    Anti theft is true. I left my old diesel 6speed truck running at the gas station once and a guy jumped in saw the stick and got back out, leaving the door open. I watched the whole thing while standing in line checking out.

    From the first car I bought and paid for myself to present day, I have only owned and driven manual high performance cars. Until a time comes that I am no longer physically or mentally able, I will continue on the path that has become second nature to me. Right now I am 65 years old and I own and drive a 2003 SVT Terminator Cobra Mustang...my 6th mustang...all sticks. And no, it is not a garage queen, trophy seeking contest car. Nor is it a track hardened race car. My cobra is just my dream... a high performance street machine. I drive my prize 2 or 3 times a week in the summer and I use all 621 wheel hp of my modified mineral grey monster to get every single smile per gallon out of it that I can!

    Oddly enough the main reason the Cobra I have now went up for sale was due to a physical disability of the previous owner where driving a manual was not as much of an option anymore.

    I definitely agree that it's more fun. I do some light wheeling on the trails here in Montana and it's really no issue using the 6 speed in my Rubicon. 1st gear in 4L is especially impressive; you don't have to use the throttle at all when crawling, just brake and a little clutch even on 33's. I guess if I was doing more gnarly stuff in Moab or somewhere where higher gear and more throttle is needed to force your way up something I'd want an auto, but for crawling it's perfect in 1st gear/4L.

    I’ve been tempted to manual swap my XJ but I always decide not to but I think that’s for the best - a Wrangler with a stick is definitely something I’d be interested in, that or some sort of compact car. If I got a truck one day I’d want it to be a manual.

    It is difficult to work 3 pedals with two feet off-road especially on inclines, declines, and any off-camber situations. So, put a throttle lever on the stick shift knob so you only need to work 2 pedals with two feet.

    With a Stick you can start the engine by rolling the car in neutral then popping the clutch in first gear... You can't do that with an automatic transmission. Also, Jeeps were originally made with the stick and it just adds to the nostalgia of the car and its way more fun to drive than a automatic. Stick drivers in my opinion, are better drivers because they are more engaged with the drive... as soon as you drive a car with a stick, you know its about the feel, the sound and the road your mind is connected to the car completely. This makes you more sharper as a driver and your skills improve over time. There is nothing I can say for a automatic jeep other than its not much fun and its more common for people who are use to the engine calling the shots. 😆

    The manual gearbox in the TJ doesn't feel good, it's very vague... If your a driver enthusiast you know what I'm talking about.... It's not a Honda or Porsche manual gearbox..... I never found the charm in manuals in off-road Vehicles or trucks like other folks.... Obviously a must in sportscars ... when your off-roading last thing you wanna do is deal with a manual especially when stuck. Don't most rock crawlers use Auto? The 3 speed 32rh that came in these is a really good transmission. Pretty reliable, simple and it's 3 gears helps with the torque... The 4 speed with overdrive was actually trash that would come with the later Rubicon.......

    Manual is the way cars were made, mechanical and connecting the driver to be one with the car and I don’t think I can ever go back to an automatic, I’ve got a Jk rubicon 6 speed and I have a NA Miata 5 speed and I never had a time where I regret buying and driving either one. One of the reasons why I didn’t want to buy a newer car is because less and less manuals are being put into these newer cars because less and less people actually know how to drive them!

But even controlling the RPMs to stay low once I settle on my speed, I’m burning less gas and putting less pressure on the motor. It SHREDS through snow with the 4 wheel drive, I’d say it’s practical regardless of what any detractors say 🤣👍🏻

    I hear you man, I drive an automatic and I gotta say it definitely gets boring sometimes. I do know how to drive stick but never owned one but thats gonna change this summer. I going to get a manual. As far as feeling connected to the vehicle I 100% agree on that. That's something in which I feel you don't get with a lot of vehicles nowadays with all those thousands of features they got. With that I feel less in control (some I'm terrified of). Lane assist, adaptive cruise control, some vehicles like tesla you can just let the car drive itself and I'm thinking where is the fun in that? I would rather have something like this where you actually drive instead of being lazy. As my awesome mother will say, and I quote, "automatics are for city folk".

    I have a 2.5 Auto. It’s slow but what’s the most annoying is no overdrive gear. Just 3 speeds running constantly at 3K RPMs. I’ve had a lot of sticks but off-road I really don’t mind the auto. It decreases things to focus on and helps me just focus on terrain and driving off-road.

I want to know if I am on the highway and going 50 and then the traffic is coming to a stop and I shift into neutral thinking I have to stop. Let’s say the traffic starts moving and I need to go but now I am in neutral, let’s say I am going 20 mph, should I shift into 2nd? What if I stall on the highway?? I am in Chicago and people have zero patience. Appreciate your help! Thank you!!

There is such a Thing as a bad gearbox in terms of engagement and tactical feel; a good example of a good manual is any 911 or an s2000..... A terrible gearbox is very annoying and ruins the driving experience. Ask Mazda speed3 owners. And in the case of the TJ Wrangler or any offroader the manual usually doesn't ad anything to it's experience. In fact it becomes a nuisance especially when off-roading..... Stick shift allows you to be more engaged with the car. You know what RPM you want and that feeling when you downshift, rev match to pass someone. That’s something no automatic transmission can ever give you. I don’t care how great the DUAL CLUTCH or PDK is, it’s just boring to drive any sports car that is automatic. I’ve always said this to people for years. A fast car that isn’t manual isn’t fun and you might as well just go ride a bullet train.

    My daily is a 13 Civic 5MT, and my weekend Jeep is a 2000 TJ with a 5 speed, either of these vehicles would lose their personality completely if they didn't have a manual transmission, I would not be able to daily a civic at all if it wasn't manual, I think it was a big mistake for Honda to scrap the manual in the base trims this generation.

  • @MiguelGarcia-vj7oo

    @MiguelGarcia-vj7oo

    I disagree on the jeep losing personality if it was auto. See with wranglers or anything that's not a driver's car.... It's not a big deal..... On a vintage BMW 2002, it's an absolute tragedy. The manual is one the most important aspects of the vintage drivers car experience. The biggest factors what gives the TJ it's "character" is it's utility, design, daily usability, and annoyance for driving a tractor with a license plate....... The manual on these are not great... It's not a air-cooled 911 or lotus elan manual.... And for some folks dailying a TJ is already hard, the gearbox might make it a worse or better experience. Again from a certain perspective. Now Honda makes a really good Manual gearbox. They feel great. So having it in a basic bitch civic will totally add to the experience if that's something someone values.......
