Why storytelling is more trustworthy than presenting data | Karen Eber | TEDxPurdueU

Karen is a leadership consultant who is extremely passionate about storytelling. Her mission is to help people understand that their companies/groups will perform better and be more empathetic if their leaders learn to use storytelling as a manner of leading rather than simply supplying data or unclear, cold orders. Karen Eber develops leaders and shapes culture one story at a time. Karen brings 20 years of experience driving global talent development for individuals, teams, and organizations in the Fortune 500. She uses stories to point out key moments from everyday life to help leaders be aware of how to respond versus react. She builds new ideas and thinking with pragmatic approaches that influence and inspire action in leaders and organizations.
Karen is the CEO and Chief Storyteller of Eber Leadership Group. Karen brings deep expertise from global roles where she led Culture and Executive Development and was as a Chief Learning Officer in companies like General Electric, Deloitte and HP. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I love to hear other speakers explain the same message I share in their different unique way. Karen does this beautifully and even though I think I know this stuff, I still get to learn from how she explains it.

One of my teachers said that attention and love are the same thing to most people. This is especially true for children. When the little kid says "Mommy Mommy watch me swing!" Even though she has seen it twenty six times in the past twelve minutes, the child is asking "do you love me?" If you simply acknowledge someone through something as small as a smile, you can make their day. Never underestimate the power of a smile. I have seen it flip people's days around, mine included. I work with children a lot for my job, and this had made it far better. I understand what the kids are asking, and can make their whole experience better. When I smile at a child (especially younger ones), they are able to see me as friendly and fun. If you smile at the crying child in front of you in the checkout aisle, they will likely stop and hide behind mom, as they will feel shy. Find common ground between you and coworkers. Talk to them, even if it is kind of awkward at first. I ask my coworkers about their hobbies and interests, and they will talk about stuff endlessly. And it is wonderful. Sometimes they go on about something you have no interest in, others end with a college lecture. It is beautiful.

Thanks for your comment Brad. I agree. Many people are leaders are hesitant to use stories. Not knowing where to find them or how to tell them. But I have case studies that show when you lean into them, you are more engagement and better performance!

Its more powerful not trustworthy. There are misleading stories told all the time. Who has not witnessed someone telling their story and even though its filled with elements of truth it is ultimately misleading. Storytelling is only trustworthy if it points to something that is true. It can be powerful whether its true or not.

I don’t like this. We may all have our own interpretations of the data, but that doesn’t make your’s correct or better than other interpretations. Interpretations are going to have some underlying truth/value claims that we all ought to come to definitive conclusions on through deduction, syllogisms, and fundamental axioms relating to our shared normative ethics. Ie: if we value life, than this is true, making that true, therefore validating this opinion.
