THE STORY OF SUBWAY BY MAGNATESMEDIA: The 17 year old founder of Subway had never made a sub sandwich in his life, and his first restaurant failed miserably. So how did Subway overtake McDonald’s and become the biggest fast-food chain in the entire world? This is a story of both struggles and success, a tale of lawsuits and lies - this is the controversial history of Subway…
In 1965, 17-year-old Fred DeLuca wanted to become a doctor, but he had a problem. He was the son of poor Italian American immigrants and earned just $1.25 an hour at a hardware store, so he had no idea how he was going to pay for medical school. He’d grown up in public housing in the Bronx, and his family barely had enough money to scrape by. But then one day Fred and his parents got invited to a barbeque at the house of an old family friend, a nuclear physicist named Peter Buck. From the size of his house, it was clear that Peter was well off, and so Fred decided to ask him how he could make enough money for college, secretly hoping Peter might give him a loan. Instead, Peter’s answer was not what he expected. Peter said: “You should open a submarine sandwich shop.” They started out with one small location, originally called Pete's Super Submarines (before the rebrand to Subway), however their first store was not profitable. So how did Subway become so successful and become worth billions of dollars? Watch this video on Subway’s story to find out the controversial rise (and decline?) of Subway’s fast food empire!

Especially when now you can go to at least a few competitors, pay at most a small amount more if not the same price and get something that tastes better and is likely fresher. I’m hearing Jersey Mike’s is great, but I have yet to try it due to not having a close by location (one is set to open in the future though, so this will change). However, I DO know of two better choices: Firehouse Subs and Penn Station. Firehouse is literally everything Subway wishes it was, including fresher ingredients and full sandwiches. Penn Station is the next level… where you get to watch the meats get cooked on a grill, they put quite a bit on the sandwiches (and most of them give you choices of additional toppings as well) and they carry pretty good fries. Both are more expensive, but well worth it, only downside is fewer locations. Fortunately, I know of at least two good locations of each of them, thus I see no reason to even consider Subway.

The fact they offered Buy one Get one, and then revoked that and doubled the price of their food is despicable. That’s literally a bait scam. Their food is now more expensive than many other fast food restaurants. It’s not worth it, if you offer chips as a side you’re not worth $15 for a meal

Here's one issue this video missed that is, in my opinion, pretty big...the fact that most stores do not honor promotions and coupons. Using a "deal" in the mobile app is impossible because so few stores participate. This leads to customers becoming upset and deciding to order elsewhere. Further, my local Subways don't even honor most coupons I receive in the mail almost weekly. This is, of course, because the store owner can't afford to accept them due to other factors this video points out. However, it also makes things that much worse for those stores as it alienates customers and decreases sales even further.

  • @Trephining

Had this experience locally within the past six months. The employee at hte store flat out told me they weren't accepting the printed and mailed "buy one get one free" coupons "because we are broke". They would still accept the others that were for things like a meal, get a half a sub, chips and a drink, but none that were buy a sandwich get one free. And that same store also started closing at 8pm on week nights. I usually drive by that location right around 7:55-8:10 on a few weeknights, and discovered they were closed when an employee came to the door at 8:02 to tell me they shortened their hours. So now it doesn't make much sense to even try.

Subway has doubled prices after the pandemic. Just like McDonald’s. People making $7 hr can’t afford to buy a series sub for $12. They work 8 hours for $56. Before taxes. Spending 1/4 of a days wage on a sub is not going to happen on these areas. I’m in California I make $25 hr delivery driver and I don’t mind spending $12 on a sub. Also In California we have Food stamp program that allows low income people to use food stamps at Subway, McDonald’s, Del taco, Taco Bell, jack in the box, KFC, Popeyes and more. So mothers do take their children to subway to spend food stamps. If I was subway I would buy all the locations that are struggling and lease the restaurant at a break even . So they Barrow money at a low interest rate and buy the stores and lease the store to the franchise’s at the cost of the mortgage. As the buildings are paid off the mortgage gets cheaper so franchises owners are able to spend less and less on renting the building. Allowing for more profit. 2. I’d make competitive partnerships with farmers and Ensure the Ingredients are not sold to franchise’s at a higher price then subway pays the farmers so the ingredients the franchise’s gets the ingredients at the best price possible. Then I’d make the average price of the subs be the cost of 1 hours labor. I’d focus marketing dollars on getting people to download the app so subway can market directly to the customers and offer deals and savings. The average person is aware of the fast and fresh image of subway . The $5 foot long always was amazing value for customers but today it’s not possible. Id do $8 foot long menu where every sub is $8 on the classic menu then I’d keep the series subs but I’d make deals with celebrities with huge followers like the rock and Shaq and In the deal they would have to make periodic posts on Social media of them at a subway location choosing their sub off the menu and enjoying it . And saying “ eat fresh “ at the end with a smile . I’d also incentivize customers to post themselves ordering subs the way they like and sharing it on tik tok and other social media platforms. I’d try to make subway come Off as fair and generous to franchises making it attractive to open a franchise. I’d also have an alternative meat menu for vegans. I’d create new sauces that pays tribute to cultural dishes like Indian curry sauce , Korean bbq sauce & flavors from around the world. I’d make subway the craving everyone anywhere can enjoy.

2012-2014 I was in the market to take on a franchise as there was an opportunity to get a great spot at a newly built OC in our town center. McD was already present nearby so that was off the table, KFC not really a thing anywhere and Burger King only 3x in the country. And I wanted Subway because I knew it from Germany and many other countries. Once I was handed the contract it was one thing only - suicide. I gave it back with that comment and they laughed at me that if I won't take it they will find someone else no later than the next month who will. It is 2023 and no Subway anywhere. And I saw some places in Germany not named Subway anymore but selling similar menus under own names and brands. The worst part thou is when you look at any employee at Subway. You can tell how bad the company is for the one's who are doing the leg work while the one's who quit and do it under their brand are happy and friendly as you'd expect anyone doing well for himself.

I live in a small town and there was a subway in the same location that was always opening and closing, with different owners over the years. They never did well and the owners always blamed the locals for not supporting them. Subway is just not good for the price. We have better sandwiches made in our local grocery store next door. They couldn’t compete. Finally another business took over that location and we no longer have subway. Nobody misses it.

I used to go to Subway all the time on Thursday mostly. I still love Subway, but I started to stop when we moved & when the workers started to be more skimp with the amount of Chicken Teriyaki. I might go to one every now and then, but they are still so skimp with the food & sauce. Back then they were putting so much on you wouldn’t even have to Ask them to put more(you didn’t have to pay for more when asking back then). Now if I see a worker being skimp I Always Ask them to put more since There is legit little to nothing on it. Sad to see their ”downfall”, but they’re still a huge company.

It's simply overpriced these days for the consumer. I visited the other day (with a coupon) and you were looking at £7 just for the 'basic' subs without coupon. If you order off Just Eat etc then this goes up to almost over £11 for a footlong meal deal. The inside of stores have barely been modernised. Self Service ordering machines are pretty standard in most fast food chains here and would be a good addition. Although this is probably UK specific due to sugar tax, you can't even get standard Pepsi from the fountain machine...

Mind you re. self service machines, would those be easy to implement for Subway? • @JKGuitar

@@fetchstixRHD I can't see why not. You can order on Just Eat etc and that's basically the same as using a self serving machine. The lack of staff could be an issue but I'd imagine lack of space is the major one. Alot of stores are tiny here in the UK

Sixty years in the US and I never heard any of those stories because I was a food snob and wouldn’t consider eating at a Subway while I had copious better alternatives in the San Francisco Bay Area. Subway though is pretty popular here in Bangkok, Thailand and a bit of a godsend. Thai don’t do sandwiches very well. I started to give Subway a try. While I would prefer crusty bread, Subway’s offerings are acceptable and I can get a reasonable representative American sandwich in Thailand. The stores are not so numerous that they compete with each other. That honor goes to 7-11 franchises. You can have three to four 7-11’s within spitting distance of each other here.

The Petitioner took the settlement and it was agreed upon with the stipulation that the "tuna's" true identity not be disclosed. Upon a quick Google glance, I see the issue was put back on the table as recently as July 2022. I personally don't eat at Subway. Admittedly, this became even more definite when learning about the "tuna".
