick me out of it. all things considered id rather have a loved one make me something healthy and appealing but in our society there are often no loved ones to do that. it's us and mama restaurant.

After 9 months I am just now starting to feel better since stopping Keto/Carnivore/Fasting. The transition was tough - but once I finally completely changed my mind on wanting to do those extremely restrictive diets, I was able to see real results. I am not completely healed yet, but I have made a lot of progress and am happy to finally feel better. I was definitely that person you described that kept trying more when all of a sudden I was no longer feeling good on Keto/Carnivore/Fasting. I literally said 'there is nothing more I can restrict!' I wish I would have discovered this after the first few months when my hair started to massively fall out and I was absolutely exhausted. 4 years later, I gained 30 pounds in just one month having changed nothing.....I still kept on until I discovered Prometabolic and Ray Peat about 10 months ago. It took awhile for my mind to fully accept this as I had programmed my mind to believe that ALL carbohydrates were the devil. My goal is to get back to the point where I no longer have digestive issues and can technically eat anything without negative results. I will ALWAYS choose the right options for me but until then, I know something is amiss. Healing at a root level is now my focus instead of chasing symptoms.

But every time I'd go back home to the countryside to visit, I'd gain weight in a matter of days and my bowel movements are very frequent twice a day sometime with no fiber, just regular plain old food. I did an experiment back home, 4 days eating gluten and starch and processed sugars, little veges, fruits and i was still going frequently. So still being in the city i cut out all the junk food and processed sugars and still having issues in the city. I need an answer anyone. Please. I'm desperate at this point.

I don't really see how fasting can be considered an unhealthy approach to health. Most people don't fast its too much of an alien concept, i wonder how many people would benefit. By default our ancestors went through periods of fasting (whatever their usual diet) so its something our bodies are adapted to. Hence the ability to survive on fat stores when needed. I guess it is a stress for our bodies but don't we benefit from that through resting the digestive system, getting rid of waste and toxins and so on. Stress itself can be a good thing; high intensity exercise or lifting weights can stress us but we get stronger and fitter through that process. All the same I agree that carbohydrates have been given a rough ride in recent years incorrectly; we do need them and its the most natural thing to burn starches for turning into glucose and then going into the Krebs cycle to create energy. Burning fat (or protein) is always going to be second best. That seems to contradict my earlier view on surviving on fat but the key is how often. Short fasts or occasional longer fasts are probably the way to go its getting that balance.

Thanks for this interesting information session. I am diabetic (type 2) and have been struggling to get my levels stable. It fluctuates between very high to very low. And I have changed my eating plan since the diagnosis (6 years+-). So I take in very little carbs, and have basically cut out sugar almost completely. I am incorporating more protein into my diet, but am very restrictive when it comes to eating, and this has become quite unpleasant. Please help! I am searching different websites for answers, but just haven't found anything. I do attend a diabetic clinic regularly, but it is a state hospital, which just treats the disease, and doesn't look at the person as a whole. These all-integrative practitioners on the other hand charge so much, that it is just unaffordable. Please help!

I wish I knew this earlier! A few years ago I was obsessed with diet because I thought that was the key to health and healing what I now know was trauma. I was doing fasting, keto and meatless Mondays trying to fix insulin sensitivity and a gut dysbiosis. I actually think I made a lot of progress in this area, my physicality was freakish, and my immune system was beastly, but I could not ever feel ok. I had so much difficulty with little human interactions, even with people I considered friends, I felt so anxious! School, work and even relaxing at home became almost unbearable. Naps were impossible, so was sleep! I gave in and started eating oatmeal and beans, and sometimes cake. Stress came way down Eventually I worked on a lot of trauma and NS regulation. The YT guys I listened to on nutrition also said sleep and stress were more important, and eventually Irene became my main YT guru, so I prioritized NS health and regulation. 3 years later, after lots of SE and NS work I decided to give my gut dysbiosis another crack. This time I did keto for 3 weeks. Today is my last day and I am so glad to be done! However, this time I had a goal after doing keto for a short period! I had a much greater capacity, a much more robust support system and an SE and pro nutritionist I am working with. These weeks have been tough, I haven't been able to regulate my stress as well, and have forced me to confront some wounds/traumas I still have to heal, but because of the capacity I have built, I have been able to deal with it! Now I'm going to break keto, keep feeding my gut happy foods, including nutritious carbs and have even more capacity! From the carbs and from the healing work I have done this week and am still doing! It's not hype, Your NS health is foundational to your overall health! Even more than nutrition! And yes, insulin resistance and gut health are important, and so is a robust regulated resilient nervous system!!

Sooner or later humanity will have to absolutely quit using violence on other complex and acutely conscious beings - animals. (No, not for reasons told by the rulers about the weather stuff.) How we get there is for all to find out. I do not think we can afford going there mindlessly and without proper capacity and knowledge tho. (No, not a vegetarian speaking. )

Very inaccurate information. Gluconeogenisis is not a stressor to the body. Also, while it is true the body can use tissue for gluconeogenisis it rarely ever will unless one is starving. There are many different non-glucose precursors the body uses that we derive from food to create glucose. The last thing it would ever do is break down tissue. There is so much other in incorrect things she said but that alone disqualifies her from being someone anyone should listen to on this topic.

Many nutritians ”professionals” aren’t really professional, they just hop on a trend to have flourishing business. All this talk is usually VERY SELF ABSORBED ”me, me, me and MY body”, ”what is THE BEST for ME”, but what is best for the Earth?! What about animals, their immense suffering?! Animals eat other animals. Humans are animals. We are obligate omnivores. We have the large brains we do because we fished and hunted and killed animals and ate them to feed the high caloric needs of the human brain. Longterm veganism stunts children’s growth, and human babies will die of starvation if fed a diet of solely vegetables. Life consumes life, this is a FACT. I will choose myself over any animal, because that animal would choose itself over me.

Doesn't matter if you eat meat or plants..... animals will die. We want to raise animals AND grow plants sustainably and humanly. Most plants are grown with man-made pesticides that poison humans, animals, air, waterways and soil. And most modern plant food we eat today did not exist 50 to 100 years ago. Both animal and plant food industries need improvement.

@chadmraps Hello, Sophia here from Team Lyon. Thank you for your feedback. In regards to the cost, we are hopeful that one day, we WILL be able to offer such programs at reduced costs due to subsidization via larger organizations and corporations who have the equity to do so. But for now, in order to heal trauma at this level, at this current point in history, it does take money. That is the plain and simple truth. There is no denying that here. Therefore, Irene's decision to offer a free video training as she has, with a lot of education, as she has, and then offer a program that is her work and what she's been putting together for 20+ years, is definitely not for everyone. It is important to note that the cost of this program, in relative terms, is reasonable when one considers how much in dollars years of private somatic therapy would be - especially to work at this deeper nervous system level. As she mentions in her videos on the registration page, she created this program because it was not cost-effective for her clients to see her to lecture and teach them the self-study lessons, and theory, on an hourly basis. When someone joins one of our paid programs, they have the content for a lifetime. It never expires and it is always there, and members receive upgrades to the program free of charge, and can return each year we run to be a part of the group, attend live calls, and ask questions via our forum. Specifically for the 21 Day course, our students are supported year-long by our skilled team of moderators who are there every step of the way to offer advice and insight. Additionally, along with her paid offerings, Irene offers many free resources which can be found here: irenelyon.com/free-resources/ I hope this helps.
